I just finished playing this for a few hours and I agree with this as well. Much like Champions Online, STO feels like it's really missing quite a bit. Also, this game just seems nothing more than a single player game with a online chat element tacked on. I asked a few times in chat if STO was a good game for grouping and no one responded at all. I'm sure there are some grouping elements but MMOs lately have no doubt put the emphasis on soloing. I'm not asking to go back to the EQ1 days but I guess it's too much to ask for a happy balance.

Bleh.

How stupid. Grouping together and using tactics is a unique feeling in this game. While you don't NEED to group for low level garbage, you certainly CAN do so and it's a lot of fun when you have folks actually working together properly.

Don't blame the game for lacking something it doesn't lack when the current beta (remember, it's still in BETA) is full of people who don't care and just want to get to play a game that's not out yet.

Sorry but the "it's beta!!!!" excuse is a really tired one especially considering the game will be out in what... like 3 weeks? The days of the miracle patch on the last day before launch are all but over. Well, I guess Cryptic did a miracle when they patched Champions before it launched. That was hilarious.

Also, I liked how you flamed my post when all I said was MMO devs are putting the emphasis on soloing in general. I asked in game if STO was a good game for people that like to group but I guess your response is the best I'll get. Thanks... I think.

how are you guys even downloading the client? I've tried 4 different mirrors and the connection keep dying in the middle. I'm trying the cryptic downloader, but it's going from 10-100 kb/s...

btw, I'm stealing your starcon2 avatar idea powernick.

I was having the same problem but bigdownload.com has the full client and I was able to get it in an hour or two. The cryptic downloader is worthless IMO.

Oh, a d/l link to try later. Hopefully it still works once ik. Home as the other sources I've tried so far have something in the range of nil success.

Just get the torrent, everything else is a waste of time. Took me about 3 hours total to download it.

Starting to sound a lot like the Champion's launch. It might be a bit premature to ask if there is any actual content in this one, but after getting burned on Champions I don't feel right giving these clowns my money.

Anyone know if this is shipping with endgame content or content that requires grouping that has actual rewards?

I imagine this is to snag the hardcore, enthusiastic Trek fans (or at least their wallets) who will grab it regardless.

Making you pay that on top of the Box purchase does seem a bit....conniving.

The initial gameplay seems to be somewhat unclear, with maps that have no information on them, and people wandering about futilely trying to find the simplest things. Not particularly clear on how things work in many ways.

We'll see if the rabid fanbase will make a difference here, I guess.

Not really, their mission generator system is pretty lackluster.

And not likely, as well as not likely to your other two questions.

Played for a few hours. I actually had some fun. I have a question or two. So far I've been able to do everything alone, sometimes it was tough but it was doable. When do you get forced to do group content or get help? Also, do you get ships every 10 levels? Are they given to you or do you have to have some sort of currency? I saw some things you could buy for marks of exploration (I think that's what they were called) but I didnt see how you got those?

You never get "forced" to group or get help. However there are certain mechanics in the game that will throw you in instances with other players alongside you. Not that you have to stay/follow/assist them - I personally find it more of an annoyance.

Fleet Actions and Deep Space Encounters normally will be instanced with a bunch of other people in there. Occasionally regular missions will group you up automatically with others.

that d/l link worked fine, took about 5 minutes to unpack it and another 15 or so to install.

other than that all I've been able to do is change my screen size as I get the wonderful server full message.

Space combat is fun, though I'm already getting a little bored with it. The ground game is a mix of ok and terrible. I don't particularly enjoy any aspect of it, just a bunch "pew pew" over and over again. There isn't much variation, you will have a standard attack and then a special of some sort along with melee. Lag also seems to be a bigger problem on the ground for some reason.

I'm sure you get more options as you go along, I'm only up to level 7 so far. Lack of content could definitely be a concern since you can only gain points through completing missions, there is no normal XP. I put some pretty serious hours in and I'm still pretty far away from the next ship upgrade which occurs at level 10.

The forced group instances are a little annoying sometimes but I haven't had any major problems.

You just have to keep trying, I usually get in after 5 tries or so.

I actually found the game very entertaining. There are lots of bugs still but if you like space combat and love trek you may get some enjoyment out of the game. It does seem VERY easy 5 hours in.

Ive been playing on my macbook pro since the game refuses to run on my i7 right now. It plays fine on my rig with the gtx280 as well.

If they clean up the ai and bugs I can see this game doing well. Hopefully the ground combat gets a little more tactical. I agree with the pew pew comment above on ground combat.

If starship custimization gets hardcore at the later levels I will enroll after beta. I need a quick to jump in and get out game since I cant devote hours on end like I used to in FF11.

The game will not be out in 3 weeks. I REALLY HOPE it won't be out in 3 weeks. It's not ready for release. The Klingon side is a joke.

Grouping in STO isn't necessary so not a lot of people do, but there's nothing stopping you from grabbing a group and cleaning/holding SB24 or something. The question doesn't really make sense. It's like asking if STO is a good game for people who like to play video games. The question, along with the miriad of answers, is subjective. There are games that require groups (LOTRO) to get anything done past a certain level, but STO isn't one of them. At least, not yet.
