Speeding ticket question

I got pulled over last night on my way home from a friends birthday thing. I don't know how fast I was going, and I didn't get a ticket then. The officer took my license to his car and was there for about 5 minutes, then came back and said "I am on my way to a b&e but I will be coming to your house tomorrow and you will be getting a ticket." Is this normal or something they can do? Doesn't he have to tell me how fast I was going? I was turning a corner, probably going at least 20 over the limit on the hwy and this car was coming up behind me really fast so I got into the right lane ( was in the left at the time ) and sped up out of the corner (didn't speed up because of the other car, sped up because it was a big corner so usually slow down for it), so I was probably around 30 over. I know its stupid, it was really dark out, I didn't realize it was a cop car, but thats just how I always drive. Does it seem strange to anyone else that he said he is coming to my house to write me a ticket at some point today? I told him that I wouldn't be there the whole day because I have to work and he said "I'll find you".

He didn't get my registration for the vehicle just my drivers license.

I agree, but I'm basing this on American laws and not Canada's, so who knows?

I"LL FIND YOU!!

On the way to a B&E and stopped to give a piddly ticket to someone driving fast, but not threatening anyone else's life at the time... weak

I thought that at first then thought, he probably took the license and went back to the computer and then the call came in.

No cop would stop on the way to a B&E to pull someone over - hopefully.

If he as all of your info already he can just deliver or mail the ticket. Thats how we deal with our parking tickets, so I dont see why it wouldn't work for a speeding ticket.

Well, not being knowledgable on Canadian laws - I would say that the Canadian officer knows more about their laws than anyone here, so I'd venture a guess that yes, he can do that.

And maybe you'll get off & he'll never show up today.

EDIT - wonder what would happen if no one were home today.

I know like with school buses in the US, if you pass them when they have their stupid little stop sign out because kids are crossing, if they find your car within 24 hours they can ticket you.

Because with a speeding ticket, you actually have to be 'served' the ticket... ie the officer will have to physically hand you the ticket (that's why they get you to sign it on the spot usually)...

If they simply send you the ticket in the mail, you can say you never received it and not pay...

this car was coming up behind me really fast so I got into the left lane

Are you serious? That's pretty stupid..

Left = passing... if the car is coming up fast, you don't go into the left lane.. THEY do...

I'm pretty sure he's just trying to scare you because he didn't have the time to deal with you. He probably went back and looked up your record first.

Good catch. You can cause accidents doing that.

Not sure how the canucks do things, but here they can indeed let you go, then go to your house or blace of business and issue the ticket. NOTHING says they have to issue the ticket on the spot...They often issue tickets days or weeks after an accident, so doing this is not out of the question. IIRC, the only requirement is that the officer actually witnesses the violation. In MOST jurisdictions, they can't issue a ticket on someone else's word...
