Sports: Explain to me the use of "we" in reference to your team with poll

How do you refer to sports teams?

  • Yes I use "We" and other type of terms

  • No, that's stupid, I'm not on the team or a part of it.

Why do people do this? It's so aggravating.

"We are going to beat you guys this week" Well you aren't playing, YOU aren't doing anything, YOU will be watching the game on TV or in the stands.

Maybe the greenbay packers fans can say this IF they are a shareholder. Anybody else is just a fan and needs to shut up with the use of "WE" with sports teams.

I semi agree.

Without the fans, the team wouldn't exist.
The fan base is the reason the team was started and the only way they get cash to continue the organization.
When attendance drops for an extended period of time, the team moves or disbands.

IMO, if you have contributed financially, you can say "we". (tickets, merchandise, etc)

Edit: Do you say "we" when referring to the United States? Did you fight any wars that gave the United States independence?
All you did was pay taxes... which is similar to buying sports tickets and merchandise.

Good points, but I think when it comes to gameday, it really is completely up to the players on the field, court, rink, etc.

If you buy tickets to a golf tournament, or buy Tiger Woods branded equipment, can you honestly say "we"? It's the same principle, but people confuse it when it comes to team sports.

I think sports teams are different than governments. But for what its worth, I do refer to government and politicians as "them" because they are a parasitic institution only interested in their own ends.

I think you aggravate easy, and also aren't a true fan of any team or you wouldn't be making such a big deal out of such a small thing.

should probably help yourself find better things to be annoyed by......you seem like you would be really annoying to be around.

Only people who know I feel this way is you guys on the forum or people who also feel that way. I keep thoughts like this to myself for that reason obviously.

edit: You might be annoying to be around to, belittling every person's complaints and calling them unworthy. Who are you to judge? That's really annoying, I might make a thread on that too.

Do you say 'we' when referring to the United States participating in a sporting event?

Even when its a team sport? You're just an idiot grasping at straws to support an argument you know deep down is quite stupid

I want to know his opinion on my case, in which i do have some owner ship into "my" team?

That's fine, I couldn't care less what he thinks. Its already been made clear to me, thinking isn't something he's very good at :p

My situation is similar to yours. As a season ticket holder I've paid for that team as much as anyone else, and as a tax payer of the city I've paid for the stadium they play in too. Our situations are mostly the same.

I don't like it. I am certain I've done it in the past, however, for simplicity of comprehension, inadvertently. It requires less syllables than fully naming the team and saying "they" could lead to confusion in some scenarios. Thus, I bet I've said it even though I dislike the usage.

At least it's better than the Timothy Zahn style wherein we'd say "The Packers" or "they" when talking about one team and "the other" to refer to whatever other team or teams are involved in the conversation.

I'd sooner say Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, etc. I haven't contributed shit to them. I'm belittling the enormous amount of effort by trying to include myself with them.

Just because you own a Mac do you say "we had our IP lawsuit thrown out against Samsung, dammit!". No maybe you would say that if you were an employee though, or a stockholder.

Edit: You're a bigger idiot trying to rationalize a stupid quirk you have with regards to sports teams, not my fault you're a hopeless homer.

So you would rattle off the whole "dream team 2012" when referencing them? Did you see that we beat Spain would become, did you see US beat Spain? Thats fine, but you're the one with the quirk. I guarantee everyone else would be saying we as a fan of the sport of basketball and the tournament that is the olympics. And nobody in their right mind would look at them funny for doing so.

And now that I think about it, it would definitely be more weird to hear "Did you see the US beat spain?" As opposed to using "we"

I said "I'd sooner" say each name than say "we".

Btw, the poll is 50/50, so to say you guarantee is definitely a little strong and definitely quirkish. I simply asked the question and asked how people felt about it while also stating how I feel.

edit: as I posted its now 10/9 we vs not we.
