Spirit Airlines can suck it

dabuddha

Lifer
Piece of shit Spirit Airlines has officially moved to the top of my shit list. So much bullshit and time wastage.

First, they added a $2 additional fee per baggage. I couldn't figure out why and it's complete hell trying to get a hold of a human via their 800#. Eventually found out they charge $2 extra per baggage during the summer months (she directed me to their baggage fee page and it has a blurb about the additional fee).

22 minutes wasted

Then, when checking out, it gave me the option to join their $9 fare club for $19.95 (3 month trial membership). Would lower the checkin baggage fee by $22 by doing so. So I select the option and check out. It didn't discount the baggage fees. Called them on their 800# again and eventually got a hold of a human who told me the terms and conditions say that the discount only applies to future bookings (wtf!). No where on the checkout page does it say so. I told the CSR I wanted the charge removed and to un-sign me from their $9 fare club. She told me sure and told me she'd transfer me to the fare club (before I could stop her). Back to the god damn fucking phone tree which got me no where.

25 minutes wasted

I then called back again, got a hold of someone in website support (only place in the fucking phone tree I could find a human) and told him what I needed. He said he'd transfer me but I stopped him before he did so and told him I want to speak to a human and not to a computer. He said he'd make sure I got a human and put me on hold for 25 minutes. Eventually got another human and that human said he'd refund my money and remove me from the fare club. I then told him a good suggestion for their web team is to provide a small blurb under the check box stating that the trial membership will apply towards future travel only and not the current trip. He laughed and said sure and hung up :| I was practically seeing red at this point.

34 minutes wasted

total of 81 minutes wasted dealing with their shit. I kinda know what I was getting into when booking the ticket but had to fly spirit since the wife and kids will be on the same flight. But fuck those cocksmokers. Will never fly with them again.

/rant
sigh

Yeah I learned this lesson a recent trip to Vegas. Friends were going and didn't want to spend a ton on flights we booked the cheapest flight we found. They just simply suck.

anyone who uses spirit airline clearly has never done research on them. and anyone who uses them once usually doesn't use them again.

Yea I think to check my bag in I will have to pay $47. My brother flew us airways and his baggage check in was only $25. My buddy bought me the ticket so I can't do much. I'll be flying with them in a month or so. They do suck pretty badly.

So in others words, you found the cheapest airfares available, and are upset because you didn't know that with a lower price comes a reduced level of service?

I never sign up anyway for all their clubs and advertisments. When I first flew with them I didn't think it was that bad. I had a window seat, and no one sat next to me. The only part that sucked was the fee to check in one bag but that is all I had on me.

I guess this is why Spirit's ratings are so high. It still biggles the mind that so many people flock to use them. I guess many are willing to put up with a lot of crap just for "lower" airfares ...

And then there is the fees for carrying on luggage. I hate being nickeled-and-dimed - I'll never fly on Spirit.

Sometimes considering their tickets are $50-80 less than the other airlines most people don't care. I stuff everything in one bag and check it in. If I would have to pay for my ticket this time I would not choose them but I didn't pay for it so can't complain.

In my case, every time I've looked, Spirit was marginally cheaper than other carriers, and fees I would end up having to pay would eat up all of that meager savings.

people want the a la carte model of spirit air.

not you of course, because you think it's nickel and diming. But to everyone else that knows what Spirit is.

It would take all but 5 seconds to google ”spirit airline” and never use it, yet you didn't. Why?

Like I said, I don't mind the nickel and diming business model they use. I don't like the deceptive nature of their website.

If it clearly stated that the $20 membership only applies towards future travel, I would never have checked it. Combine that with how hard it is to get a human on the phone. Their phone tree is extensive and non of the usual shortcuts work on getting a human. I know they do it on purpose so that most people give up and just eat the cost.

I'm paying $64 round trip for my 1 suitcase and even with that it's about $30-40 cheaper than the next cheapest airline. Plus the fact I'll be able to fly with the family on the return trip and help the wife with the kids (flying with 3 kids with one of them being a 2 year old is never fun 😀)

Wife booked her ticket about 3 weeks ago and the total cost for her and the 3 kids was almost $360 less than the next cheapest airline. I knew the airline was shitty before (have had friends fly with them) but I just don't have money to burn. As for my ticket, I thought about taking Southwest (which was about $30-40 more than Spirit after including the Spirit baggage fee) but for my wife's sake, I opted to fly with her to help with the kids.

Last year on consumerist, Spirit was voted second worst company in America, just behind Comcast. Now that is saying something.
Went to Tampa from Canada with 3 buddies for a 1 week golf trip last year. My buddies booked spirit for cheap. I said no fucking way and booked Westjet. I would get there an hour ahead of them so I would pick up the rental car and meet them at the Spirit Terminal.
Of course the cheap flight required them to drive across the border from London, Ont. to Detroit. 2 hours. When they got there they were told the flight was cancelled. they had to get a Hotel for the night and pay for a United flight in the AM. Lost a day of the short holiday and it ended up costing them $100 more each than I paid for my flight direct from the local Airport.
I fucking drove around in circles at the terminal pickup area for 2 hours (no one would let me stop and run inside) until I parked 1/2 mile away and walked to the Spirit arrivals and got on a phone where they told me the flight was cancelled. I was not pleased with their choice either.

why didnt your friends call you?

I had a flight from Chicago to New York on Spirit and didn't have any issues. Booked through Expedia. Had a rolling carry on and a backpack. No issues.

I'm fairly laid back but I have one definitive rule that my secretary is well aware of - if she books me on Spirit, she can start looking for another job.
