You get what you pay for.

It's funny almost all the complaints you hear about airlines is someone bitching about Spirit and their $100 ticket.

I had someone unfriend be from Facebook because I explained that missing a flight and not having insurance = lost air fare. They insisted insurance should only be for something out of their control and it was not their fault they woke up sick that day and missed their flight. They wanted to start a boycott against Spirit since they don't care about human life.

Their profitability is not my problem, and they don't charge me fees for checked baggage.

We flew them to San Diego last year for comicon. Definitely not doing that again. Baggage fees almost added up to another ticket.
 
Pretty sure this was the airline whose CEO said a year or two ago that he didn't give two shits about customer complaints because his airline is the cheapest. "If they want service, they should go somewhere else and pay more" was the mantra. I seem to recall it coming up because someone wanted to refund their ticket because they became terminally ill or something, and the airline to him/her to pound sand.

I would argue that they are making it your problem given the changes to their FF program, the cutting of routes, cutting employees, second only to Spirit in terms of terrible customer satisfaction ratings, worse on time arrival rating than US, AA, DL, terrible baggage handling ratings, accounting for 25% of all DOT airline complaints, worst reliability rating of in air-wifi...well you get the idea 🙂
 
I'm more afraid of them loosing my luggage and not having any of my summer clothes at all. Last time I flew with them it took forever for my bag to come down the belt.

Haven't had to deal with any of that. When that happens, I'll switch to Delta 😉

Until then, I'll enjoy my lounge access / stress free ticketing / free checked bags / etc.

I'd fly on INTL carriers only if I had the choice ^_^
 
I know their business model is lowest base fare then charge for everything else, and frankly I'm surprised you were able to talk to them on the phone for free.

I can't prove you wrong, but I CAN say that I've never had a large issue with southwest. I also have nothing non-American to compare it to, so I'll just be happy in my ignorance.
 
I have flown them multiple times and not had a problem. Great deal if you are just going to visit family or friends for the weekend and can manage with just a backpack or small carry on.

I wouldn't go that far...many of the 'foreign' airlines are actually just re-branded American names.

JAL and the like are very good though. The ticket prices reflect that though.

I have found airfare to be a definite 'you get what you pay for' though.

What's a crime is how much business class and better has gone up on oversea travel. What used to be a 4x-5x proposition to upgrade can be 10x or more now.

That said, some first class and business class stuff is much better than in the past.
 
Try flying United some time.

A couple weeks ago I had to fly out to New Hampshire from Michigan. They connected through O'hare, then Newark, then Manchester. But Newark is doing construction on one of their runways and cancelled a bunch of flights.

I thought the United lady was being helpful when she said she could get me to Boston and shuttle me from Boston to Manchester via ground. Imagine my surprise when we landed in Boston: the shuttle cost over $100! Might have been nice if she told me that in advance, don't you think? I called United and asked for recompense, and they told me that it was an air-traffic control decision and not a United decision, so their policy was not to compensate anything. Nice.

Got in 6 hours late, cussing United all the way. Little did I know that the flight back would be an order of magnitude worse.

Waiting in Manchester for my flight, I got a call from United. Their flights our of O'hare were running behind, so I was going to miss my connection to Michigan. Again, an air-traffic problem was to blame, so she said I had to get my own hotel room. When I got to O'hare that night, they told me that they had one more plane to Michigan. So I waited. And waited. The flight time got pushed back one hour. Then two. Then three. Then, at 11 PM at night United came on and told us all that the flight was cancelled because of mechanical problems, and the co-pilot had 'timed out'.

They actually agreed to put us all up a hotel since this time it was 'their fault'. So what did they do? They put all of us on the flight, some 60 people, into the same fucking hotel that was over 20 minutes away. The shuttle held a grand total of 10 people.

So we all arrived at the shuttle area at midnight, knowing full well that the shuttle rides would be going on for FOUR HOURS to get us all to the hotel. Some people had to be back at 3 AM as the only flight they could get on was leaving at that time. I made it home the next day at 4 PM, only 19 hours late, and made it to my son's graduation with actually 45 minutes to spare.

I've flown North West and Delta and never had anything remotely like this happen - and when we WERE inconvenienced on those flights we were compensated. United absolutely sucks.

I have a couple United stories like that. The most "on time" they've ever delivered me anywhere is three hours late. Their employees have dispositions you usually find at such customer friendly places like the DMV or your local cable office. I'll fly Southwest long before I sit my ass on any more United metal.

Do you fly much? Three hours late at best for many flights is like winning the lottery.
 
Thats horrible. Every airline is becoming shit compared to southwest though. No extra fees and 2 50lb bags.
