What is this? A p!ssing contest?? Lame

Bar none - ATOC was a FAR superior movie than Spiderman. Is that now what a movie is really about? Who cares who makes more money. I know everyone i've talked to thought spiderman was "a good movie" but thought that Star Wars was "awesome/amazing".

I know you guys wanna make a point and act like spiderman was all of that, but simply put, it wasnt that spectacular as it's made out to be. The plot wasn't that great and there wasn't much action at all. It was good overall and entertaining, but still a bit lackluster.

I'm not a huge starwars fan and i'm not a comic book reader (atleast not since i was like 7). So i really don't care either way who wins. But Star Wars was still a better movie. Thats what it boils down to. I know the SW haters want to trash it with spiderman, but look at what really counts.

Wanna see who wins the merchandising war? :)

spidey won nothing...it just won the first couple of laps....in the end it will be far behind the master.

The master what?? Unless you can predict the future, your last statement means absolutely ZERO!! Who will win in the future is up in arms, but right now Spider-Man holds all the records.

do you people personally recieve prizes if your favorite movie makes more money than someone else's? does this crap really matter at all?

also, just because it's the highest grossing opening ever, that doesn't accurately compare it with past movies because of the insane inflation of movie tickets.

God has spoken I guess there's no reason to carry on this arguement

So because you feel Spiderman sucked that makes it so?

You just defeated your own point.

Of course screens doesn't equal theatres, but if a 12 screen complex shows Spidey on 6 of them, and only has Star Wars on 2, then OBVIOUSLY Spidey will gross more at that THEATRE.

Screens makes all the difference. Both movies were always pretty much sold out their first few days, but if there are more seats in which to watch one, it will obviously make more money.

Ok we can play the "screens" game. Let's look at the opening weekends in the US

Spiderman 7,100 screens (Fri-Sun 21,300 screens) 114 million
AOTC 6,100 screens (Thurs-Sun 24,400 screens) 116 million

Who has the higher per screen average?

Well, it's more like 7500 screens for Spidey, and about 6000 for SW, but you only are showing a 2 million dollar difference.

I'd say EASILY Star Wars.

1500 screens, say each screen has 200 people. That's 300,000 more people seeing Spidey EACH SHOWING. Say 4 showings per screen per day. Thats 1.2 MILLION more viewers EACH DAY.
Even if they only paid 6 bucks per head (and I'm sure the avg. is more than that) that's over 7 MILLION dollars PER DAY from those 1500 extra screens.
And consider I went conservative on my figures....many screen rooms hold more than 200, and some may have more than 4 shows per day, too.

You're missing the point Pacfanweb

AOTC played on a whole lot more screens in 4 days than Spiderman played in 3 days

You notice how it is only the Spider-Man fanatics that have to start threads like this. Star Wars fanatics politely create their own threads talking about Star Wars while Spider-Man fanatics are always in this comparison game. "Oh look. I made more money in Week 1. I am the champion. Hey, everyone, look at me!"

What we need are some Titanic fans. After all, that movie is still the reigning champ. (Note: after 3 weeks, Titanic was nowhere close to Spider-Man now, or where AOTC will be after 3 weeks).

The only reason there aren't 43 AOTC threads is because at the very top of the OT forum is a thread titled "ATOT OFFICIAL STAR WARS EP 2 THREAD".
And believe me if AOTC had broken records you can bet your life we would never hear the end of it. SW fans are just as bad as Spiderman fans so don't give me this "We SW fans are above such stupid threads" crap

Dont know why Spider-Man was terrible

this is where a little punctuation would help.

1. You don't know why spiderman was terribe? (you don't know what made spiderman terrible.).

2. You don't know why, Spiderman was terrible. (your amazed spiderman did so well because it was a terrible movie).

wow, 8th grade english is actually useful. :)

7500 screens X 3 days is 22,500 screens, quadrupled for 4 showings per screen per day.

6000 screens X 4 days is 24,000 screens, also quadrupled.

If the real figures are 5800 for SW, and close to 8000 for Spiderman, it's a wash.

I see your point, and in theory, you could be correct, however, an apples-to-apples comparison can't be made because of a couple of other factors:
One, SW opened on Thursday. Not a prime movie viewing day.
Two, SW opened with a record-setting blockbuster (Spidey) still fresh in theatres. Spidey opened vs. Nobody.

<<AOTC played on a whole lot more screens in 4 days than Spiderman played in 3 days >>

Actually, after considering your point(which, you're right, I initially missed...hey, it's 1:45am) , I'd say the number of screens is pretty close. Without knowing the exact numbers, a per-screen dollar winner can't be determined.
I'll just say it's very close, for now. I'll also say that SW will pull away steadily from this point on.
I think sometime this week is time for me to see one or the other. :D

Platinum, I'm going to have to bust you on this one. YOUR? That's "You're".

Hey, if YOU'RE going to correct someone, YOU'D best be correct yourself. ;)

Edit: screw it, I'm done, going to bed. I may be right or wrong, but I am now too tired to care. Good night.

Uhhhh you're comparing two totally different weekend setups. Imagine if SW came out May 3rd and
Spiderman came out May 16th, you think Spiderman would have had it's huge opening ?

Spiderman had no competition, theatregoers were itching for a big movie, the biggest movie
when Spiderman was released had been Scorpion King. I'm not bashing Spiderman as it's
record for the second week especially probably won't be broken for awhile (I doubt
even Star wars will outdo it.) It has some very good legs but you can't even compare their opening
tallies simply because the situation was so different.

Maybe Spiderman costs much less to licence(per screen) than SW, so theatres allocated the same for each but Spidy gets more screens...

well i thought there were also less screens because lucas had high standards.. only the largest screens at theaters were allowed to show it supposedly i think.
