I'm looking to buy a *RELIABLE* NVME-USB external adapter, that doesn't disconnect randomly, can keep up the close to 1GB/s speed.
So far all adapter's reviews contain frighteningly high % of reports of malfunction, random disconnects, sub-par speeds, falling to even under USB 2.0 speeds, etc.
There are 3 main chipsets in the market: JMicron JMS583, Asmedia ASM2362, and Realtek RTL9210 (no product has surfaced with the latter yet, so no REAL reviews, experiences yet UPDATE: it is on the market already).
Also ASUS has a new product, ROG Strix Arion, but there isn't enough feedback about it yet, and I mean real life feedback not just being able to run a few benchmarks, but real stress test to see if the device (adapter) can keep it up, without disconnecting or slowing down hard.
I would really appreciate any feedback from those who have GOOD experiences during stress-tests, like tons of random 4k writes with a stable speed, cloning 100's of GB-s at a stable high speed close to 1GB/s.
I know SSD's very well, so please stick to the point and don't start to educate me on how their speed falls after some writes, etc. I'm aware and this is NOT the point.
You can help if you can point me to a STABLE and RELIABLE NVMe-USB-C adapter that WORKS as expected.
Thank you in advance!

ah no wonder, you are in neighbouring country, i sinkie cannot see the listing available in SG, also dont have that seller. Thats why i say the only listing super expensive in Shopee SG lol.
Oops, looks like you've gotta get from China then.

Maybe if I'm free tomorrow I'll take a look at shopee SG and see what I can find

Nah no need to waste time i look through all liao, all is selling the either NVMe or SATA only. The 1 listing that have dual protocol is 50sgd lol. I not buying anymore enclosures anyways, manage to get a good price on the UGreen dual protocol enclosure. Problem with buying from china is having to deal with the forwarding like EZship, so is extra price of shipping on top of the price of the item, even if it is about same or slightly cheaper.

Actually like same for aliexpress, if Lazada/ shopee sometimes stack voucher is cheaper than aliexpress, like the ugreen for this case, then better to buy from lazada / shopee lor, otherwise i just buy direct from aliexpress, sometimes they give free shipping and still cheaper than taobao + forwarding.

Haha even aliexpress dont have the c370.

Hi there, it looks like that I bricked the enclosure by flashing a new firmware. Do you know you to fix it?
Easy.

Find SPI flash IC on board. It looks smthng like this:
PUYA P25D40H on JEYI i9 GTR board:
946712[1].jpg

What you have to do is to short 1,5 & 6 pins (with tweezers, for example) of SPI flash IC and then plug USB to PC. Pinout is:
spi-flash-8pin[1].jpg

This procedure will force RT9120 to start with internal ROM, not with external f/w in SPI flash.

Now you can unshort SPI pins (while USB still plugged!) and to try flashing as normal. Lood luck!

Damn odd that even AliExpress doesn't offer the C370.

Taobao is a great option, but warranty is gonna be a headache.

Ah, about the cable, i think any decent A-to-C cable should work, but don't quote me on that. I too, am curious how fast regular A-to-C cables can go. Gotta test with my Arion Lite soon i guess.

Damn lazada service rep for ugreen, say they dont sell. I message the Ugreen on aliexpress, and they tell me its this cable... what a shame i should have bought this instead of the other cable, at least i would be able to test it out. Now im just stuck with 2 normal charging cables at USB 2 speeds lol. Its also listed on lazada, but it officially states 5gbps at USB 3.0.

5 gbps seems low lol. i'm curious if any other c-to-c cable would perform the same.

Has anybody tried any of these USB enclosures with SSDs larger than 2TB? I often read something like "supports up to 2TB" on product pages and wonder whether this is a hard limitation of the chipset or firmware or stated just because 2TB was the largest size available back when the product information was compiled.

Hello there, has anyone tried using a NVMe enclosure with Samsung phone? I have problems using JMicron JMS583 based enclosures with my WD PC SN720 NVMe 512GB SSD. I have tried 3 different enclosures to use with my Samsung Galaxy S10, it connected once and no more success. It looks like power issues, it works when connected via a powered hub / USB-C docking station. Does anyone use regularly any enclosure based on a different chipset? I would also appreciate powered enclosure, but didn't find any. Any reccomendation appreciated.

Thank you,
malda

The SSK feels pretty alright, given its price point. Unlike the Arion Lite that uses an ASMedia chip, the SSK has a Realtek RTL9210B, with a unique 1.26.5 firmware.

The UGREEN M.2 SATA/NVME Hard Drive Enclosure (Model number CM400) has arrived. Funnily enough, it does come with both a USB Type A to C and C to C cable included, an extra fastener, the case, and some manuals.

Unfortunately the USB A 3 Gen 2 port on my motherboard is spoilt and cant really see the enclosure / drive. Will try it later on my brother's computer. This enclosure is very stable, even during crystaldiskmark I was moving it around and no disconnections.

I am very happy with this UGREEN enclosure. Mind you the Teamgroup MP33 Pro SSD was directly moved from the Orico M2PJM-C3 into the UGREEN CM400 and these are the speeds and stable.

EDIT: The enclosure got hot after 2 rounds of crystaldiskmark, quite glad there is the silicon/rubber piece surrounding it, makes touching/ carrying it much easier and safer

EDIT 2: USB A to C cable USB 3.1 Gen 2 port. Seems like the included cable indeed does work.

Question:

Does your ugreen enclosure come with thermal pads?

here’s the ssk.. it even has a thermal pad for the rtl9210b.. so far it has been stable without any issues..
Hmm maybe it actually have, just that is hidden and i cannot see. As far as I can tell, the PCB is only at the front similar to yours, but from the front can only see some resistors and the USB port, then the other side seems to be blocked with thermal pads? So it is possibly already done for the user.

I have pretty much the same question: got an ICY BOX IB-1817M-C31 with 2107 labeled A2 A Version of the JM583 and have a strange firmware reporting of 133.01.00.06 - any chance to relate this tonthe original FW 20x?

Could you please provide photos of the PCBA? If it can be disassembled. I would appreciate it a lot.

You could try hard reset method if you can't reflash with the proper way e.g. it is bricked. I have posted here the procedure for jms580 which is the same for jms583. Basically you force usb to firmware update using tweezer shorting specific pins of a rom, at same time you insert this in usb and wait for 3 seconds, then remove tweezers Then you can reflash using latest firmware and app..

I should have made an instruction pdf.., all info was in that thread I can't remember its number.

Not sure this is what you asked... Try this only if jms583 is bricked.

I found this post while looking to methods to unbrick RTL9210 ORICO drive. I messed the upgrade and it failed for me. The bricked Orico is now live and kicking again.
Here is your original post - https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/stable-nvme-usb-adapter.2572973/page-17#post-40347456

And here is what I had to do, being a copy monkey 🙊 So I find a chip on the board that is small and has 2x3 aspect ratio and read whats printed on the top. It was a P25Q40SH chip. A little bit of research and turns out to be some programmable chip. Here is the link to the spec sheet from the semi conductor/ manufacturers website - https://www.puyasemi.com/uploadfiles/2021/05/202105201039533953.pdf
I look for same CS# and Vcc pin description and with happy tears in my eyes, I thought it wouldn't hurt to short them and see if that works, and, It did work for me. I did not have a pair of tweezers but the stapler pin and fine craft art did the job 😂
I pop the board to the Windows machine and I hear it beep. Flashed a working rom from here - https://www.station-drivers.com/ind...ntroller-firmware-Version-1.27.24/lang,en-gb/
and I was back in business.

Thank you so much for sharing. It did save my day (well, a couple weeks)!!
