The Palestinian Authority announced on Thursday that Spain has decided to recognize a Palestinian state along the 1967 lines before September. A spanish diplomat told Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath that Spain would support making the state ofPalestine a UN member.

A Huevo!! and a UN member to boot. several South American countries have already backed up a free, independent Palestine and now European countries are finally waking up. two states. separated by 100 mile high walls would be nice

yeah, maybe 1967 isnt such a great idea then. why not cut it down the middle symmetrically? that way, each side will have access to the sea
Perhaps I'm cruel, but I think that the US should nuke the entire area from orbit and let the people start all over again with out the religious bickering.

Hah that made me giggle. Gotta have some beach front, dammit.

Even Tony Blair didn't have a good answer why 1967 borders shouldn't be something that UN votes on when pressed by NPR.

almost 100 countries are ready to recognize it as a state. :\

Elevating them to the same status of The Knights of Malta (who do not control Malta), are they?

The Palestinians do not control the 1967 borders, nor are they able to take it back by force. They cannot win it back via diplomacy (even if the leadership wanted to) because too many of their own people are itching for a fight and the Israelis are happy to oblige. They will not become a member of the U.N. because Obama will have it vetoed at The Security Council.

There is no way to end this, unless they are assimilated into Israel (like many already are), they relocate to surrounding countries (that do not want any more refugees) or they convince the surrounding countries to attack Israel again and eliminate it.

The best option appears to be assimilation, their standard of living will skyrocket and in a few generations they will have enough votes to remake Israel into whatever they wish it to be.

If the Jews can declare independent why can't the Arab/Palestinian?

They can declare independence. When the Israelis declared their independence, they were attacked from every direction by the surrounding Arab countries. Israel defeated those countries. Palestine is already occupied (for the most part), so the independence declaration will be just words, unless they attack Israel's military and convince the surrounding Arab countries to intervene again.

I say Spain should return to the 790 AD borders. They illegally stole their land from the Muslims and should give it back.

If you cut it for equal area, then the southern country gets fucked, because of the Negev. If you discount the Negev, then somebody ends up with a ton more area. You also end up with squabbles over better farming land, better defensive land, land that the the Israelis have vastly improved or just slightly improved, and above all, religious centers - chiefly Jerusalem.

Not with out the support from the US/Truman. IMHO, Israel didn't get UN or the US recognition in good faith then and now, and would be a nobody with out the US.

Recognition of the State of Israel

Previous American presidents, although encouraged by active support from members of the American and world Jewish communities, as well as domestic civic groups, labor unions, political parties, supported the Jewish homeland concept, alluded to in Britain's 1917 Balfour Declaration, they officially continued to "acquiesce". Throughout the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, the Departments of War and State recognized the possibility of a Soviet-Arab connection and the potential Arab restriction on Oil supplies to the US, and advised against U.S. intervention on behalf of the Jews.[12] With continuing conflict in the area and worsening humanitarian conditions among Holocaust survivors in Europe, on 29 November 1947 and with US support, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 181, the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, which was to create Jewish and Arab states and take effect upon British withdrawal. The decision was heavily lobbied by Zionist supporters, which Truman himself later noted,[13] and rejected by the Arabs.

As the end of the mandate approached, the decision to recognize the Jewish state remained contentious, with significant disagreement between President Truman, his domestic and campaign adviser, Clark Clifford, and both the State Department and Defense Department. Truman, while sympathetic to the Zionist cause, was most concerned about relieving the plight of the displaced persons; Secretary of State George Marshall feared U.S. backing of a Jewish state would harm relations with the Muslim world, limit access to Middle Eastern oil, and destabilize the region. On May 12, 1948, Truman met in the Oval Office with Secretary of State Marshall, Under Secretary of State Robert A. Lovett, Counsel to the President Clark Clifford and several others to discuss the Palestine situation. Clifford argued in favor of recognizing the new Jewish state in accordance with the partition resolution. Marshall opposed Clifford's arguments, contending they were based on domestic political considerations in the election year. Marshall said that if Truman followed Clifford's advice and recognized the Jewish state, then he would vote against Truman in the election. Truman did not clearly state his views in the meeting.[14] Two days later, on May 14, 1948, the United States, under Truman, became the first country to extend de facto recognition to the State of Israel, 11 minutes after it unilaterally declared itself independent. With this unexpected decision, US representative to the United Nations Warren Austin, whose team had been working on an alternative trusteeship proposal, shortly thereafter left his office at the UN and went home. Secretary of State Marshall sent a State Department official to the United Nations to prevent the entire United States delegation from resigning.[14] De jure recognition came on January 31, 1949.

