Stand your ground. Another right/law that doesn't apply to black people

I've said this for years in ATP&N. Same thing for open carry. IF there is a crime and police show up the first armed black person becomes the suspect.
In June 2020, at the height of racial tension in the country, Wilson fired his handgun at a group of white teens in a truck who were shouting slurs and trying to run Wilson and his family off the road. One of those bullets killed a 17-year-old in the back seat, reports say.
According to Georgia law, a person is justified in using force if they believe that said force is necessary to defend themselves. When self-defense becomes deadly, there’s a question of whether “stand your ground” is justified. However, when you consider how George Zimmerman got away with killing Trayvon Martin, the law was applied to accommodate it.

Yup, like I’ve said for years, self hate is transmitted and internalized by fear of remembering being made to feel worthless as children with all of that hate searching endlessly for somebody weaker and more stigmatized to feel safe to dump on. This is why once some segment or subset gets tagged as an object of bigotry, the process becomes self perpetuating.

Unfortunately the cure for hate is love. O loving person needs for other people to suffer for their own inner self hate. All you can do is try to love yourself enough that the attempts to stigmatize fail to have effect.

At some level racism hurts because we have all learned the pain of feeling worthless. It was all a lie. You have a better chance to overcome that yourself for yourself than the before the whole world does.
 
Stand Your Ground laws aren't really for everyone.

As an after-thought, It protects someone who kills someone else if there is a remotely plausible case that it was in self-defense...unless there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that shows the killer wasn't actually defending themselves. Mix in race, and you better have an overwhelming amount of evidence if you want to prove someone wasn't defending themselves.

Long-term, the laws are essentially just vehicles that will allow our oligarchs' private militaries to avoid civil and criminal liabilities for when they have to put us down for: fill-in-the-blank.
 
I don't think this verdict has much to do with the stand your ground law. Self-defense, in any legal form, is not available to a charge of manslaughter, because you cannot accidentally kill someone in self-defense. What actually happened was that the prosecution had initially charged only murder, but in the middle of the trial, when it appeared the jury would likely acquit, the prosecution convinced the judge to add manslaughter as a lesser included offense. One way you get to manslaughter is if a jury decides you honestly believed that your life was at risk - and hence, no malice - but that your belief or your actions were not reasonable under the circumstances. I'd honestly have to know a lot more about the specific facts to render an opinion on that.

In any event, the real controversy is the judge not instructing the jury on the misdemeanor version of manslaughter. That issue is going up on appeal.

How would you have suggested he defend himself under the given circumstances. Or does he just have to take one for the team?

this isnt news.
Since before we were a nation MOST of our laws were made to protect the rights of white land owning christian males.
The real problem is nothing has changed in hundreds of years. I guess not enough people see it, or not enough people care.

Like way too many laws, they are pretty explicitly used to protect white men.

Stand your ground laws also don't protect white women (if they shoot white men). There's several that are in prison for murder now because they shot stalkers/exes/etc despite seemingly clearly falling under stand your ground.

Can’t the governor commute her sentence or offer some form of clemency? I feel like this could be one of those “traps” where they are daring Tony Evers to do something so they can paint him as “soft on crime”.
 
Crystul Kizer's story sounds a bit suspicious...but at the same time, she deserves some compassion. I don't know that a 17 year old without a good upbringing would know what the hell he/she is doing. This sentence just seems excessive.

I'm sorry but there is a fairly serious difference there which is that from my reading of the case she tracked down and killed the person five days after he was released.

While what happened to her is a heinous crime and the guy who trafficked her should not have been treated nearly so leniently you can't have a situation where victims of crimes are able to kill the perpetrators without consequence.

Rittenhouse getting away with what amounts to voluntary manslaughter at a minimum IMO was also a terrible injustice. Fuck that guy. I don't think the answer is to let other people get away with the premeditated killing of people though.
 
When the hell are “the coloreds” going to realize that the laws are to protect their betters from people like THEM?
