Maybe there is hope afterall against Spam:

3-10-2004 Internet Providers Sue Hundreds for Spam

WASHINGTON - Some of the nation's largest Internet providers, in an unusual joint effort, said Wednesday they filed six lawsuits against hundreds of people who were accused of sending millions of unwanted e-mails in violation of the new U.S. law against "spam."

The legal actions by Microsoft Corp., America Online Inc., Earthlink Inc. and Yahoo! Inc., represent the first major industry actions under the "can spam" legislation that went into effect Jan. 1. The lawsuits, filed in federal courts in California, Georgia, Virginia and Washington state.

The companies said the defendants include some of the nation's most notorious large-scale spammers.

The "can spam" legislation requires unsolicited e-mails to include a mechanism so recipients could indicate they did not want future mass mailings.

Problem is that may of the Remove mechanisms are broken and/or ignored.

Why does it take 3-10 business days to remove you from a list? :(

I was going to put this in the "No Sh1t Sherlock" Thread:

3-18-2004 Spam Driving Internet Users Away From E-mail

A new federal anti-spam law has done little to decrease the amount of junk e-mail flooding Americans' in-boxes, according to a survey released today that found the mounting spam problem has prompted nearly 30 percent of respondents to reduce their use of e-mail.

"I think we do agree that faith and confidence in e-mail is in danger of disintegrating before our very eyes."

"People are really abandoning e-mail," said Laura Atkins, president of the SpamCon Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to eliminating spam and other problems that inhibit e-mail communication.

I know many Companies and people no longer using E-mail and have gone back to FAX.

How lovely, we are going backwards.
