I didn't have the volume up because reasons, but visually that looked like Generic Sci-Fi Space Film #64226865324. Star Trek? That could have been Star Wars or John Carter.

God it looks terrible. Couldn't they have found someone better than Justin Lin? This looks like it won't measure up with Into Darkness at all, which I thought was great.

This trailer doesn't make the film seem all that great.

I'm not much of a fan for the Tiny Toon version of Star Trek anyway.

Probably the first time a trailer for a trek film left a bad taste in my mouth. I thought all the people whining that "Roddenberry's Trek is dead" with the first of this trilogy were just a bunch of cryer's. But this? Hm. They may yet have ammunition. I just hope it's a bad trailer with poor editing that misrepresents the tone of the final product.

Roddenberry's Trek is dead, I'm pretty confident there's no question about it.

The real question is, does it matter if you're still entertained? These new movies have been fun (for me), just not smart. I'm fine with that, the other Trek series are still there and more easily consumed than ever with all the streaming services out there.

You're comparing this movie to Into Darkness? When all we have of this movie is a couple minute trailer, and Into Darkness has been out for how long? Good lord people, just stop. Give the damn thing a chance.

I'm not a big fan of the reboot either. I'm fine with it, but not a big fan. I thought the first JJ one was not bad, and I thought the second JJ one was not bad. Actually, I've pretty much forgotten what the second one was about. I remember the plot of the first one, but thought the plot was kinda stupid in many areas. It was mostly stuff other than the main plot that saved the movie IMO.

JJ isn't making this movie.
He's a producer actually.

so they're going through yet another enterprise....

Yeah... that's gonna put a dent in that 5 year mission...

Well, they did include that scene in the first movie quickly going over the "many world(universes)" interpretation of quantum mechanics that would happen if you supposedly time travelled in the movie for a reason I suppose.

Yes? I mean, thanks to Star Wars and comic book movies there is already a ton of action sci-fi. It would be nice to get some space operas that actually get you to think.

The problem is that Sci-Fi is often big budget, which means it needs to appeal to a larger audience to make money, which means more blasting and less thinking. I don't blame the Trek movies for not being real Trek, they are a product of the time. The only space left for true Sci-Fi is TV.

Didn't all of the Next Generation era movies have the same problem though? This is what I don't understand... Trek fans are bitching about the new movies being terrible Trek movies when Trek movies have been bad for a while now.

Yeah, some of the TNG movies kinda sucked. They were more like long TV shows, and not really good ones.

No. Generations was more about Picard's psyche (and getting him on the same screen with Shatner) than action. First Contact played around with Time Travel and the concept that how important single moments in history are. Insurrection is the least action Sci-Fi of the bunch, with real Trek-like questions about the place of Starfleet and their mandate.

The last one was pure action crap I grant you, and it killed the series.

It wasn't because it was action. It just wasn't good. I didn't find Insurrection good either. In fact..the only one I really liked was First Contact now that I think about it. LOVED that movie. I will admit the parts I liked the most of TNG movies was when they figured out how to work TOS characters into them....even though I'm not a huge TOS fan.

I also really liked The Voyage Home more than anything after it...so there's that too.

I didn't really like Insurrection that much when it first came out, but I actually have grown to like it more over the years. I don't think any of the TNG movies are terrible really, or at least I can sit and watch any of them.

I really liked the first reboot movie. It was more action oriented for sure, but it still felt OK to me. The last one I thought was good until I watched a second time. It wasn't.

I've been pretty good with the new Treks. I had some minor gripes about Into Darkness, but it was good entertainment I think. I'm sort of fine if this one is essentially more of the same.

Star Trek jumped the shark when they started including car chases.
