I've only seen a few episodes of TOS and TNG, but haven't watched any of the other variants. I've been wanting to buy a complete series that is long and good and a friend told me DS9 would be a good pick. Right now I guess I'm in a toss up between DS9 and Stargate which I've only seen a couple of episodes of and thought it was alright.

The episode where DS9 was fully armed and firing weapons in all directions was cool.

I liked DS9 when it was on. Dunno how it holds up now though, its been quite awhile.

I've enjoyed all of the ST series, DS9 is probably my least favourite, but I will still watch the reruns when it is on.

I liked it, but there are more "emotional" episodes than the other series IIRC. Granted, it has kick-ass combat scenes by comparison.

My personal opinion:

TNG = DS9 > Voyager > Enterprise > TOS

I'm watching all of the episodes in order right now.. up to season 6 so far.

If you've always like star trek like me, you might be able to make it through the first 2 horrible seasons, once
season 3 starts it gets good.. and a few episodes in season 5/6 are ridiculous. But those first 2 seasons... tough
to watch even for me.

I would really try to get into and watch TNG however.. great cast, great storylines.. probably my favorite show
of all time. Its really a step above the other series in terms of writing.

DS9 was my fav - of course, it was what TNG was to the generation for me. I grew up watching it, while TNG was on when I was too young to really "get it."

So far is the general consensus that DS9 is better or similar to TNG? I've liked what I've seen so far on TNG, but there are definite improvements to be made. Not every episode needs to revolve around Riker falling for someone or Data trying to figure out emotions.

Was that when the klingons declared war and went on a rampage? That was a great ep.

They liked it so much they did it twice... or three times... or more?

DS9 > Voyager > Enterprise > TNG >Original Series

I really can't watch TNG ( at least the early seasons ) anymore without cringing.

TNG is much better than DS9. DS9 is basically the bottom rung on the Star Trek ladder.

DS9 was hard to watch. The only ST franchise I've liked is TNG and I absolutely loved it. DS9 was a lot like Babylon 5 with lots of people just sitting around talking.

DS9 and TNG are both great but for different reasons.

TNG really stuck to the exploration aspect and had much more standalone episodes that you can just turn on, watch, and say "hey, that was cool."

On DS9, you watch the characters develop over the course of one long story arc (the dominion war). I hate comparing it to a soap opera as it might give a negative connotation but that's basically what it was.

If you don't have time to invest into an entire series run, go with TNG episodes.

If you have a good amount of time and can watch DS9 from premiere to finale, i think you will enjoy it. (During the original broadcast run, i couldn't get into it because i couldn't watch the episodes consistently from week to week. Once i got a hold of the entire series on discs, i watched all of them over the course of a summer and ended up really liking it.)

I'm planning on having lots of time to follow a show from beginning to end. Right now I'm working my way through 24, I'm up to season 4. I figure once I go off to school I won't be able to afford cable anymore so I might as well have a ton of tv series to watch. That's why Stargate would be tempting, there's enough there to watch a new episode each weekday and still it would take up a good part of a year.

as stated, TNG has some great episodes but minimal story arc.

DS9 has pretty good writing and a continuous arc... but the arc deals with a lot of Bajoran religion so it's a slightly different kind of scifi compared to TNG.

As was said earlier, the first couple seasons of DS9 arn't great because not all that much happens action-wise ... season 3 really picks up & towards the end it gets very good with the climactic episodes of the Dominion-war being some of the best Star Trek you'll see.
