Your ignorance is astounding in multiple ways.

First, by stating that "what we get" from the ISS is a guy playing a guitar. There is a lot of research happening on the station. It isn't just people playing music.

Second, assuming that government money went towards making this music video. He most likely made it in his off time. Government employees are allowed to have off time, right?

Third, if you were really concerned about "useless wastes of money", you'd stop posting, cancel your Internet, and donate the money saved towards a charity. But you don't really care that much, do you?

The Canadian astronaut has become the first rock star in space, posting an astonishing video of himself playing guitar and singing in zero gravity aboard the International Space Station. The song, appropriately, is David Bowie’s Space Oddity, with music recorded on earth and vocals recorded in space. As the astronaut bobs weightlessly around singing “here I am, sitting in a tin can far above the world”, we see our big, beautiful planet looming behind him. The video would have cost a small fortune to shoot in a studio but presumably just took the singing spaceman a couple of spare hours with a handicam.

It doesn't sound like it was a big costly project. I have no issue with them having a little fun when you're up there for days, weeks, maybe even months at a time. Besides, I nef at work all the time.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for space exploration, science, riding around in pressurized cans of air above the atmosphere...but WTF? if you've got the balls to ride up into space...sing the damn song yourself.

I'm a huge critic of manned space flight. If you look at the most important research that they're doing (linked to above), one major experiment is the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer & the search for figuring out what the heck is dark matter. There's no specific reason for that experiment to be aboard the ISS, except to give them something to do. Except for research on the human body, there's very little, if any, research that requires an ISS to perform. It was mentioned that SpaceX makes it easier to retrieve science experiments. Well then, send an unmanned version of SpaceX up, perform experiments robotically, then bring it back. Again, no need for the middle man. Though, I'll admit that there are some areas of research that might be promising - bone density & possible solutions which might be applicable to persons aging on Earth.

Regardless though - this coming from a critic of manned space flight - your opinion is idiotic. That video was awesome, and if it inspires even one kid to pay more attention in science, it was worth it.

One of the specific reasons AMS was designed to be on-board the ISS was the power requirements. It runs 2-3KW. Add in another KW or two to be a free flyer and you'd need to add something like the billion dollar Juno probe with 10+KW arrays to carry the already over budget AMS-2.

The ISS already had the power, attitude control, and comm systems to support such a payload.
