Roland wrote meaningful lyrics without being pretentious like Sting. BTW, I can't believe Everybody Love A Happy Ending is ten years old.

Definitely Depressed Mode. Saw them in '88 (maybe '89) in Portland for Music of the Masses (OMD opened for them...another candidate for this poll IMHO) and then a couple of years later for Violator.

"Somebody" was "our song" for me and *several* ex-girlfriends. :sneaky:

Songs From the Big Chair was a great album, as was Duran Duran, Rio (Save a Prayer is in my top 3 songs of all time), and Seven and the Ragged Tiger, but I think Depeche Mode takes the cake on overall scope and longevity.

Man, I'm sorry I missed out on the whole Depeche Mode thing. I'll have to look up some of their songs. I like the vast majority of that list and a really hard choice. It really is a toss up between Duran Duran and Culture Club for me (voted Duran Duran). Bon Jovi on the rock side.

They're still alive and touring. They've got some years left in them yet.

Any particular songs I should check out?

There are so many songs I would consider to be excellent. I would start with the first album and work your way up as you have time to listen to it. The best way to get to know the band would be hearing them as they were initially and then as they evolved.

Was gonna be pissed that Depeche mode was on the same list as the rest of these talentless ass clowns until I saw Metallica on there too.... WTF? Who puts Metallica on any list with Culture Club?

Duran Duran all the way. They sold over 100 million copies worldwide. They had early hits like Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, and Union of the Snake. They came back strong in the early 1990's with Ordinary World and Come Undone. Spandu Ballet were decent, but they didn't find the same success as Duran Duran. They had one hit "True."

The reason people dislike Duran Duran is because they consider the band to be pretty boys. True, they mostly had women fans, but they were also musically talented. They also started trends in fashion, and their music videos were amazing.

*btw, if you're going to include metal bands you need to include Poison.

I was at that Violator show in Portland. Overall their most solid album, IMO. They certainly went in a different direction after that (but still good). Saw them in Seattle in the mid 2000's. Their new stuff was good, but they still played a lot from Violator. Haven't picked up their new album yet.
