Since their out of the WD 1 TB online (and their customers service told me it was "highly doubtful" they would get anymore before the sale ended), I'm going to wait and hope that they run this sale again. Maybe their "Easter" sale. LOL.

Lame fockers told me Sunday I couldn't use "Cash cards" online or on the phone. I put "cash cards" in quotes because that's what staples calls them. I've had them for over a year, and I haven't been able to spend them like cash anywhere...EVEN STAPLES.com!!! So, I finally found something worth spending them on, and I can't use them except in the store. I was told I would have to wait for the store to open Monday monday to use them and they would place the order online.
Well of course everyone knows they went out of stock of the 500gb Passport drives on Sunday night. I went to the store Monday and two employees said they were out online, in the store, and out everywhere in the entire area around me. So, today I rechecked. It turns out according to their computer system EVERY store within a 100 miles has them in stock. That's roughly 10 stores. I called my local store and specifically asked the mentally handicapped employee for the part number and not the "deal", and was told they were in stock. I was headed that way anyway so I pulled into the parking lot and went in.
I walked to the shelf and picked up the empty store display box and gave it to the manager. The manager (that's right Mr. Numbhead himself) with the 500GB 2.5" Passport shelf display box, goes and gets it for me. He tells the cashier to ring it up and accept my online coupon since online was out of stock. IT WAS THE MYBOOK DRIVE. OMG, I have rarely seen such an abundance of unintelligent life in one location. I got him to go back and get the correct one from the back. AFTER the whole deal with coupon was done and all my "cash cards" were used up, I owed less than $5. I took that oportunity to tell the manager what a big pile of crap that was shoveled my way the night before that everywhere was out of stock. I showed him the printout I brought with me shwoing EVERY store supposedly had them in stock. He didn't have to say anything. I could see on his face he knew what I was told was just BS.
I used to spend thousands in Staples like I'm sure many here. Now, I only go there when it's a clearance item. I just hate walking into the store for fear of being assaulted with stupidity as I was yesterday and today.
BTW, sorry for venting so much, but my lesson is be persistant. if they say they are out of stock...RECHECK. I suspect very few stores are out of stock on this if my area is any indication.

rivethead thanks for that. I followed your link and paid the $1 and the coupon does indeed say "Valid in Staples U.S. stores, by phone, or online at staples.com".
Even though the link says only by phone and online, once you get the coupon it says what I quoted above.

If you buy the $1 coupon from the below link, they will send you a link in your e-mail where you can go and print it. I don't think you actually need to even print it, I think you can just go to the store and give the cash register person the 16 digit coupon code and they will punch it in and it will work.

Got my 500GB WD Passport in today, just plugged it in, I'm about to format it from the default FAT32 to NTFS. I hate how they pre-format large hard drives FAT32 just because of compatibility, I wonder how many people that are clueless about stuff like this just keep the default file system, and therefore unable to transfer any files that are over 4GB to it....and have no clue why.
What are your guys suggestions for the "Allocation Unit Size?"
The default is 4096 bytes, but I'm mainly going to be storing large files on this hard drive, but I'm wondering if changing the allocation unit size will make a noticeable difference in speed at all?
For those that don't know about allocation unit size:
The allocation unit size should be chosen to best utilize the space on the disk for all files and should not be selected just on the size of the largest file you plan to store. The allocation unit size of 64kB means that everytime you go to store data on the drive, a minimum of 64kB is allocated. If you only need 8kB, then you're allocating 56kB more than you need which results in waste and fragmentation. Select the allocation unit size based on the average size of the files you plan to store.

Picked mine up last night in store. Total was $81.11 with coupon + snickers bar.
There are some utilities and documentation on the drive, so be aware before you format. Reformatting takes several hours for NTFS (4 hours or so). Drive is actually 931 GB after format.
One of my old drives is about to crap out and is starting to click and lose power every once and awhile, so will be moving over data today to my new drive.

I just bought the 1 TB Seagate HD from the Portland OR store...$76.63 out the door...I bought a water to...I didnt have the actual coupon with me, just the code and they took it. If anyone wants the code PM me and I'll give it to you...they have alot of Seagates still in stk.

Talk about a good deal...The 750GB went (briefly) to $59.99 after two $20 instant rebates today. Many people at SD called and PM'ed the price to $59.99 - $25 coupon + tax = $34.99 + tax. Talk about a hot deal! :shocked:
Too bad I bought the 1TB instead of the 750GB, lol!

They didn't buy, they simply PM'ed so Staples simply refunded the difference ($20 + tax in this case). If the order would have been re-rung, you are correct, it would not have worked.
