Ok so I did benchmark and it was 260mbps ,, then another time you do it it gives 243mbps and its stuck on that until you reboot.

My comp has been on for few days , I go to benchmark expecting either 260mbps or 243mbps ,,,,,,,,, to my surprise its 130mbps, I ran the test multiple times with same results.

I just rebooted let me see what it is.

Ok now Im getting 238mbps ,,,,,,,, should be 260mbps....... a bit later I benched again,, its at 260mbps :0

TRIM active?

More importantly, do you actually notice a difference, or is it just benchmarking?

Because TRIM/Garbage collection works in the background and slightly affect performance.

Hey gurus thanks for the responses. What should I do ShintaiDK ? So disabling TRIM this wont happen again ?

Yes the drive has TRIM ,,,,,,,,,, I have no idea what it is haven't done anything special, Just tossed the SSD in there. Winblows7 did the rest. like,, disabling defrag for that , disabled superfetch and prefetch,, all off ,, automatically .......

Start > type cmd > right click and run as administrator > type "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" without quotes > if the answer is 0 TRIM is active

Wow I did it and it was 0 cmdredredd

So TRIM is active, If I disable TRIM "dont know how" would this problem go away.

How would I go about this thing cmdrdredd ?

Leave it go, quit benchmarking it. Everytime you copy something to it, run a benchmark etc. TRIM starts the garbage collecting process. Once its finished, it will go back to its original advertised speeds. Speed also can depend on how much you have stored on the SSD as well. The more you test it out, the more you will wear it out.

Very cool response Rvenger. Thanks my friend. So your saying I should just let that happen FYI: not too many writes, just reading.....

After a while ? It will go back up to 260mbps as soon as I reboot, So your saying dont reboot and eventually it will gain its speed back......let trim do its thing............

quit benchmarking it.

This. In fact there is some sticky  somewhere that states:

Do NOT endlessly run benchmarks on an SSD.

Basically using the SSD (and benchmarking is the same as "using it a LOT") causes performance to go down. Trim (after it does its magic) brings performance back up. Disabling Trim (if you were to somehow do that) would just ensure your performance does NOT come back up as fast.

Maybe I should create a new simplified sticky like this?

How to use an SSD

1) Pretend it is a hard drive.

2) Install fresh copy of Windows 7 on it.

3) Do NOT benchmark or "optimize" anything.

4) Enjoy.

We still see too many posts of:

"But don't I have to optimize it?"

"Why is it slower than what the reviewer got?"

"I don't understand how I'm supposed to install it."

It infuriates me to the point of wanting to set fire to things that people use forums as a substitute for their own research.

I read the manual, read the article(s), read local users experience in forums and then go. No coincidence that I get 5% of the problems other people get.

Ditto on doing the research and the 5%.

We have to accept the fact that some of us lack of the skills and experience
to do their own research. They may not know what to look for and where to look. Even if they did, they may not be able to gather the info and utilise them. More, they may not be able to extract what they need.
Not all of us have academically qualified to do that.

At that point where the forums play their roles.
Exchanging ideas, info, knowledge and experiences.
I have personally gained a lot straight from just reading forums and get what I need.

So I disagree with you on this.

You know how when you were five and whenever you went into a store your mom would grab your hands and say "DON'T TOUCH" in a very stern voice to you?

This is exactly like that. You bought an SSD to use, not play with endlessly. So stop playing with it, and start using it.

And read up about TRIM. It's important.

The foundations of what I spoke about are two things, the ability to read, and be have patience. I am not academically qualified in IT and it is not even my profession. I started with a blank slate with SSDs like everyone when they came out and people grew their knowledge by spending many many hours reading Anand's original SSD articles. It's clear when somebody comes here who doesn't know the first thing about an SSD but wants to use one. There is no excuse at that stage for trying to research something yourself.

Example. In my VW Golf manual it states that if you disconnect the battery and reconnect it, the ABS light will not go off until you have drove over 15mph [I think was the figure]. I knew this because I read the manual when I bought the car.

My friend also has a Golf. He removed his battery. He installed a new battery. He then spent 2 hours trying to figure out why his ABS light would not go off.

You don't need any skills beyond simple reading and a willingness to learn information, instead of be given information.

See I've learnt one more useful info without reading the manual.
But I still don't understand why to drive over 15mph.

For your friends case, what are friends for :)

Again, some don't have the skills other than asking around.

But how many more useful things would you know if you did read the manual? I don't know either, I would assume that without sufficient speed the ABS system cannot run its checks.

I am more than happy to continue to help people, friends or people on a forum. Personally I think with more and more automation (I field I actually work in), computers taking thinking out of the equation, sat-navs etc.., intelligence in general is on the decline. If people have "lost the skills" required to read the manual which came with their product then it is a very sad state of affairs.

My friend, I have no intentions of jousting with you but computers speed up for reaching the info, knowledge and experience whatever you call it.
For me it takes away a lot of energy and effort to reach for the info out of the equation and get me doing other things freely. it frees my mind to think more innovative as well.
It is sometimes nice to go to libraries but sometimes you need that time and effort maybe to please your girlfriend :sneaky:

This is a really serious and deep discussion, the more you dig in the more it goes deeper so I just don't wanna go further, but I still think people should ask whatever even if it is the dumbest question.
Other people sometimes figure out what they knew was wrong, when one ask the dumbest question and one guru unselfishly answers them.

I don't know if it makes sense to you?

The discussion is not about computers speeding up reaching for information. Your interpretation of this is to simply ask somebody for the answer, whether it be a friend with the knowledge or asking somebody on a forum. There will come a time when you will not be able to ask for help and will have to stand on your own two feet.

I do agree that we should end this discussion now though as I don't think continuing it will achieve much.

This is the one thing in y'all's discussion that I find to be nothing more than a complete cop out for utter laziness.

If one cannot read and comprehend the English language, I can concede that that may be a hindrance to simply using some skills learned in grade and high school, using the damned ability to read.

Sure, you can be that guy that comes over and asks anything about anything instead of trying, just once, to find out for himself, esp. in this day and age of the internet. But then you run the risk of becoming "that guy" that everyone dreads seeing coming up the driveway, forum, wherever.

Maybe I'd let you slide with the "just asking" guy routine 40 years ago, but not today.

I have never been "that guy" trust me on this.
If you knew me well in reality, you wouldn't even dare to ask me some sort.
Either you guys take the forums too serious or you make dwell out of them.
Anyway, not my problem. I don't have time to post thousands of messages and claim all worthy.
