Now that I'm older and make more money than when I was a teenager though I have less time for gaming. It evens those demographics out some so it's nice to see that's how he's looking at it. Some games are impossible to excel in unless you're spending tons of time in, this new F2P model of maximizing time spent in game through monetary transactions is a good change for us busy professionalish type people.

I'm not seeing anything to get scared of in his quotes about game breaking pay2win type scenarios.

I agree, I don't have all the time in the world like I used to where I could just play and play to my heart's content. Being able to shortcut through the grind is very much appreciated.

I guess it really just comes down to how the game mechanics end up working out. If I feel like I'm having fun and not behind the curve because I didn't buy a tank(ship) then I'm good with that. Now, if somebody can just put down say $50 and have the best ship in the game and everybody is flying that ship but me, then I'm not happy.

I just don't understand how WoT can be implemented into a MMO Privateer type game. If real $$ can be converted into in-game credits...well then aren't credits pretty much everything? Just get a bunch of credits and buy everything fancy.

I try to envision a game like this with Gold/Credits/Experience type of economy and I don't understand how a trade game could survive with this.

... and then what? Does everyone else suddenly lose the game? No. Does the credit buyer suddenly win the game? Again, nope.

If it's a combination of credits/skills/whatever then It might be fine. Like, if you can buy the "best" ship, but the way that the skill mechanics work means that you can still only fill a specific role with that ship then everything is gravy. (like, if you can only viably be an explorer, but also can't be fully combat oriented at the same time... gotta pick one or the other, or a mediocre middle)

I'd imagine that this game is going to be more complex than just this though. I would certainly hope so if they are going to compete with Eve Online.

I just think it's going to be extremely difficult to implement. Everyone is looking at WoT as this holy grail, but honestly, I think it fits the genre almost perfectly.

Expanding WoT formula for cash will be...interesting.

But look at Planetside 2, although I dislike the game, it also has an interesting station cash concept for F2P. Just from my short stint in the game, it's hard to compete or do well without it...but it's F2P...

If I pay $39.99 or $49.99 or even $59.99 for Roberts new game, then I also have to fork down around $50 over my play period for misc. station cash just to compete well, I might get irritated rather quickly.

I am jumping to huge conclusions here though.

Is all of the game going to be PvP, or is it going to have PvE areas? If there are PvE stretches in the game, then I don't get the F2P whining.

It's going to be EVE-style once you're in the MP game. So technically it's PvP everywhere, but in the "high security" areas, trying to attack someone who doesn't consent to it will quickly result in a harsh response from the authorities.

This game only has to be better then privateer 2. Maybe we should start a campaign to get Clive Owen doing a cheesy flight tutorial via old school FMV....

there are also single player pve scenarios in the "squadron 42" missions

The one who's going to have to spend $50 to keep up is the guy who has little to no time to play. Those who play hours a day will be just fine.

Well I'm in - got the Aurora LX. By the time this thing comes out, I may even have time to play. I have to get a new joystick before that happens though.

If any game ever gets me to look into Occulus Rift, it will be this one.

Those cockpit views are amazing.

Wow, hadn't checked in on this for awhile. Impressive show so far. Is this game SIM in the manner that Eve combat is? Or is it actually point and shoot? I was a bit put off that he was using a 360 controller :/ but I suppose that plays into the having an actual flight stick.

I'm a bit confused about what they are selling though. Is there 2 different games?

No it definitely is not Eve. Star Citizen is first person on ground on ship walking about sit in the pilots seat and do all sorts of person things, instead of third person which is quite different however I think we have had enough of third person things. Time for more first person things.

I feel the same way. I want to see through the player's eyes in a game that is supposed to immerse you in the environment.

3rd person games always make me feel like I'm just an observer.

basically that. there is no "best" ship; it's all relative and depends on what you want to do. a ship that's good for hauling cargo isn't going to be good for dogfighting. or even within fighting ships, maybe one is more agile but has less armor, and another has more armor but is less agile. stuff like that for the most part.

once you buy the game, that's all you'll need to spend to have a good time. you can completely ignore what other people are doing if you want (just gotta be careful venturing out of uee space).

yes, plenty of pve missions and mini-campaigns within the star citizen universe. if you don't want pvp, you don't have to have it provided you don't venture off into the middle of nowhere where all the criminals, pirates and outlaws hang out...lol.

also, now that we've passed the 9 million dollar stretch goal, anyone who pledges for a ship up until the new website goes online will have lifetime insurance on that ship (details in this comm link update). so if that was holding you back from getting something other than the aurora, now is the time to pledge.
