Man I was really looking forward to getting this iPAQ. I went to my local RS when this deal started and the manager ordered a couple (for me and another customer) from another store. I just called again and now he says they all dissapeared. Oh well I never expected this to come through anyways.

Since the iPAQ 3635 has been discontinued for a bit now.. it seems unlikely to find that many good deals on them anymore since they're so hard to find

i just returned my first ipaq which refused to boot up even though it was factory sealed ....
as a replacement the manager found another one somewhere in dallas ...

however ... he wasnt willing to give me any discounts on it at all touting the fact that it had been unused ....

the box was ripped, the ipaq itself had definitely been switched on, it had software missing, and everything was without the factory wrappings ..

all he would do was extend the warranty to 2 years (which in my opinion is a lousy sales gimmick anyway ... they always find something to make you pay for repairs)

so i returned it and got my money back .... oh well ... no ipaq for me ..... time to get a newer one i suppose ....

if anybody wants to take a shot at it ... pm me or something and i'll let you know which store i was at ....

oh my goodness, I spent a half-hour while a sales person from Sears tried to price match their 'sale' price of $550 to the $350. In the end the manager cleared it after calling the RS twice [BTW, the H3635 and the 3635 ARE the same model for you sales rep's out there...] and finally sold them to me... these rebates arent limited to one per address are they? Cause I picked up two

If you live in central florida there is one store that has 2 display models up for sale, use them to pricematch a local Sears or Staples. It is 321-724-1263. I wouldn't pick up either from the store, as both are missing the cf sleeve, and one is missing ALL the software practically and the expandable case (though they wont tell you on the phone when pricematching) Good luck!

If you guys get the extended warrantee with RS and your iPAQ breaks after a while, any chance they'll just give you one of the newer models as a replacement?

Did you slide the hard reset switch (located behind the sliding door on the bottom left of the unit) to the on position before trying to use it ? Last month I went to Staples to PM a 3635 when the $150 rebate was first offered, but the manager said all they had was a bunch of bad units that would not powen-on. I asked him if I could look at one because I had an idea out what was wrong with them. I went through a dozen or so iPAQs of the "bad units" that were returned as DOA and all worked fine once you followed the instructions and turned on the switch. LOL

PocketNES is useless on the 3635 because it has a limitation of only being able to use 1 button at at time. ie you can't move & shoot at the same time. VERY hard to play NES games with this limitation. Tecmo Bowl? Can't select plays PERIOD. You have to exit the game...

yeah ... i did switch it on .... thats the first thing i did ....
that is pretty funny tho ...

the thing is ... this 3635 would power on ... it wouldnt boot up tho ... all i could see were these wierd gray vertical lines ????
and i couldnt hook it up to my pc .... windows would complain about not being able to recognize it ....
so i couldnt do anything to fix it ...

purpledemon - Someone f@cked it up flashing the ROM. They probably attempted to load a bootleg version of PC2002 and it stopped mid-update so they returned it. The grey vertical lines are definite sign that the ROM was in upgrade mode. If you still had the unit, you could press the soft reset (the one through the pin-hole on the right) while pressing the on button and it would have displayed the upgrade error message.

BTW - you can remove the iPaq viathe bottom flap on the box (the one with the serial /UPC/Part number label) without breaking the Compaq secutiry seal.

<< Ok. An upper and a downer...
Downer: Not to pee pee on everyone's parade, but I think I am going to sell my 3635, not to cash in, but because I don't like it nearly as much as my plain-old Palm V. Yes -- color and MP3 and MPEG and voice recording and handwriting recognition is awesome, but in terms of the BASICS... the reasons I have a PDA in the first place -- mainly to be calendar and contact list -- the thing is so friggin' awkward and poorly thought out, it's unbelievable! I'm going to give it another day or so, but it's just too much of a pain in the butt to do what I need to do most.

