Spidey Takes the Gold

Didn't want to group this in with the huge EP2 thread. However it looks like ATOC got 116M in 4 days, while Spider-Man hit 114M in 3 days (although the last story stated Spidey hit 123M in 3 days).

So what do you guys think? I personally thought that ATOC would blow Spider-Man out at the BO, but who knew!;)

(oh, and this is about Spider-Man as well, so it's not a full EP2 thread, so please don't lock. ;))

How much did AOTC gross from thurs-sat? I think that'd be more of a fair comparison instead of the friday-sun gross which leaves out AOTCs opening day...

i don't know anyone that thought it would blow spidey away. lucas had to fight backlash from eps 1. spidey has massive pent up demand whereas starwars has had 4 movies out b4, a full rerelease of special editions of 4-6 etc.

As he said $116million Thrus-Sun, Spidey had $114million Fri-Sun. Why not make it fair say Spidey had $133million in 4 days(Fri-Mon) for its opening.

Spidey has 8 legs. It had the LARGEST 3rd week EVER. Had the largest 1st, 2nd, and 3rd weeks, Im betting it takes the largest 4th as well.

And like I said before Spidey had more per theater than AoTC.

And the 3rd week was against Star Wars... that's incredibly impressive.

It opened in 480 or so less theaters, that said, Spidey grossed more per theater for the Fri-Sun period,(32k+ compared to 27k+). They came in around the same for a four day period(Thurs-Sun for AoTC, and Fri-Mon for Spidey)

Lucas said that AOC wouldn't beat Spiday, largely due to Spiderman being in several thousand more theatres.

I don't see how it's a big deal one way or another. Both are hugely successful, and will make more money than their creators will ever need.

I guess the final proof will be in how much each one grosses after they are done in theatres.

Yeah, I was also going to just say that Spidey was shown at 1500 more theaters due to Lucas' strict requirements for theaters.

Oh well, I've seen Spidey once and SW 4 times. :)

George Lucas quote:

"do you hope that Attack of the Clones will even better that?"
George Lucas: "No, I'm sure we won't - they're in 8,000 theatres, we're going to be in less than 6,000 theatres so they have a distinct advantage"

Hollywood.com:

"HOLLYWOOD, May 15, 2002 -- Star Wars: Episode II--Attack of the Clones will be released on a mere 6,000 screens in a modest rollout, as compared to Spider-Man's bow on 7,500 screens two weeks ago, Variety reports. "

<<Per theater. Spidey STILL out grossed it.>>

Well no joke! We're talking SCREENS, not theatres. Spidey was on more SCREENS, not in more LOCATIONS, so that obviously means a lot of multi-screen places had Spiderman on a bunch of their screens.

Screens does not equal theaters. They track by theaters, not screens..

You just defeated your own point.

Of course screens doesn't equal theatres, but if a 12 screen complex shows Spidey on 6 of them, and only has Star Wars on 2, then OBVIOUSLY Spidey will gross more at that THEATRE.

Screens makes all the difference. Both movies were always pretty much sold out their first few days, but if there are more seats in which to watch one, it will obviously make more money.

Well if they would fill up more Spidey theatres, of course it will play on more screens. Theatres are about making money. They though, "Hey, Ep2 sucks big balls! Let's show Spidey on 6 screens and Ep2 on only 2. That way we make as much money as possible."

That's how it's really done. No discriminating here. Spidey was a proven thing already for two weeks. Ep2 had zero hype, unlike Ep1, so only geeks were excited about it.

guys guys guys why are u making such a big deal between star wars and spidey.....spiderman was a very good movie, frankly i enjoyed it...but types like u have been pissing me off lately...AOTC was a very good movie.....but please dont make comparisons between great ultra massive starwars universe and the freakin peasantry spidey man franchise which has no history at all.....starwars has a army of fans.....AOTC will obliterate the final total spidey makes....spidey will bomb everywhere else in the world in comparison to the "master movie" starwars....all i see is anti-starwars people jump onto the spidey bandwagon because it has box office number close to star wars.

do u morons want to know why spidey grossed so high the third week....not only because it was a good movie......but also because quite a few of the people who couldnt get to watch starwars watched spidey....because tickets were over. i have friends who did this...so it is quite valid.....

and also sissy spidey opened when there was absolutley no competition at all.....despite having all the anti-starwars and loser identity crisis spidey asskissing fans out there, starwars blew the box office and threw that spidey down from the sky.

so get a damn life!....star wars still RULEZ....

I'll bet right now that Star Wars wipes out Spidey's records from 2nd week on.

I don't mean to sound like some Star Wars fanatic. I'm not. I'm going to see both movies for sure. But it's ridiculous to think that Spidey beat SW for any reason other than number of screens, and that was regulated by George Lucas.

These records will be broken probably every other year anyway, as prices continue to rise.
