Spanish 'Star-Spangled Banner' Draws Ire

We have 'O Canada' in French & English and I had to know both in school. Who really gives a crap?

You should all be happy that the immigrants are so proud to be in the US, they are actually interested in the US national anthem and not just singing the one from their home country. They are only translating it, not changing the words into something offensive. Roseanne Barr did much worse IMO.

Are sporting events FORCED to play the star spangled banner in English now? I thought they did it willingly.

Does it matter? They are either being forced by the Gov't or the league's offices. In any regard, I can imagine the first lawsuit regarding a team only playing the English version of the Star Spangled Banner. What do you think led to all hospitals (public or private) printing information in english and spanish?

But, I can change it, if you like: Can't wait until all schools are forced to play the Star Spangled Banner and the Spanish version.

Canada's situation is much different than the US. Some people would argue that Quebec is an occupied country. Occupied by english speaking folks who don't want to let it secede.

the star spangled banner should be the very tool we use to teach them english. if i have to use spanish to tell you not to mow over my rose garden again, you have to learn to sing our nation's anthem like a parrot, echo echo.

One of the founding principles of our country and society is freedom of speech. If this offends you, I suggest you get over it.

Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom from criticism.

Completely agreed. I don't really like what these people are doing, but I think it is still their right to do so. I just wanted to post it before the "they shouldn't be allowed to do that" crowd arrives.

I shouldn't have to learn multiple languages to order a meal or do anything else for that matter. Goto Russia or China or France and order a meal in English and see the response you get from that country. If I'm trying to move my life to those countries, I learn their languages, their customs and try and fit it, not have the country modify everything to accomodate my being there.

Complain to McDonald's for hiring them and putting them on the register. You're right, it is absurd for someone who doesn't speak English to be put in a position like that. But speaking English isn't a necessity to survive in the United States, especially since many immigrants live in insular communities where everyone speaks the foreign language (latinos are not the only ones, Asians do too).

Hospitals are essential services, sporting events are not and the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of the game sure as hell isn't something worth suing over. We don't play the Canadian national anthem in French when Canadian teams play in the US, I highly doubt there'll ever come a time when we play the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish before every baseball game.

Yeah, but there are some in the Mexican immigration movement that would like to see a seperate nation carved out of the US Southwest. Check out groups like Aztlan, Mecha, La Raza, and more.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the U.S. does not have an official language. Also, English, is guess what, used in England (as well as elsewhere), it is not really our language (even if we did adopt it heavily). There is no American language.

So, all you people griping that you should speak English if you live in the US need to realize that fact.

If we had an official language, that was wholly ours, then, maybe I could see your problem, but we don't. America was built by many people who spoke different languages. The Native Americans, Africans, Europeans, Asians, and so forth.

I don't want to learn Spanish anymore than anyone else, but I don't see why people are so up in arms about them translating the National Anthem into the language.

Why can't they just work on improving the country they've got first?

Hey, all I'm saying is that it wouldn't surprise me if someone sued. And I fail to see how something "essential" mitigates the use of English only.

Please, many countries have English and Spanish as their official language even though it's not "their" language. With that logic, even England couldn't claim english because it is a derivative of many older languages, like Latin, Hebrew, etc. The fact is, we have used a language in this country since it's founding. It has changed over the years, with it's own dialects and slangs, but it's still English. I can go to any part of this country and understand what an person is saying, if spoken in English.

What I don't understand are you people who wish America had no sovereign culture.
English is a part of that culture. I shouldn't be forced to pay for, listen, read, learn any other language for the sake of not offending someone else's culture.

We live in a large, diverse country with no official language. Many of our citizens are more fluent in Spanish than in English. Why risk the health of a person because we don't like the language they speak? 😕

then we must start printing everything in every possible language known to man. Maybe, that's the extreme, but if you risk the health of one person because we do not use his/her language then we have failed, correct?

And it's not that I don't like the language they speak. If you are to become a citizen of this country, you MUST know how to speak English. It's a part of the citizenship test. If you don't speak English, then it's obvious you are not a citizen. Why are we funding printing, schooling, etc. in a language for people who are not citizens?

While I understand the intent, I don't like it because it is divisive. We're a melting pot of many cultures under one ideal. Not many under many.

1. There are ways to become a citizen that do not require taking a citizenship test (in fact I became a citizen of the United States and never took such a test).
2. There are people who are here legally but are not yet citizens.
3. We treat all people equally here, regardless of citizenship.

I think militant separatists are quite different from people wanting to enjoy their adopted nations anthem in their native language.

You are right, I don't give a crap, it is just a song. If lyrics are changed to encourage division or promote anti-nationalist sentiments, then I would care, but until then it is just the same song sung in a different language.

YOU DO NOT HAVE AN *OFFICIAL* NATIONAL LANGUAGE in the U.S.
No mention of one in any of your legal documents.

That makes you an "open territory".

Tough luck.

Read the first sentence again if you can't figure things out.

I'm waiting for the Chinese and Ebonics translations.

I mean NO LEGAL PROVISION EXPRESSLY AND CLEARLY STATING that English is the official national language of the Unites States.

As long as there's no such provision, you can (theoretically) have legally binding documents - even the DMCA revision, other laws or amendments to the Constitution - written in Chinese. Can't read it or speak it? Tough luck.

You are probably the only country in the world with no official language expressly laid down in its constitution. You probably have to re-write that document and vote on it, just like any other civilised country in the West.

Even if it's not legally the official language, come down to the USA and you will find that we speak English.
