stock for stock an srt-4 neon version won't take a gto but they are so easily moddable that a little money goes a long way. biggest issue is obviously traction. oh and when you get beat by a "cheaper" car, do you roll down your window next to them and say well hey at least i don't have a civic or a neon or something like that? kinda stupid if you ask me. if you get beat, you get beat.

dude, I've said it before. I hate Neons. But I love yours 🙂 Good stuff.

The SRT4 is heavily underrated. Actual power figures are at 215-225whp and 220-240wtq. FWD also has less drivetrain loss, but all that shouldn't change the outcome.

QFT, I saw a dyno of a stock one that was putting 245HP and 275LBft to the wheels. I don't know if that was a factory freak or what, but it was just silly to call it 230HP.

Oh and to the OP, me and my friend are restoring a 64 rambler. Just throwing that out there.

Nice! Is it an American, Classic or an Ambassador? Straight six 232?

Anybody ever take their car to the drag strip? I'm just curious about what I would need to do it. I'm pretty sure I've read they require you to wear a helmet. And if you go faster than 13 seconds you need a roll cage too maybe. Probably cost a good chunk of change too.

Yeah. I took my car ('04 Saturn Ion 1) to the local 1/8th mile drag strip (Brainerd Optimist) to benchmark it at a Sunday afternoon Test&Tune session not too long ago. It was pretty funny. We tested in pairs, and I squared off against some boxy purple monstrosity covered in aftermarket parts stickers. Wish I had a pic of it.

The rearview window said something about momma not being late to pick up the kids from school. I gather that it was the car of some hotrodder's wife.

I still don't know what the car was, but it looked suspiciously like a mid-80s Chrysler 5th Avenue.

The results:

My car was #12:

My launch was pretty bad, and I did not handle the automatic quite right (I launched in L which keeps it in 1st gear up to 6500 rpm, but it really shouldn't stay there past 5500), but I won so that's the important thing!

As far as safety was concerned, they required a helmet if you could run an 1/8th mile in something like 8.64 seconds or less. Obviously I was not in need of a helmet.

Overall it was fun. All the other cars there were . . . quite a bit more powerful than mine. Suped up Mustangs, an old Nova, and some other craziness. It was 100% American muscle. In fact, every vehicle there was American. There was a $20 entry fee for as many runs as they had time to let you run. I only did one due to time constraints.

I had a neon beat me in a 30-100mph roll on once. I was on my R6, I couldn't belive it. Then again, i found out he runs low 11s so I didn't feel too bad.

From a roll a Stock SRT4 will give a GTO a run for it's money no problem, has nothing to do with the driver.

If you run to the GTO's 160mph limiter, no, they wont. Ask me how I know.

Also, if you want to go to the track, all you'll need is a helmet. Roll cages are for 11.49 or faster in a coupe IIRC.

Yeah, I've tried to establish that over and over in this thread, but nobody is listening.

Neon vs. GTO in a typical 0-60 or 5-60 run : very close
Neon vs. GTO in 60+ territory : not very close at all

IN the context of the OP yes it will, that's all we have been talking about here.

Never did I or anyone else say that the SRT4 is faster or that it will keep up with the GTO at triple digit speeds.

Are we done answering questions that no one has asked yet?

American with just a simple 232. We wanna take it to some car shows and such. Don't want to make it a screamer or anything. Just a cruiser. It's been a really slow project. We've been working on it for years.

Nice. Sounds like my 66 Classic. I was working on it all the time during the summers when I was in college, but since I've started working and moved out from my parents place I've put it into storage and haven't done much with it. I can do a little work on it there in the storage garage as long as I don't need any power tools and off and on I go and do a little bit. I really need a house and my own garage to finish the work on it though.

My 66 had the 232 before I swapped it out for the 287 V8. That straight 6 motor is bullet proof though. If the 287 ever kicks it in mine I'll probably go find another 232. Let me know if you need help finding parts or anything. I know of a bunch that I've found and used online.
