My only real problem with the new Trek movies is that I didn't like Captain Kirk in them. . . he came across as an asshole. It kind of undermined the whole premise.

Captain Kirk was one of those leaders people would do anything for and would hate to disappoint. I never got that impression from the new movies.
 
It almost feels like the powers that be in this one are intentionally removing the entire "space" part from StarTrek.

Practically the only reason I watched TNG was for the space battles.

Uhh, its what we do whenever a sequel comes out compare how it looks to previous ones. Yes we are comparing based on the trailers, pretty common thing to do. Honestly I think you need to chill out breh.

I'm not a big fan of the reboot either. I'm fine with it, but not a big fan. I thought the first JJ one was not bad, and I thought the second JJ one was not bad. Actually, I've pretty much forgotten what the second one was about. I remember the plot of the first one, but thought the plot was kinda stupid in many areas. It was mostly stuff other than the main plot that saved the movie IMO.

Well, that's actually from the first movie when Kirk was a kid....it works in the trailer, but it went on way too long. should have just been a short clip.

This. Karl Urban is sublime as Bones.

The rest of this franchise can go straight to hell. Abrams, Paramount and co have turned ST into a generic action property.
 
Interesting interview with Lin. New one ignores Into Darkness story.

Like most people, director Justin Lin is well aware of the problems the last Star Trek movie, Into Darkness, faced and has come up with a way to combat those issues with his new film, Star Trek Beyond.
Talking to Birth. Movies. Death., Lin confirmed that he'll be "politely ignoring" all of the events that happened in the last movie, helmed by J.J. Abrams, and will restart the franchise with a whole new feel.
Lin said that while he wouldn't discount what happened, he wasn't going to embrace anything that Abrams did in the last film, but did take a second to acknowledge just how grateful he was to the director for creating the series.
"I embraced what J.J. has brought — without him this whole group wouldn't be together — so I'm definitely very appreciative of him," Lin said.
Lin added some more details about the upcoming film, including the fact that Beyond will take place two and a half years after Into Darkness, meaning that the USS Enterprise crew will be halfway done their five year mission.

So basically the new reboot series is so incomprehensible that the second one is already necessitating a major retcon in the third?

If I had to guess it is going to ignore these couple of things:
Pike dying maybe? Doubtful though. Most likely it will ignore (or conveniently not talk about Kirk dying and getting Kahn blood so that he doesn't have super strength or immortality.

Wow just two movies in and they're rebooting the reboot already. 😵

Sortof. It's an officially acknowledged discontinuity in the canon. The author (or in this case the director) is the god of the story and if they say that this one thing never happened then, within that particular story, it never did.
