seriously germany have motorways with no limits yet people still choose to drive at around 70-80mph.
if u have driven or have been driven at fast speeds ull see why.....i was a passenger in a car doing almost 160, and i was sh!t scared....an thats on a track
160 on a motor way would be suicide, on a track u have space and time, and if it goes pear shaped u end up in a wall or gravel, on motorway ull be dead along with other people,
high speeds are just too intense for normal people, less ur michael schumacher.
germans have a very high standard of driving, and like i said the majority actually choose to keep it real at 70-80mph

go drive at around 180 and ull see why its not exactly desirable to go everywhere fast
speed limits are a very good idea, and should be kept. dont get me wrong i love cars and i love speed but, i know when to be sensible. its all very much safer to make sure people stick around the 70-80 speed
They also pay extremely high amounts of money to get/renew the license. Oh, and not all of it is a 'no speed limit' zone, most areas that receive high traffic have variable speed limits that change depending on traffic.

I think 75 is reasonable.. Everyone would do 80 and they could actually enforce the law... instead of pulling over guys who like to do 75 when the s/l is 60... Its ridiculous. I like driving into MI after 5 minutes of Ohio's 60 BS to jump straight to 70-75
The only reason we bitch and moan about speed limits is that it's enforced arbitrarily. If it was enforced like it was a really important law, we'd all be cruising along at the right speeds, because we'd fear getting a ticket. Instead, cops will sometimes pull you over for going over the speed limit, other times, they blow by you while you go 80 mph.

I know I'm comfortable doing 80-95 in normal conditions on I80 through Nebraska. I made the trip that way a number of times. Now I mostly stick to right around the speed limit or 5 over because of the kids in the car. It's a good highway to go fast on; pretty much just a flat, straight run.
I think it's pretty much ok but I'd say 60mph instead of 55mph for urban areas. 70-75 on the rural interstates.
*BUT* one change I'd make is the *minimum* speed must be no less than 10mph under the posted speed limit (unless there's bad weather) and that minimum speed should be enforced diligently. IMO, someone going more than 10mph under the limit is at least as dangerous if not moreso than someone going 10mph over the limit.

It depends on the region.
bi-directional highways, 60 is fair enough. maybe 65. (current limit 60)
Divided highways, like the ones here - 50mi. straight stretches, flat, little traffic, really,... I don't think 100mph is too crazy unreasonable, but it should go back down to 60 if passing through a town or approaching important intersection, etc. (current limit 65)
Also adverse weather conditions, incompetent drivers - people should realize just because limit is 100MPH they can still slow the fvck down.

They should update the signs to be digital and change according to traffic conditions. If it's sunny and clear and light traffic, 100MPH seems like a nice option. Sunny and clear and heavy traffic (but not bumper to bumper) 55-75MPH depending, etc.
Rainy / Overcast / Nighttime adjust etc.
Maybe they could sell transponder boxes that allow you to override speedlimits with what's in the car. Then they could track how fast you are going for the privilege of you sometimes being allowed to go faster, but, if you break the rules you get a ticket automagically... I'd entertain having that as an option if the 'faster' limits were reasonable.

From what I have seen here in the NYC metro area during periods of good weather traffic flows at:
75 - 85 on the left lane of interstates and parkways
55 - 65 on 2 and 4 lane state highways
Interstates 75. 65 is just too damn slow somtimes when the road is straight and wide.
But how many people here are talking about regular, two-lane each way, narrow highways through towns and such? That's what most of the highways are like around here. The speed limits vary from 45-55 on them. On some it's even 40. But I agree with them, because the speed limit is that low only where the road is narrow and there is no shoulder or any extra space on either side of the road. The median's right against the left lane and the metal barrier is right against the right lane. So in such a case I think 45 is justified.
And teenagers who think it's their right to drive in the left lane need to be....eliminated.
