"Speed limit enforced by aircraft" - what exactly does this mean?

I always see this sign on the turnpike but I never knew what it meant.
Maybe they got choppers with lasers trained on the ground, and if they catch a speeder, they call to a rolling unit on the ground?

The plane crashes down on top of you, so you can't speed anymore. ie enforcement.
😉

They could have an aircraft over head to watch for speeders, then radio to a ground unit.

One way the A/C can get your speed is to time you over a distance, they can use lines across the road and know that it takes, x seconds between lines. If your below x seconds, your speeding.

Sometimes you'll see a helicopter/plane fly over the freeway, and then a half-mile later there will be a line of cops pulling people over.

There are markers painted on the highway. A small plane can clock your speed by timing how long it takes you to move marker to marker. If you're speeding they can take a picture of your license plate and ticket you by mail.

Usually those signs are located in long, flat stretches of road. Planes will fly directly overhead, following the road path, and will take measurements of all the vehicles traveling on the road. (not sure on the exact tech used, probably differs from plane to plane) When they find someone speeding they radio to ground units to pull them over.

It's damn obvious when they do it apparantly. I mean huge plane flying low and sorta slow. C'mon.

Cliffs notes:
If there's a law enforcement aircraft flying overhead and they notice you speeding, they can nail you for it.

I believe these signs are required to by posted (in a roundabout way) by the Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution, since visual speed measurements are not legal/kosher in every state.

Yup.

Those white lines you see on the highway are timing markers for helicopters and planes. They calculate how fast you went a 1/4 of a mile and extrapolate how fast you are going from it.

My friends and I got busted once that way. We had a radar detector but it never went off. It was a huge speed trap with about a dozen police cars. When we asked the cop how he knew we were speeding he pointed up. There was a Buick GN, Mazda MX6 Turbo and a bunch of other weird cop cars pulling people over. This was in Connecticut btw.

Connecticut has tons of different unmarked State Police vehicles. They've gone from 5 Liter Mustangs to Grand Nationals to Mazda's to Camaros to SUVs and everything in between. The big ticketing campaigns in Connecticut at the moment are contruction zones and seatbelts. They're really cracking down lately, some road crews have Staties sitting in their orange trucks with radar/laser guns and chase units a quarter mile up the road. People come up on a work zone, see no cops and zoom through, they get tagged by the guy in the D.O.T. truck and bingo, they're toast. Double fine. And in the last week I've gone through at least 5 or 6 seatbelt checks. The cops pull off on the entrance ramps to the highway and just stand in the middle of the lane. As cars turn onto the ramp the cops look into the cars to see if the front-seaters are wearing seatbelts, if not they pull them over right there. I've yet to go by one of the checkpoints that didn't have at least 2 cars pulled over. The one I hit today in Stratford had 4 cars stopped getting tickets.

The last ticket I got was about 5 years ago and it was from a plane.
It is not "damn obvious".
It is a small plane and it doesn't fly that low. Since it is high in the air and behind you, you can't see it unless you stick your head out the window and look up and back.

They mean "We're trying to sacre you into slowing down".

I've never once seen a plane over a stretch of highway with one of those signs.

How much they use planes probably varies by location.
But my $75 speeding ticket from 5 years ago is proof that they use them sometimes.
Plus I've seen planes on multiple other occasions when driving I-5 in Oregon.

Why the Fvck would anyone drive a vehicle and NOT wear a seatbelt? Dumbest thing ever...
