Spent 2 hours on the phone calling all Staples in NYC area including Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Can't find any except the system showed (1) units of Sony available in a couple stores. However, when I call the stores, they all claimed that it's damaged. I said I don't mind damaged that I'll buy it. The rep on the other end of the phone said there is no physical inventory that they probably sent them back .......

Oh well, Spent $4 subway, another 3.5 hours back and forth to visit a few stores in Manhattan to try my luck, no Sony in Union Square / 14 Street as the other netter posted (may be I get there too late).

But they have HP 8250i on clearance for $120.00. (2) units available in the locked glass cabinet. I asked the guy to check the Sony and Yamaha, no luck. I grabbed one of the HP anyway ..... because I have 14-day to think about it to return for a refund.

So, now I got a HP 8250i

And my cost: $120 + 8.25% tax + $4 subway + ~$1.5 (each phone call in New York cost approx $0.045/call off-peak)

Total cost $135.4 and 5.5 hours of my time .....

I doubt if it is a good deal anymore. :-(

If anyway want the HP 8250i, please e-mail me.

It looks like I am in trouble with the accountant. I was so proud of my easy price matches of Staples to Circuit City. She looked at the receipts tonight and said

"Where is the 110% price match???!!!! 249.99-79.90 makes for a hell of a price match difference and a hell of a deal on these CD writers."

Does CC still do the 110%??? She told me the website still lists it but she didn't know if they still did it in the store. I told her if they still did it she could go in tomorrow and get the 110%. Her response was HMPH..you thought it was so easy now YOU go get the 110%.

LOL

So for those that got this Spressa we can make it an even HOTTER deal.

I have had the Acer 8*4*32 with 8mb buffer for about 9 months and am very happy. You can do just about anything while burning because of the large buffer. This includes watching DVD's amd gaming. And yes, it works with CD Clone.

For me the reason is the small fan in the Yamah CD drive. You PC guys won't even notice it with your many fans.
I prefer a quite Cd drive to a fast one. The Sony is much heavier too, with the power supply etc.

CoolMint: The reason is probably that it's compatible with Mac and PC and that's portable between systems without any problems. Since I have two computers, it might be nice, but the lack of CloneCD support as well as going from a Plextor 8x20 to a 4x4x6 is not attractive. I did manage to snag a Spressa Saturday morning on the way out of town, but I'm not sure what I'll do with it. I'll probably eGay it. The guy behind the counter had his jaw hit the floor when he saw the price. "How did you know about that???" he asked. It was rather funny.

got my Sony at local store (the last one in warehouse:D ) but really like YAMAHA brand and also other things make me try staples.com today. they show it available on web and also on the rep's screen, but 379! OK, tell her someone bought one for 99 and when and which store, she put me on hold and called the store, guess what, I got it for 99 plus coupon, so the total is about 80!!!

Could you (and other people in this regard) please give a more intelligible description of the position of "my local store" or "my store"?

Though it is nice to learn that you got one, and most of us wish you all best with that, it would be much more helpful for us to learn WHERE you got it and WHERE they are "out" of it.

Thank you!

xDeLiRiOuSx,

Sorry. The mini deal hunter in the family sold the extras. She tells our friends that she is running a business to pay for college and she can't give away items at cost but she will make them a deal. They are standing in line if we can get some more.

I didn't know what I was going to do with two carts of 5.00 price matched toys and video games from Wal-Mart but they are selling like crazy out of my basement.

Here is why I am just the poor chauffeur and bodyguard to the two Deal Hunters in the family. I tried to do the price match via a Staples CSR on the Yamaha. She wouldn't do it. I talked to a supervisor. She wouldn't do it. My GF calls and the Supervisor ends up admitting she is confused about the price match policy (my GF can do that to people) and said my GF could talk to the Supervisor of Supervisors when they got out of a meeting. My GF gets Corporate on the phone and it is a done deal.

Had a local store carried the item in stock in the very beginning I might have had more luck. However, because no local store had it to price match the red flag came up and questions started being asked.

I shouldn't have bragged about my Circuit City price match because now my GF is making me go back and get the 110% on those Spressas. I know if I had kept my mouth shut she would have done it for me.
WOMEN!!!!<big grin>

I went to 3 different Staples in Boston, and none carry any Sony CDR drives. Is this common that they say they don't carry them, or is it likely they used to and have already clearanced them and sold all of them?

but I think you can find enough info in this thread to Id one store who sold it on clearance then call and p/m, at least that's what I did. good luck!

The Yamahas don't support CloneCD? So I can't copy CD's or VCD's or Playstation games? I'm not sure what Clone Cd does. Help?

Heads up: there is one Yamaha 8/4/24 available for about $100 at the Staples on Route 1 in Lawrenceville, NJ as of lunchtime today. There were no Sony's.

Man, Houston loses out, since I can't find a store anywhere in the city. I could have sworn I seen a Staples store, but oh well.

Some people's thought processes are just fascinating.

1. See a deal at anandtech
2. Wow, this stuff is cheap
3. Wait a second, but it's not something I can use
4. Well, I will find a use for it
5. Well, maybe not, but I can always fle*bay it
6. Oops, it's not really a popular item at fle*bay and can't make much profit so I won't sell it on fle*bay
7. I can always sell it to coworkers and friends
8. Oops, nobody wants it
9. I really can't find any use for this!
10. Oh, well, I will simply return it to the store

Meanwhile, there are other people who could use it but can't find one.

Fascinating...

In between steps 5 and 6 is when it's all sold out.

That's why everyone should really pricematch first before buying. This way you get it cheaper (by 10% or 55% depending) and also the people who want it can get it from the real store

Well, for this particular deal pricematching is &quot;iffy&quot; at best since the item is a closeout. I have never seen a pricematch policy that matches closeouts.

That being said, I have read that people pricematched it with the Staples online store. I tried, a few times, didn't succeed because I was told it (Yamaha) was a closeout item.

I'm sure some people did get a pricematch but it was dependant on getting a clueless CSR, which I obviously did not on my repeated calls.

I also tried Circuit City. I was shown a copy of their pricematch policy in the store. It specifically said the item had to be advertised by a competitor for CC to match the price. When I came home I checked their online store and it was the same policy. Here is the relevant line:

&quot;Our Low Price Guarantee does not apply against a competitor's tagged price that is not in an advertisement&quot;

As you can see that's pretty plain, it must be advertised. I know someone here (I think) posted they got a pricematch with CC by showing a receipt. That did not work for me. The manager in my local store obviously knew the guidelines of their pricematching policy better than the manager the previous poster encountered.