Edward Jacobson

Because Jewish leaders in the U.S. knew Jacobson was a friend of the President, they approached him to lobby Truman with even more fervor. Jacobson went to the White House on March 13, 1948, and at that meeting persuaded Truman to meet with the leader of the Zionist movement, Dr. Chaim Weizmann. Partly as a result of Jacobson's efforts, the United States became the first nation to grant diplomatic recognition to the new state of Israel on May 14, 1948.

My dear Mrs. Roosevelt:

I read your telegram with regard to the Jews with a lot of interest. This situation is a most embarrassing one all the way around and has been most difficult to approach. I hope it will work out.

I understand that these ships were loaded and started to Palestine with American funds and American backing-they were loaded knowing that they were trying to do an illegal act.

The action of some United States Zionists will eventually prejudice everyone against what they are trying to get done. I fear very much that the Jews are like all underdogs-when they get on top they are just as intolerant and cruel as people were to them when they were underneath. I regret this situation very much because my sympathy has always been on their side.

Sincerely yours,

Jewish History, Jewish Religion:

The Weight of Three Thousand Years

by Professor Israel Shahak

John F. Kennedy, told me how, in 1948, Harry S. Truman had been pretty much abandoned by everyone when he came to run for president. Then an American Zionist brought him two million dollars in cash, in a suitcase, aboard his whistle-stop campaign train. 'That's why our recognition of Israel was rushed through so fast.' As neither Jack nor I was an antisemite (unlike his father and my grandfather) we took this to be just another funny story about Truman and the serene corruption of American politics...

Can some one clarify this, because I never heard/read this before.

Because no one else cares about a bunch of terrorists.

Also, because we have seen these stories for years. Post one when the title changes from "will recognize" to "did recognize"

If the Jews can declare independent why can't the Arab/Palestinian?

Because they lack the muscle to make it happen. Just look at how badly the Palestinians have been losing ever since 1947. Every year they lose more and more of their land. What a bunch of pussies!

Because no one in the Western world gives a shit about the Palestinian people. I'd rather they all be wiped out instantly than have to hear about them on the news or on this forum.

Israel and the Zionist are setting themselves up for another war. And, please don't play the Holocaust card the next time, because it is not going to work and many people are not going to support Israel if Jews have your attitude.

The US is slowly losing it power and in fluent world wide, and eventually it will not have enough money or patient to support Israel.

China: 'Pakistan is our Israel' -- The world's most populous country is showing more international assertiveness, which bothers the US.

When a US delegate once confronted a Chinese diplomat about Beijing's uncompromising support for Pakistan, the Chinese reportedly responded with a heavily-loaded sarcastic remark: "Pakistan is our Israel".

But judging by China's unrelenting support for some of its allies, including North Korea, Burma, Zimbabwe and Sudan, its protective arm around these countries is no different from the US and Western political embrace of Israel - right or wrong.

While China is battling the West over exchange rates, import tariffs and its territorial claims in the South China Sea, Beijing is also lobbying furiously to stall a Western- inspired proposal for a Commission of Inquiry on possible war crimes by the military junta in Burma (Myanmar).

"Such a commission should not be seen as a way to punish the government, but to prevent impunity and help prevent further abuse," says the UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar, Tomas Ojea Quintana.

But China, which in January 2007 exercised its veto, along with Russia, to prevent Security Council sanctions against Burma, has not shown any willingness to back the proposal - even for a watered-down commission.

"Clearly," says one Asian diplomat, "China is trying to reassert its political clout at the United Nations as a counterweight to its defensive stand on currency and trade issues."

At the rate we've gone for the past 60 years, the Palestinians will either have no land left or they'll all be dead by then.

Are Zionists becoming worst than the Nazi that once hunted and killed Jews?

The Nazi only want to exterminate Jews, and the Zionists want to exterminate and steal the Arab/Palestinian land.

What do you think happened to the land and assets of the Jews the Nazis exterminated? Hint, it was seized by non-Jews.

would be a nobody with out the US.
Would the Palestinians have stood a chance in their assaults on Israel without the aid (and encouragement) of surrounding Arab countries? Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the Arab countries committed significantly more firepower, manpower and resources to eliminate Israel than the US provided Israel during those wars.

On a side note, why do you champion the cause of independence for Palestine, yet consider the (mostly black) South Sudanese "dead weight" and undeserving of independence from (largely Arab) Sudan? Countless South Sudanese died during their rebellion and recently they voted to leave Sudan after paying for their liberty in blood.

If the government of Palestine follows the trends of surrounding governments, I highly doubt that it will not have massive corruption as well.
