LOL that's such BS! Glad I read all the way through this thread before I pulled the trigger.

Think I'm going to return the WD 1 TB drive. I stumbled across this looking for updated firmware. I don't need a 1 TB of data going down the tubes in 6 months. :frown:

The standby function is inoperative on my drive anyways, so it gives me a reason to return.

Ohh well I'm sure there will be a better deal in a few weeks on something more reliable.

Edit: Here is another link to checkout at amazon. Plenty of 1 star reviews.

Interesting. My WD 6400AAKS was giving "S.M.A.R.T. Capable But Command Failed" errors after I flashed my A7GM-S mobo to BIOS P11 (AM3 support). Couldn't boot off of the HD, thought that maybe the HD had died.

Well, i flashed back to BIOS P10, and everything seemed to be working again.

Wow... Way to poop on my parade... Thanks though. I now understand why this damned thing is so slow. I was trying to back up my HD's contents to the MyBook yesterday, and even after 18 hours of copying, I couldn't even back up 50% of the 320gb I was trying to back up. I eventually canceled, because I couldn't take the wait anymore.

Then again, the main reason why I bought the MyBook is for playing videos off of it with my WD Media Player. For this purpose, it's more than adequate, and there is no other 1Tb WD external HD's for the same low price anywhere. I went for the WD on purpose because I though it would be better for compatibility reasons for the media player.

Staples should be sued for misinformation.. I'm sure they are covered against that though.

The slowness is USB 2.0. The drive is easily faster than the USB 2.0 of the PC that it's connected to. The problem for me is that I wanted a 7,200 rpm 16MB cache drive that I could pull from the enclosure and use as a system drive (and then possibly use an older drive in the My Book enclosure for USB backup, etc.). I returned it on Tuesday.

I see....

Interesting though. If I understand what you are saying correctly, because of USB 2.0, a 7200rpm HD wouldn't be any faster in my particular case, since it would only xfer as fast as it's connection allows...

BTW, can someone tell me how easy these things are to open, and swap the HD inside?

EDIT: Nvm.. found this: http://www.carltonbale.com/200...se-removing-the-drive/
