Why not just buy a regular Evo and strip it down yourself when you go to the track? At least when you aren't on the track you can put the creature comforts back in.

it comes with a better diff than the regular Evo. What people do is get an RS with the Urban Jungle package which puts your so called "creature comforts" back in. 🙂

I guess we can add the 350z to this discussion, but the Evo and the STi (from seeing them at the track) smoke the 350z all day long, stock vs stock.

The STi is also like a jet with 4 wheels. Not very refined, perhaps a little more than the Evo though, but quick as hell.

Funny, the STi/Evo is only slightly slower than the C5 but half the cost and people are saying the C5 is the best bang for the buck? I don't think so. An extra $20k will get you what? A 1/2 second and a fewe mph in the 1/4 mile? Leather interior? That's pretty much it.

umm...were also talking about total performance, not just the 1/4. the 1/4 mile of a car does not and should not, imo, determine whether a car is better than another. I would take a corvette on road atlanta or infineon raceway [sears point] or laguna seca or willow springs over an STi or Evo any day.

Well, it's funny you mention that because the STi corners and brakes as well as a C5 Vette does if not better.

Ford GT. Sure it's expensive, but it beats the crap out of nearly every other car on the market. I know a lot of you will disagree becuase it costs 4x an STI or evo, but for that money you get one of the fastest cars made.

i think a vette beats the ford gt in almost every category

STi is comparable to the current C5 vette, i'll agree. I await to see how it will hold up to the Z51 C6 vette.

since you said that the STi brakes and corners as well as the C5 vette (which one, base, annevesary, z51 or z06?), please post or link to some numbers to back it up.

Depends on the price category, and if you're talking stock or modified.

~30k: EVO or STi
~40-50k: Corvette
~80k: Viper

first you say a vette can beat Stang, then an M3, then a McLaren F1, and now a GT?
are you really that stupid or you just pretending to be so you get some much-needed attention? oh wait, the latter case is equally stupid too.

A C6 is about 43.500k retail, and $38,000 invoice. It does 0-60 in roughly 4.2 seconds and the 1/4 in about 12.5 @ 115mph.

On top of performance you get leather, power seats, HID's, and a targa roof which is cool if you want something open topped but don't want a full blown convertible. It's a far cry from $20,000 more. Hell closer to $10,000.

i think the lotus elise has to be included too.... its base is under 40,000, and it beats the mitsubishi evo, and the subaru:

Lotus Elise (stats from motortrend)
Price $39,985
Engine 1.8-liter inline-4
Horsepower 190 bhp @ 7800 rpm
Torque 138 lb-ft @ 6800 rpm
Weight 1950 lb
Power-to-weight 1 hp : 10.3 lb
0?60 mph 4.7
1/4 mile 13.4 @ 101.4 mph
Slalom 71.1 mph
Skidpad 0.98g

JEEBUS! Why not HIGHLIGHT the Skidpad number??? That's where the Elise's magic is!!!

There's also the Noble M400:

Noble M400
Price ~$85k
Engine 3.0-Liter V6
Horsepower 425 bhp @ 6500 rpm
Torque 390 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm
Weight 2337 lb
Power-to-weight 1 hp : <5.5 lb
0?60 mph 3.5
0-100 mph 8.0

1/4 mile 11.0
Skidpad >1.156g

Faster than a Ford GT up to about 120mph, and much higher grip levels too. Though, to be fair, it runs on Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires, which are really grippy.

hyunai tiberon

😀 kidding 😛

although i heard some people claim that it's the fastest under 18-20k .. 😕

<--- not a car person really..

if you're only interested in straight line speed, a vette is a good choice. If you're going to be doing any twisties, a vette or stang will leave you planted in a ditch or something. Pick up a WRX STI or Lancer Evo.

Wow, you really dont know jack crap about Corvettes, huh?

he obviously doesnt.

We just gotta wait until the Stig on top gear drives the new corvette around the track.

He did last week if I am not mistaken.

Edit: my choice would be the lotus elise.

If we're including used cars, 85-90 Corvettes are hard to beat. The Z51 option package will make it handle very well and the L98 engine puts out a respectable 250HP and 350ft/lb of tq. Considering that this generation (The earlier, boxy one) of C4 can be had in good condition for sub $10k makes it a very hard-to-beat deal.

If you want a monster, $10k in work should put you at the 12 second mark. Not too shabby for $20k. All motor too.

New = SRT-4, Corvette C6

Used - TransAm/Z28, Corvette C5 Z06

Overall best bang for buck, no questions asked = Trans Am/Z28, you can find plenty of 93-97s with the LT1 engine (Around 260hp to the wheels) for cheap! 5K can get you a 93/94. You might be able to find a 98 with the LS1 engine (around 300 to the wheels) for less than 10k.
