Whatever you do - don't call! I called when this thread was first posted, just to ask whether they had any external Sony drives in. The guy said they had two and I told him to put them on hold, without asking for a price. I got there 10 minutes later and they were gone - I guess they figured out they were on clearance and took them. They played stupid about it. Good luck......

tn69:
The drives I got where in closed glass shelf with $99 price tag.
Guys there new about them. But maybe this is only in our local store.

Went to my local staples again 😛
picked up 2 Acers (all in stock). No Yamaha :|
In the store, I called 1-800-3staples, no these products for online store
After this, I headed to bestbuy. Weird, bb does not have them too 🙁

Did anyone look on the box of their Yamahas? Mine says Interface SCSI-3.... I was all happy for a sec till I openedit and saw it was like the stick on the front said, EIDE....
That may be why Staples.com doesnt have these on their site, but instead have the SCSI 3 ones...... They read the box panel and not the sticker.....

Thanks for the headsup on this one--picked up a Yamaha 8x for $99.90.(Got the last one) They were out of the $80 Sonys. The guy also mentioned another one for $20--an Acer 4x maybe? Not sure.

da bastard
I saw the same: SCSI requried on the box, buy E-IDE sticker
Opened the box - EIDE drive - made in march 2000 - firmware is not the latest - just made upgrade.
First 2 disks OK using EZ-CD at 8x on Imation media.

just picked up the sony spressa for $79 and they also had the acer for $129 , didnt see the yamaha tho.Funny thing was when i got the assistant to price check it she couldnt believe it so she went and checked it again with another person who checked it at the till and same price came up , they were both gobsmacked 🙂
also they had one more left but as soon as he saw the price he snagged it up , i was gonna buy both 🙁.

I called my staples in Woodland Hills, CA.. and they told me that they were all issued clearance sheets on items if they had them in stock. She looked on the list and said they did not have any cdrw's on clearance.. confirmed that they did not have any yamahas in stock soooooo sounds like if they have them they will be on clearance and the people working there will not know unless they look at the list.. because they are not marked. You may want to just call your local stores and see if they have them in stock first.. if so.. go there and they will be on clearance.. Good luck🙂

For those that could get a sony Spressa...Could you please go back and see if you could get another for me? My local Staples doesn't even carry them. (or so they say). Or if you have one already that you are willing to part with, I will paypal the $$$. (paypal id faster since I don't have my ecount all set up yet)

At a staples in philadelphia - they have (had?) 3 yamaha 8x4x24's and 2 sony spressa 4x4x6. the manager claims he had just spoke with corporate about this "not 20 minutes ago". This staples is about 4-8 weeks old. The spressa rings up as $179 or something, and the mgr explains why:

"you see, we have the NEW register system. You can tell if its a NEW register system if the receipt is printed on thermal paper (like ye olde fax) -- what's happening is... the older system is reading from the data that's used to check sku's, qty and such and charging people the incorrect price. THAT IS THE INCORRECT PRICE!! The correct price is on my POS system, see?"

Indeed the price was $179.xx -- so is this guy for real or was he hosin' me? He also said "if they were really that price, i would take two and xxx here would take the others" "other staples are asking for me to give them these, but i won't do it cuz they won't be selling them at the correct price..." so what does he care?

When I got drive, the price $99.90 was posted.
Manager told me drive is discontinued or Staples will not carry them.
The price $XX.90 tells them that this is a clearence item.

Morkinva,

You probably have just been "Stapled"..or in other words "hosed".

My girlfriend called our local Staples and they had one Sony left and she made the person swear on his mother that it would go under lock and key and that it would be available to her tomorrow. The guy said it was on clearance and he was the only one that had the key tomorrow and she would have it.

We will see if she gets hosed on the deal. She will Staple them when she whips out a 25 coupon and gets the drive dirt cheap. Now if only there was a rebate...
I don't know the specs on this Spressa but someone on E*bay is selling a 4X4X6 USB with a bid so far of 149.99

I just got 1 Acer and 1 Yamaha at Phoenix area.
Dunno why I bought them, maybe because of good deal ?
I need to replace my Ricoh MP6200A, so maybe I'll keep one
which one is better ? nobody really answer that yet.
and from most replies, I gather that Yamaha drive doesn't support CloneCD
(it said so too on CloneCD site), and Acer does support CloneCD (need newest firmware).
So, maybe I answer my own question since I need CloneCD 🙂
btw, even though you didn't see the Yamaha unit, ask for it anyway.
That's what happen to me, I ask for it and they somehow "produce" it.
Still some Acer left, no Sony though.
If u want to know where exactly to buy the drive, drop me an email.

Man am I PO'ed. I went to the Staples in Little Rock, Arkansas and they had 2 left. I exclaimed how it was a good deal and the salesman laughed and said he and another salesman had bought Acer cdrw's for $20 this morning. He said "I got so many cdrw's, I don't know what to do with them."

What a jerk. Well, I did get my acer and it is an 8X4X32 with 8MB buffer.

YES!

Larry

I just got the last Yamaha 8x4x24 cdrw drive at my local Staples (St. Clairsville, OH) for the $99.90 price.

The marked price was $249.99 and when it was rung up it showed $99.90!

No Sony's or Acer's here.

Thanks for the great post......
