Was this serious? I saw that game got bad reviews

Fallen Earth was a fantastic MMO given bad reviews by those who were spoonfed easy levelling and couldnt understand that it was a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

A gritty and difficult MMO obviously too hard for the masses.

I actually quit Fallen Earth because it wasn't difficult enough :p

Same here :p

If you knew what to do, you could earn tons of chips and experience by pew-pewing level 40-43's at level 25ish.

But in the grand scheme of things, Fallen Earth is a much harder MMO than most.

When I finally had a chance to log on last night I noticed they had updated the patch notes on the login screen. Couldn't figure a way to c&p them though and didn't see them listed any where else.

Yes it's serious. It's a great MMO. I agree with Elcs and co. about it being a bit on the easy side, but since I'm essentially playing it casually - it works out for the better that way. Absolutely great story, good mechanics, and a phenomenal atmosphere. Something bad can be said about every game out there, FE is no different. However as a whole, coming from an indy studio with no franchise IP or anything behind it, FE is one hell of a game.

Fallen Earth was a fantastic MMO given bad reviews by those who were spoonfed easy levelling and couldnt understand that it was a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

A gritty and difficult MMO obviously too hard for the masses.

Again, I agree somewhat - it's easy to level up and do what you want. But then again, that's a plus - you can do whatever the hell you want.

Same here :p

If you knew what to do, you could earn tons of chips and experience by pew-pewing level 40-43's at level 25ish.

But in the grand scheme of things, Fallen Earth is a much harder MMO than most.

The learning curve is especially daunting with the skills. I still don't know what half of mine do, but that makes it that much more fun. FE isn't for everybody, that's for sure. But it makes for a great and very detailed RPG.

Really want to like Star Trek Online and have it be successful. Have not found a hook yet though. I am going to keep digging until I get a new/better ship and maybe it will be fun then.

(stupid post yes, but we are kind of back on topic now)

I'll tell you this - if you're a hardcore Trek fan/nerd, you're going to love the missions starting around LtC 2. There's several missions that have roots back in ToS - one of them sort of ties both the past and the present together.

Sort-of Spoiler below:
You end up being sent back in time by the Guardian of Forever through the mirror portal, immediately coming upon the USS Enterprise - which features some minor voice-over by Spock (Nimoy). The mission pulls in elements all the way from the future timeline involving Miral Paris as the Kuvah'Mahg - and the absolutely interesting and nicest touch to the mission is that it actually explains why ToS Klingons look more human-like than TNG and beyond Klingons, and it also ties in several other episode and movie elements as well.

^--- I left a good bit out, but still if you like surprises don't read the spoiler. Let me just say that this is by far the most well done mission in terms of actual story line that I've come across to date.

Found a chart some guy did testing weapon damage versus range. After a brief read it looked like he did a decent run through, and the very short synopsis is that energy weapons carry full damage out to about 2k, then drop of till 10k. Cannon/turret falls faster being only 40% effective at max while array damage is still at 65% at max.

Data feels right based on my experiences and another reason why you don't want to full impulse into an encounter.

One thing I haven't noticed being discussed is any death penalty within the game.

Is there a penalty for dying and if so what is it? What happens to you, your crew and your ship?

You respawn 10 seconds later at the last respawn checkpoint. Your death penalty is a 10 second respawn timer.

What the hell is it with people and death penalties in games? Are you all really that masochistic or something?

Erm ... no. Keep your Wizard hat on fair traveller.

I am a big PvE fan and very rarely PvP in an MMO as there is typically some fudge skillset or build which can seriously wtfpwn you in 1 second and involves little skill.

Some death penalties are insanely harsh and game hurting whilst others are too carebear'ish. This typically depends on the game itself and it's community.

As mentioned, I am tempted to pick it up for just the single month as it doesnt appear to have much to keep players entertained for longer than that. I would be afraid of burning out the content or levelling within 2 weeks tops at a guesstimate.

Sorry, it was really a general rant, not directed specifically at you. On the STO forums daily there's usually a dozen or so new threads about "Where's the death penalty?" It irritates me that people want to take a step backwards in progress when it comes to games - especially casual games. The only reason most people ask for a death penalty is for the PvP aspects because they themselves want to grief others and get off on someone's misery. To each their own I suppose, but I wonder how their tune would be if the tables were reversed for a while.

I like a death penalty in a game because it forces me to stay safe, keep alive and gives you that rush when you either just finish someone off in time or escape a bad situation by the skin of your teeth.

Certain death penalties like losing items or losing your entire ship/cargo/crew are generally overly harsh and kill the game for a PvE'er.

I have to admit from the general feel I get from the game, a death penalty would fit in nicely.

Please find the release notes for February 5, 2010 below:

General
The Admiral promotion mission will now complete if players choose a fleet escort as their reward. This is not retro-active. If you’re an Admiral with a dangling promotion mission because you chose an escort, please submit a ticket to CS.
Cardassian "Empire Defense" mission maps are now open to Klingon players.
K7 station has been decloaked and returned to the sector map. Alleged perpetrators are being interrogated.
The "Abandon Ship" power is now only available while in combat.
General server optimization to increase performance.

I kinda like that there is no penalty for death for a number of reasons. For one I would have raged quit right probably the first day because if there was some kind of penalty I would either have to keep rerolling characters or I would never have a ship. I think its fairly easy to die in this game and when you roll klingon all you do is fight stuff all the time and die. I feel as if you are klingon and you arent dying, you arent doing something right....

No you're not. The servers just crashed.

Oh, you mean Fallen Earth. Nevermind. :)

Yeah, I guess I totally chose the wrong night to try this game. Oh well.

Also, is it bad to have named my ship the U.S.S. Gotterdammerung?

In general I like death penalities too as they make dungeon crawls and the like a little more intense. I'm not sure I would want one in STO though

K7 is pretty funny now. They've got a group of security types interrogating a klingon asking how he made the starbase get cloaked.

Not sure if there is one, but i'm looking for a trial version. Can't find it on the website.
