Both are about the same speed, which benchmark you use decides which is faster really. Samsung is definitely quieter than the 1TB Black in my brothers machine

If warranty is a issue, the black has 5yr, and sammy has 3yr.

I got them both, and no real issues with both.

No real speed difference, and not much of a sound difference. I use HD dampers though.

You can get the Black for $102 shipped if they're still the same price at Tiger Direct. They are $110 plus $2 budget shipping. Use the 10% Live Search cashback for the lower price.

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to decide between getting two Caviar Blacks or dropping in a second Spinpoint, and the difference in noise is a major consideration for me since they trade blows in the performance benchs.

Blacks are now out of stock .. sigh
What about the seagate 1.5tb for $106 ? Is that a good drive?
I can now get the spinpoint for $97 shipped.

Unless something has changed (which it may have), the 1.5tb drives suffer from a horrible early failure rate. I'd stick with a spinpoint

Alright, I got the two that I ordered. The shipping department at Tiger Direct does NOT know how to pack hard drives. Zero. That's how much padding they had. Zero. :| Nada. Zilch. What the holy fuck are they smokin' over there?

Didn't get a chance tonight, so tomorrow I'll test them out.

I just bought a Black but read up on guides and tests before buying..

The Black was said to be better for Appz and the Sea Gate was better for Data..

I did a search for my and got it at ProAdvantage.com
NE had free shipping but had to pay tax
PA had no tax and $10 shipping so it was same price almost..

The SpinPoint they just said was fine/good but not a winner like the two above which where tied..

How did they ship them? Just 2 bare HDs in a box, and that is it?:disgust:

The OEM drives were in the original anti-static bags. Apparently TD repackages them into a retail-like state... a blister pack (think SeaShell only without the extrusions and sealed so you can't open it). These were just packed in a small box with the packing slip under it and some wadded packing paper on TOP of the drives.

I got WD Diag on a bootable flash drive and will probably run it overnight on the first drive. I also got some pics of how it was packaged... maybe I'll find someplace to upload 'em.

That means it really doesn't matter which one you get.

I most times just read the last page first on all reports as I dont understand any of the Data..

So times I read between the lines but I when with WD becase of warranty.. I would much ratter have a drive not crash but I have had 3-4 since 95' that needed to be repaired..

Is there anyone that thinks they know who makes the "best"???
I have aways bought Maxtor till I switched last year to WD and also own a SeaGate with my Dell..

I've had a HD fail from almost every manufacturer.

Only exception is the Samsung, but that's just because they're a newer brand.

All my current PCs are using Samsung's(3 total) which are all great IMO, but its inevitable one will fail.

They're really cool, quiet, and maintain the speed of the other top drives.

okay.. Im just beating myself up here. I can decide spinpoint vs black. None of the benchmarks make any sense as they point to samsung being faster, quieter and cooler. Yet all recommend the black. So I keep going to pull the trigger and hesitate. I cant decide.

If they don't make sense, then don't follow their recommendation. Follow the data

Well. I broke down. Dell had the black for $100 shipped. The spinpoint for $98 shipped. So since the reviews say the black is the best right now I went with it. I hope I wont be sorry.

That's just plain stupid. They're all cutting costs right now, even the Egg has gone with a lower quality shipping box. I recently got memory from them shipped in a flimsy non-padded mailer envelope, was pretty pissed to see that..

I first encountered Samsung branded drives when they released a really cheap 560MB model which was 20MB more and a couple bucks cheaper than other brands. That was... many moons ago. They only seem new to people who just "discovered" them after they released their excellent Spinpoint F1 drives. ;)

It's not just the quality of shipping materials, but the complete lack of anything to pad them.

First drive passed WDDIAG5 full pass. Second drive was running it when I left for work. So far so good.

Okay now that I have gone and ordered the drive for my home system someone explain the data to me. It does appear the samsung is faster, quieter and cooler. So why does everyone recommend the WD black?
