Southerners - what are your opinions?

Floridian wandering in to confirm that Florida does NOT qualify as the South. You want real Southern culture and hospitality, check out Louisiana or Georgia. All you'll find in Florida are completely mindfuck ignorant rednecks, retirees, transplants (born in MA, 2nd gen immigrant) such as myself, and maybe a few "real" Southerners.

It's the accent. You can be the brightest person south of the Mason-Dixon, but the accent makes you sound mildly retarded. Just like a Brit who's dumb as a box of rocks will sound halfway bright due to that accent. No rhyme or reason to it, that's just how it is.

there is a reason we southerners keep are kooky traditions and "hatred" for all things non southern. because we dont want you here. we would like your money and the occasional visit from time to time. but keep your liberal freedom hating asses up north and out west. that is all 🙂

The Northerners just need to realize one thing. They are moving down here because we have an economy and we have an economy because there are not as many liberals as up north. Wherever the liberals have controlled the local governments for decades you can see just how screwed up the local economies are....so don't move here and then try and change it to the shit hole you evacuated after you slowly destroyed it with your politics.

My parents have found this to be the case. They lived in PA and owned a mobile home in NC for many years which was used for vacations. Eventually they bought a house and moved to NC. Once they lived there full-time, they quickly noticed how many northerners moved there permanently then immediately started to complain about how things were done. The transplants wanted more roads, more shopping, more services. My parents were quite content with the status quo - otherwise they wouldn't have moved there.

Well, Texas hasn't seen an influx of northerners like the southeastern states. The biggest influx has been hispanics (they now make up more than 50% of the city I live in). So I guess I don't share other southerners' concerns (unfounded or not) about northerners coming in and spoiling our economy.

Anyways, my biggest gripe with living in Texas is that I don't share the majority's conservative social and religious views. But, honestly, for all their righteous indignation, they have never kept me from living the kind of life that I want to live.

The people in the south can handle hot weather really well.
Me, if it gets more than like 72 or 73, I start sweating. They are perfectly comfortable even when it's scorching hot in the 80s and humid!

They can't handle cold weather at all though.
I am comfortable with shorts, a tshirt, and sandals into the 50s, and usually, I wear shorts in the 30s and 30s too. Also, when it's in the 20s outside, I wear shorts.
I've seen people from the south who put on a jacket when it's nice and warm, like 60.

I was born in the south (Baton Rouge) and spent 23 years of my life there. I recently moved to northern New Jersey about 15 mins away from NYC.

I can honestly say I've never met more un-rightfully arrogant, rude, selfish, self-glorified, scum sucking filthbagery, douche-head, cock munching, liberal trash spewing, pig headed, snot licking, poor excuse for human beings than up here.

I love it when I take a week off and head back down to be with family, and what seems more like a civilized society than anything I've seen in my 5 years in this hell-hole of a state/region of the US of A.

I grew up in a suburb of Nashville (read: bubble) that was about 70% northern implants. I don't have an accent, and I don't have much southern cultural experience, except for making fun of the few rednecks and country music fanatics that lived in surrounding towns. It was a massive culture shock to me when I moved 180 miles east to Knoxville.

Fixed for obvious error.

I'm living in Central Alabama (completely not by choice(Air Force)). It's like they took all the worst stereotypes of southerners and dumped them into one city. I lived on either the western or eastern central coast of Florida for 14 years before that, but really except northwestern Florida it's more like the north than the south.

I firmly believe that everyone within a 10 mile radius of where I live (Carrollton, TX near Plano/Dallas) is a complete moron. I feel like a God when I am in Walmart because I use the self-checkout line which seems to always be open when there are 1000's of people waiting to use the regular check-out line. And I am thin and work out, which is more than I can say for 85% of the people in my area.

We had a Taco Bell/KFC open up just recently by my neighborhood and it was packed beyond belief. I couldn't understand how it took more than 60 seconds how people can't understand that a drink comes *gasp* with your meal when it clearly says it on the menu. And I don't mean to offend anyone but it was full of Mexicans which by itself is not a problem (I'm half hispanic so whatever) but wow some of them are just plain stupid, if not borderline retarded.

EDIT: I am also liberal democrat (one of the few in the area) but I don't consider myself a southerner although the furthest north I've ever lived was Dallas, TX 😱 :disgust:

Teh South is a godawful area to live. So if you value your sanity, STAY WHERE YOU ARE. Do NOT move to the South.

Both please.

I don't mind "yankees" at all. My mom and grandparents are from Salem, OH and dad is from Albany, GA.

There is a MASSIVE influx of northeners as of late. While I don't mind it, I do mind the fact that a vast majority bitch and complain about the weather or the people.
They moan bitch and complain and never consider the fact THEY moved here and can move back.
The want all of these changes done but when it happened for them originally, they complained and left. Now it's happening all over again here now.

Now, if we're talking "redneck" and all of that...go to Florida. There are some seriously scary places there that give me the creeps and I have lived in the south most of my life.

There are rednecks everywhere you go, regardless of what state you live in.
Some may have the accent or Magnolia mouth or none at all. Every always ask if I am from the west. I guess it's who you hang around or listen to a lot.

I have lived in the dirty south (MS) for my entire life. This state is has it's fair share of the southern stereotypes, but not so much in the larger cities. The rural areas are a different story.

It is cheap to live here, relatively low crime, and I haven't ever had a problem finding a job in the tech industry.

When I was younger I dreamed of moving to Colorado and my sister acutally did. When I visited her I realized that it wasn't the place for me. People automatically assumed I was racist and grew up on a farm. So they were stereotyping people they thought stereotyped other races... ironic. There was also a sense of superiority of being a Colorado native... I heard the word native a lot out there the several times I visited. It's a beautiful place, but I like to be close to the beach and beautiful women. I don't know if it's the lack of humidity there, but the south definately has it's fair share of good looking women.

The south definately has it's share of problems. The MS delta region is extremely poor with widespread poverty. There is still a lot of racial tension and some areas are even having problems with reverse discrimination practices in goverment. Lookup Noxubee county MS election problems.

See? Perfect example 😉

I could say the same thing, it could go on and on and on. It's like pointing a video camera at a mirror 🙂

I've liked Texas and Alabama every time I've gone to visit - was down in Tuscaloosa about a month ago to see the Iron Bowl. Maybe I've been lucky.

if Knoxville was a shock then don't go any further south or your head may explode.

I would prefer to live in the South over anywhere else in the US. From what I've seen it fits my lifestyle the best.

And for the record, Texas is not Southern.

Not so much Knoxville proper, but Vonore, Lenoir City, Loudon, Madisonville, etc. Those were a shock...especially Vonore and Lenoir City. My SO is from Japan, and its amazing to see the amount of prejudice around here compared to back in Nashville.
