TBH, when I hear the Star Spangled Banner I get goosebumps, but probably for the opposite reason of most everyone else. It makes me think just how easy it is to insire people to do what you want. A few poetic lines are enough to breed loyalty in the hearts of so many. A few familiar chords are enough to invoke our emotions and make us receptive to the bidding of our leaders. It reminds me of just how easy it is to throw out reason and "think" with their hearts. To let meaningless ideals like "nationalism" inspire men to kill others.
The "Pledge of Allegence" is even worse in my mind, as if I am supposed to pledge my loyalty to a country no matter who leads it or what direction it is heading in. I remeber every day before the start of school in elementry school we had to recite the Pledge. I stopped doing it after fifth grade. Whenever I am in a situation where I am supposed to recite the Pledge, or where the National Anthem is being sung and I am supposed to stand up and put my hand over my heart I refuse. And no, I'm not some card carrying commie, I simply find it terribly disturbing that a simple song could invoke such dangerous emotional responses.
