I participated in this deal over a month ago after the usual Staples hassles. We'll I got the rebate and the price, but the memory won't work with any of the three computers I have in the house. PNY RMA'd a PC100 as a replacement and that didn't work either. Only shows half the memory in ALL THREE computers. The PNY "configurator" lists it for the motherboard and it still only shows half. I am sure I'm not the only one. Keep it in
mind next time when ordering PNY memory.

"PNY has been working fine in my boards, what kind of main boards are you using, some older boards will only recognize half the memory size even though they claim to be able to see up to 512."

One has a Soyo 6BA+IV BX motherboard with 512MB of ram (a mixture of Micron and KingMax 128MB), the second one is a Soyo 6BA+100 BX board with 512MB of ram (all 128 MB Micron), and the third is an MSI 6163Pro with 512MB of ram (all K-Byte/Spectek......two 256MB sticks). In all cases the memory was completely removed and the 512 PNY stick was inserted and would only show 256MB at boot. Bios changes did not help. Despite the fact that it was recommended for the Soyo mainboard at the site. They exchanged it for a PC100 and it did the same thing. I searched the user groups at Google, and it seems that this problem occurs with Kingston and PNY more than with any other ram. Soyo claims that "Registered" ram should be used for both 256 and 512, but all three machines work with the 256MB sticks from K-Byte and Kingmax. Supposedly it has something to do with some companies producing higher density chips to cut manufacturing costs. Either way, there is one company that I don't think you can go wrong with and they are reasonable as well..........Crucial/Micron.

Originally posted by: altonb1 The 512MB chip is working fine in my board, too. I have a PC Chips 810LMR board (POS) and it sees the 512 and the 256 (non-PNY) RAM I'm using for a total of 768MB. My only problem is that I am running 98se and it is running kinda screwy since bumping the ram up so high (Previously has a 256 and a 128 stick for 384MB total) I THOUGHT I had the proper tweaks (system.ini) for 98 to run with >512MB, but maybe I missed something. Oh well. I'm about ready to jump up to XP, anyway.

Okay, so what MinFilecache and MaxFilecache settings are you using? The article says to use 25% of your RAM as the Max setting, but it also states that anything over 32,768 is a waste. I set mine as listed with max of 32,768, but if I use the 25% formula, I would be 196,608. should I change to the 196608 value or leave it at 32MB?

Vcache settings

I have an XP/Win98se dual boot PC with 1gig of memory, and 98se works just fine after setting the vcache.

Dont forget the MaxPhysPage setting in SYSTEM.INI too. That setting can also be accessed via System Info in Win98se.
