There is no sarcasm. In TriStar's case, it's an excuse for his/her mistake. See quote's, like in my post, clearly indicate sarcasm.

Great, but not top of the line. You could easily run $2,000 or more especially if you throw in a large LCD, etc. Even without one, you could still run a huge pricetax (7800GT, X2 4800, etc).

yeah 2k isnt all that much if you are buying a sweet LCD. a kickass computer could easily be 1400-1500 (dont forget you have to actually buy software, you cant just install a pirated copy of xp and claim you bought everything).

19" lcd wtf?! (1280x1024 resolution)

you spend all that $, and cheap out on the monitor?

Dell 2001f for $400 (after coupon) -> 1600x1200 resolution

bleeding edge computing = 40% cheaper 3months from now

thats why you should always buy 2 systems below bleeding edge = good bang for buck

Fry's specials = GREAT bang for buck

I ignorantly listened to the opinion of the wondrous spendthrifts around here, and custom built it. Last time I'll do that!

building it yourself is fun, but after a while... i realized that with coupons and the software, and the quietness of dell's, dell's are really best bang for the buck. maybe im just getting old.

why do you regret doing it yourself?!

for me:
Fry's cpu/mobo (semprom 2500) = $59
case $30
HD 120 gig $30
Mem 2 sticks of 256megs @ 4.99 each = $10

$129 total

oh.. already had a WinXP image. 10 min to load, and like 30 min to get all the updated drivers.

If you read the thread, you'd see the best anybody could put together at the time was:
  • Product total: $343.96
    Shipping & Handling: $ 18.82
    Total (Before tax): $362.78
At this point in time, Dell is offering complete systems, with PCI-E slots, operating system, free shipping AND 19" LCD for $500.00. A few weeks ago, they even threw in a free printer with that, and they're as quiet as a tomb. Fvck building 'em anymore!

I guess unless you need the top of the line stuff (nobody really does), you have a great point. I have built one system in 2 years but have bought 4 Dell's and slightly upgraded them when desired (new HD's, more mem, video cards, etc. when found in the Hot Deals or FW forums). Dells can be dirt cheap at times!

BFD, memory is cheap to add, and the extra HDD space is still not being used. Just plunked another $25.00 into it to quiet the stock HS/fan, and overall it's still not nearly as quiet as an HP or Dell. Nevermind the hassle of getting all the drivers located and installed correctly. Fun? Yeah, you bet.

yup definatly should have gone with a Dell. I recommend all older impatient people to go that route.

At least I'll take the time to troublshoot a problem back to the source. The "young geniuses" on this board have one pat answer to ALL problems: Reformat & reinstall. Brilliant and "patient", eh?
