I had to think about it, but I think Depeche Mode has had a bigger impact on music as a whole so I'm going with them over Metallica.

I have to go with Depeche Mode on this... Even though Duran Duran came out with something amazing in the 90s with Come Undone.

I saw Depeche Mode here last fall. They are still incredible and can perform as well as ever.

I would say this list is missing some of the other significant bands that emerged from around the same general time and made a huge mark like DM has. Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Talking Heads etc.

Yeah Depeche Mode was definitely a band that was far beyond it's time and continued to evolve as it aged without feeling forced. Certainly a band that broke any conventional modes of genre or eras.

Another one I'd like to toss in there is The Cult.

Depress Mode :sneaky:

The Cure was also good at dark depressing music.

From the thread title, easily Duran Duran. Not sure why you started throwing in metal/rock bands in the last three.

The playlist of misery. If the only music I could listen to was the polled bands, I'd quit listening to music. Maybe an hour or two per year.

I voted for Tears just because Roland Orzabal had the best head of hair a man could ever have in the 80's. I was sooo jelly ! They had some beautiful melody written into their music and I could chill out listening to a lot of their albums.

Loved Duran Duran, especially 'Girls on Film', one of the first videos to get yanked for content from MTV (back when they, like .. played music videos !

Was a toss up between Duran Duran, & Depeche Mode, but I'd probably have gone with the Cure, or REM instead (love me some 80s REM). Also Joy Division/New Order probably at least belongs on that list.

And though I love those bands, I don't mind some GnR either.

Depeche Mode is a much more polarizing group that appealed to a few groups of people. Either you loved them, or hated them. As I was listening to Iron Maiden, Dio, Rush, and the Scorpions, my sister would put that on the record player and I'd yell, "get that no talent crap off there! Where's the guitars!" Of course now I can appreciate them.
Therefore, I'd have to go with Duran Duran, a little more mainstream that appealed to a larger group. A little bit of rock edge in them.
Agree with The Cure needs to be on here....