Yes, I have to agree there. I couldn't resist this deal and it gives me a chance to directly compare the PPC to my Palm (sony clie 710c). this winCE 3.0 is SO FREAKING CLUMSY it's not even funny. It DOES do some very impressive things like movie trailers in divx at 30fps with full sound, quake, simcity2000, pocketNES/SNES, but the everyday task/calendar stuff is SO much easier on a palm. And my clie has mp3 support with headphones included and a remote so you don't have to take it out of your pocket to change songs. I don't know if I'm going to keep this ipaq...
the start menu is just horrible. i sure hope ppc 2002 is VASTLY improved. who cares if you have this powerful ppc if you can't do the simplest things as effiently as the competition

Gotta agree. My IIIxe is the most useful PDA I've ever had, regarding efficiency and ease of use. I ordered this ipaq mainly for my fiance so she can play games in color, listen to mp3s or read a book whenever she wants. The ipaq is more of a geek device and a fun toy rather than a tool.

Still, I love these things :)

I just called around to a few different radio shacks and they all said that they don't discount the open box IPAQ's 20% and they also all said no to the 10% off with credit card. Usually a clerk would answer at each store and say yes to both discounts but then he would double check with the manager, come back, and then say no. Sounds like the managers received a memo or something about these but the clerks don't know anything about. Maybe try and buy it when the manager is at lunch?

Here is an interesting article for those of you bugging out on differences between Palm OS and PocketPC.
Gadgeteer Article

It describes Gadgeteers reasons for going back to using a Palm after getting an iPAQ 3600. Old article but still pretty relevent..except for lack of PocketPC software.

I used a Visor Deluxe which has DateBook Plus (even more advanced then the standard Palm Datebook app) built in and also find the PocketPC Calendar a real dissapointment. My Visor fit just fine in my front pocket with its screen protector on while this iPAQ with its sleeve is a brick - way too big for my pockets.
However, the iPAQ color is very nice and makes reading the screen much easier then the Visor and the iPAQ backlight is actually useable. The color screen is the reason I keep this unit. B.T.W.. I did try the 3135 black and white iPAQ..and I felt it's screen was harder to read then my Visor so it went right back.

workingbee:

My sears pm a 3635 for me but they were out, so they sold me the unit in another store. When I got there, there was no 3635. They made a mistake and they gave me the 3765 instead. This goes for $499, so $349 is a good deal. However, there is no rebate, so that's my final cost. What's the difference between the two? Should I keep it?

I got 2 3635s (very lucky, very nice, took a little work and a little driving when I finally found them). But I need the extra installed memory for some wireless imaging applications, so I'd trade my 3635 for your 3765 if you would rather have the 3635. The difference is $100 and a compactflash adapter($49) after both rebates ($150 for 3635, $50 for 3765). Email me: link if you are interested.
Otherwise, I'm going for the 64Mb self upgrade.

CHECK YOUR LOCAL COMPUSA STORES

Another rumor has it that they've marked remaining 3635's down to $299.99. $150 AR.

Good luck.

radioshack finally updated their website showing the $349.99 price now... I was able to use it to pricematch it with my local staples that still has 2 more 3635 left....I got the $49.99 2yrs extended service plan with mine after the saleperson agreed to let me use the 40$ off coupon with my purchase, hope he doesnt lose his job over this. The service plan is really an accessory kit which includes the 2yrs warranty including covering the screen, a carrying case, some screen protective overlays, 2 full length stylus pens, cleaning wipes, and some magazine trail subscription, not bad for 10$.

as martha stewart says, this would be a very good thing.

Don't see why they wouldn't, as long as they're new, boxed units. Compaq has no exceptions to the promo listed on their site. I never really understood that whole thing with Compu-America, though, so maybe someone can shed some light.

Just finished visiting four Radio Shacks. None to be found. I spoke to two managers from different stores(and states), apparently they received a fax memo from Radio Shack that the warehouses/distribution centers would not be getting anymore shipments in from Compaq. The memo was dated 18:30 12/6. The manager's at two stores showed me the memo. They also said that an individual had placed a purchase order aquisition for all remaining Ipaq 3635's that are remaining at all stores and distribution centers for the ENTIRE country. They said an individual had walked into a Sterling VA Radio Shack store and agreed to pay for all remaining stock! Supposedly according to two different managers this individual payed a certain percentage up front. I haven't spoken to the Sterling store to verify this to be fact or crap. The stores I visited were at least 60 miles away from the store mentioned. Now to see if Staples will price match the Radio Shack website price with no stock at any stores.........
