The devs have repeatably said they don't want a pay-to-win system, and given that they don't have a publisher breathing down their necks I'm inclined to believe them. I imagine the ships will cost a lot more than $10 in real money, if they can even be bought with real money in the first place.

Thing is having lots of money and/or ships is not "winning". There is no winning this game, just having fun playing it.

That's the intention, but take a look at a single metagame like piracy. Now theoretically piracy can be done with any number of ships, but say Idrises are for sale for $20. Then, given the sheer number of people playing the game, you'll likely have to shell out $20 extra to be an effective pirate, and to avoid being preyed upon by other pirates.

Personally I hope that ships can't be bought with real money in-game once the funding closes. That way at least I know the player with 3 Idrises and 6 Hornets actually earned it.

Well they won't sell for $20, they will sell for much higher. I don't mind people spending a large amount of real life money to buy things in game. For some people it's the only way they'll ever be able to experience the bigger, fancier ships in the game because they don't have hours upon hours to spend grinding. Do they "win" because they bought a ship with real money? Not at all, first because this game is player skill dependent, not XP based. And second, as I said before you don't win just because you have more money or a more expensive ship.

In EVE it is possible to turn real money into in game money by purchasing PLEX and selling it in game. Does the EVE player who utilizes this "tactic" win the game? Not at all. We need to get out of the mindset that you win in these games. Winning is for single player games and multiplayer deathmatches/arena based play, not for open world sandbox games like SC.

If youre in a fight with someone and they blow you up, Id consider that you losing and them winning. And if you can buy your way into more powerful gear than the guy that doesnt pay, Id say thats pay to win.

Well, I resisted the temptation to get a Super Hornet. Almost did. But I think I'm going to just stick with what I have and earn the rest (Aurora LN, Freelancer, Retaliator)

No that is not pay to win. If he bought something that you would not be able to get for yourself without real money then it would be, but the game isn't like that.

Also I'm talking about winning the game, not just one fight. In a sandbox open world, there is no "game" to ultimately win. Having fun is how you "win" in sandbox games.

Arsinek has a bit of a point, although I do not believe it is as big of an issue as they are making it out to be.

Losing a dogfight is losing at a major part of the game, PVP. While someone who paid for an Idris has the upper hand in PVP versus someone who didn't spend any real cash for a ship flying an aurora or mustang, this is only significant at the launch of the game.

At launch new players will be at a disadvantage over backers who spent a ton of cash. This advantage will fade away with time as others will "earn" these same ships or better ones in game. A person who spends cash will not ALWAYS have the advantage since these ships are obtainable in game with time.

But who would attempt to engage in PVP with a corvette flying their dinky explorer ship anyway?

Have they released any info on what servers are going to be? Is it different servers, is it a shard like eve in the sense sandboxed?

some sort of instances, each with a max number of players. with ways to ensure you and your friends are in the same instance if requested.

Also we will be able to setup our own private servers, where you can modify the rules and whatnot.

Doubtful players will be able to fuel and support an Idris right at launch...

And if they can? What's the issue? Do we really think all players and NPCs are going to have the same starting ships and they will only level up with us as if the universe began only after we enter the game? No, that would be very unrealistic and quite dull. There's going to be small ships, medium ships, big ships, and capital ships at the very start of the game. Add in the fact that NPCs are supposed to outnumber players 10:1, and there is no reason to be concerned about someone starting with an Idris. This is going to be an open world sandbox game, not an arena multiplayer match.

For the record I don't have an Idris. I have a Constellation and a Super Hornet.

Actually that's exactly what it's going to be for much of the game. Even if trade and exploration are your thing there will be dogfights.

I just don't want a game like Star Trek Online, where the nuts that spend hundreds or thousands of dollars have an insta-win over essentially everybody else in the game.

And yes, there is winning. Even using your criteria that "having fun is winning", it's not fun when you're outclassed at every non-NPC turn, or if you're relegated to 2nd, 3rd or 4th class citizenry because you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars out of the gate.

Sith's End of LTI Exchange Program

We are now one month from the end of LTI, November 26th. While not game breaking, its a nice little perk.

As such I am willing to help any current members who wish to convert their current Non-LTI package(s) or add-on ships to the LTI versions.
I recommend converting packages before the Alpha slots are gone, currently at 2,987 and falling.

Important Notes:
Gifting requires you to send me the email address you used for your RSI account, if you do not wish to disclose this information I can't help you.

Any ship/package must be at least 24 hours old before it can be melted and converted.

Limited time ships/packages without LTI may or may not be able to be converted at this time due to availability.

For ships/packages where the LTI version costs less than the New Backer version you will be notified of the difference before the conversion.
You will receive additional melt-able items(skins/ships) totaling the difference so that you are still getting full value for the amount you pledged.
*Exception* - The Non-LTI Digital Scout is $5 cheaper than the LTI version because it does not include Alpha/Beta. For an even swap you will need to gift one(1) skin along with the package.

This conversion is monetarily free, all it costs is time. If you wish to leave a tip please do so in the form of skins so that we continue funding the best space game ever.

Please PM me with any questions. I will try to reply asap, usually within a few hours.

I thought I'd post this up one last time before the end of LTI. I also have access to the Pirate Pack - LTI and the Digital Pirate -LTI which contain the Cutlass for those interested.
Also keep in mind that with the new Mustang starter ship coming out, you will be able to trade your LTI Aurora or Aurora package for an equivalent Mustang ship/package according to CIG.

Also a heads up to anyone who is looking for limited ships:
As mentioned a few pages back all limited ships aside from the Idris-M, Scythe, and Super Hornet will be up for sale again before the end of LTI. The announcement is slated to be made next Friday(15th) but I don't know if the sale is starting then or not. Sources have also hinted that the Idris-P will only be sold on the 26th and that there is a chance that one or both of the stretch goal alien ships(Xa'in Scout, Banu Merchantman) will be up for sale then as well.

So having never played Freelancer, I managed to get my friend's copy and give the game a try. For a game released in 2003, it's still pretty darn good even today! Obviously the mouse aiming is a bit simplistic and arcade-like, but I love the atmosphere, the comm chatter, NPCs feel more alive in Freelancer than they do in other, more modern space games. I know the game did not fulfill its promises, but I think it's still a good game and gives me a slightly better understanding of what to expect from SC. Now I just gotta finish it in 5 days before X Rebirth comes out.

This is currently the only game I am really looking forward to. And its going to be so long before its released. 🙁

Im also sort of interested in Elder Scrolls Online, but Im sort of tired of the fantasy thing. StarCitizen with both space sim gameplay and fps gameplay would be freaking amazing if they pull it off.

Well thats up for debate. Anything that gives you an edge in game is pay to win in my book. If they were merely selling cosmetic items than it wouldnt be pay to win. I can handle pay to win as long as its realistically possible to get the same stuff through game play.

There are some pretty impressive Freelancer custom persistent servers out there that let you pilot every type of ship and have faction wars and cool stuff like that. It's still a bit shallow and wears thin eventually, but could be fun if you actually got into it and actively played with a group of people instead of dicking around by yourself.
