Star Citizen: Chris Robert`s new space sim (the Wing Commander guy)

This guy has 270 people working for him to "develop" this game. That's more people who work for the whole of Valve. For ONE GAME.

This game is the next Duke Nukem Forever.

Their original goal, to make a functioning game with more features than what has been released so far, was $2 million. Now they have 27 times that much funding and nothing to show for it besides a tech demo and delays. It's amazing that whales keep buying into the hype.

Especially when you think how many of those at Valve are just cooks/servers for Gabe. I don;t think it will be as delayed or as bad as DNF though.

To be fair Blizzard has like 4000-5000 employees and promised D3 PvP and delivered... brawling that was half baked and half broken.

They are suffering feature creep albeit at the request of the backers. At some point they have to put their foot down and say "that will come in an expansion pack later on". With their funding they could afford to hire a few more people to speed things up.

ps: congrats on 1,000 posts.

Not even close.

George Broussard never wanted to put out a game. He just wanted to keep remaking it into the best thing ever and didnt care about actually releasing a product or making income.

Chris Roberts isnt like that at all on top of which he has Broussard to look to as an example of how NOT to run a company.

The original goal was $2 million crowd funded dollars to secure additional funding outside of the crowd funding channel. How much additional funding, I have no ideal. Once they flew past $2 million they decided to go 100% crowd funded an then started pumping out stretch goals.

Let's clear something up. Getting twice as much funds does not automatically cut development time in half, if that were the case games like Destiny would be finished in a matter of weeks, not years.

Again, more people need to read "The Mythical Man Month" and learn how software development works....

Agreed. Frankly I think they're working at a pretty darn good pace and have put out a fair amount already with what they've released so far with arena commander. This isn't a lightweight arcade space game which is one thing people can't seem to remember. If it was they'd have been done a long time ago. As it stands they're having to work with some really complex control schemes, flight models, and a lot of other factors that come in to a space combat simulator that you won't see in your yearly churned out CoD/BF/etc. title.

I love this.... before the complaints were he didn't have enough people working on the game, now the complaint of the week is that there are a lot of people working on the game.

Hey, guess what, there is a LOT of artwork needed for a game like this. Especially one which is building maps/levels that are 100's of miles in size, and laying out ships alone that are 2+ miles in size, all with internal rooms and systems. That's a ton of 3D modeling and artwork, requiring dozens of artists. Now add in multiple art styles, such as the different human corporations that each have their own esthetic, and multiple races, each with their own unique look, now add a dozen staff writers for backstory/history/lore/language/arts/etc., needed to create a believable universe which has the feel of being old and not just manufactured yesterday.... Add the office workers, IT support staff, maintenance staff, and you easily hit a couple hundred people.

You know how many people worked on Grand Theft Auto 5? According to Rockstar, probably more than 1000... The amount of staff isn't something that you as an outside commentator can have any idea about in terms of it helping or hurting a project. Given that I highly doubt you have access to the current arena commander system (based on the comments made so far about the game and/or lack of progress), I think you should stop bad mouthing a game that you don't even have access to, and thus, have no idea of what its current state is.

...Glad you're back. Still the same tired comments that have been rebutted over, and over, and over...

See above. "27x funding" != that much faster. Also, it helps to look at the original KS goals vs current game goals.

I'm just going to use this as the stock response rather than going back 2 pages or so and finding our argument from the last time TC TC'd.

For those of you not in the know, Star Citizen is still in beta, due to be released in 2015. It is funded by users buying accounts and in game items, but those who funded the game earlier get bonus items as part of the stretch goals for the game.

BUT, if you got a Star Citizen game package or upgrade as a gift, or if you have given someone a game package as a gift, gift accounts do not get the stretch goal bonuses that other accounts get automatically.

This means every child who got the game from their parents, every friend who got it from another friend, every spouse who got it from their significant other, they are not getting the same game privileges and bonuses that everyone else is getting in the game, even though the same amount of money was paid for their game package.

I think most of us out there did not know this until just now. There was no way to know about it unless you have read every part of the FAQ on the main site. The FAQ is the only place where this rule is mentioned, and unless you had the issue to start with, there is no reason you would look in the FAQs until it was already to late to qualify for backer rewards.

There is no reason to buy any gift packages if the people we give them to are not entitled to the same bonuses that everyone else is getting. Cloud Imperium gets the money either way, so there's also no reason for them to deny the backer bonuses to people who were gifted their package. Gifted accounts should get the same bonuses after the date of activation that any other account activated that date would.

If you got your game package from a gift, then you are a second class star citizen. If you gave someone the game as a gift, all you have done is hurt their chances to get the backer rewards.
I encourage you to contact Cloud Imperium Games, and tell them that gift package backers are still backers!

Backer bonus
Everyone should get it

backer bonus

Something's definitely going on, that's for sure. It's like the people who took the bigger risk are getting a bigger reward.

I'm not sure that's ever happened in the history of risky things, ever.

1.) There's a giant thread for Star Citizen.
2.) It's aimed, to my knowledge, primarily to prevent the black market from gaining traction.
3.) NONE of the perks so far have really been particularly awe-inspiring.
4.) Seems silly really, if I wanted to have my brother set up an account, I'd just create a backer account for him and set him up with a package. Problem solved. Not seeing the issue.

Sarcasm? Please say yes. I'm tired, so very tired 🙁

Many people have known about this since gifting items began. You are not considered a backer until you spend actual money on the account you are using. Back when I was helping other members get LTI ships and packages I always told them to buy something from the pledge store, even a $5 skin, to qualify the account for future backer rewards. You also only get backer bonuses that occur after you spend that money, no previous bonuses are awarded. The earlier the backer, the more bonuses they have.

Oooh, good tip, didn't know that.

It is nowhere near beta . Its in early Alpha status. Its not being released in 2015 either. Its years away from being something that resembles a legitimate retail release of what was promised.

ummm... did you read the kickstarter? They always said it would be 3-5 years developing. That is how long it takes for any AAA title game, sometimes longer. Blizzard took 10 years for Diablo 3.

Learn something for once about game development. You are for the first time seeing a AAA game go from pretty much inception to completion knowing about it from essentially the start of development work. For normal games out there, you typically won't even hear about an announcement of it until after years into this process. Blizzard officially announced Diablo 3 in 2008, and even it didn't come out until 2012, (four years), and they had already been working on it for 6 years at that point! We are not even 2 years into this....

GTA 5 I believe took 5 years to develop, Skyrim took 4 years, Battlefield 3 took 4 years....
