I grew up in a suburb of Nashville (read: bubble) that was about 70% northern implants. I don't have an accent, and I don't have much southern cultural experience, except for making fun of the few rednecks and country music fanatics that lived in surrounding towns. It was a massive culture shock to me when I moved 180 miles east to Knoxville.

if Knoxville was a shock then don't go any further south or your head may explode.

I would prefer to live in the South over anywhere else in the US. From what I've seen it fits my lifestyle the best.

And for the record, Texas is not Southern.

Not so much Knoxville proper, but Vonore, Lenoir City, Loudon, Madisonville, etc. Those were a shock...especially Vonore and Lenoir City. My SO is from Japan, and its amazing to see the amount of prejudice around here compared to back in Nashville.

I grew up in Knoxville and I concur. There is something to be desired in all of those surrounding cities. I'm living back in Murfreesboro now and I love Middle Tennessee so much more than East Tennessee. I hated West Tennessee. I live in Memphis for three years during law school and I'll never go back to that place. Tennessee really is three states in one.

I'm developing an opinion that Northerners are overly opinionated and have an undeserved sense of superiority.

Fixed for obvious error.

See? Perfect example 😉

I could say the same thing, it could go on and on and on. It's like pointing a video camera at a mirror 🙂

I'm neither a Northerner nor a Southerner, but the Southerners definitely come off worse in this thread (IMO).

Ah Lenoir City... my old high school stomping grounds. 😛 At least I got out of there able to read/write/spell/and do numbers! Errrr...

Anyway, I live in Murfreesboro, TN now (just outside of Nashville) and it is completely different. Idiots are everywhere I don't care if you're in the North, South, center of the earth, etc. You bring your prejudice with you when you move/visit here and judge us before even arriving. Much like how I judge rude Yankees before heading north or freakish liberals with pink mohawks highlighted with little flowers before heading to Cali. 🙂

I can honestly say I've never met more un-rightfully arrogant, rude, selfish, self-glorified, scum sucking filthbagery, douche-head, cock munching, liberal trash spewing, pig headed, snot licking, poor excuse for human beings than up here.

I love it when I take a week off and head back down to be with family, and what seems more like a civilized society than anything I've seen in my 5 years in this hell-hole of a state/region of the US of A.

😕

Is this your way of saying you're gettin' some? 😛

NJ sucks. From CT here, now living in NY. Came here for college, stayed because of a good relationship and job I didn't want to leave.

But the simple fact is, you cannot beat New england no matter where you go. I've been just about everywhere-- Mexico, several countries in South America, about 20 of the states in the US, Canada, the Caribbean, and Asia. New England beats all, no question.

I'm living in Central Alabama (completely not by choice(Air Force)). It's like they took all the worst stereotypes of southerners and dumped them into one city. I lived on either the western or eastern central coast of Florida for 14 years before that, but really except northwestern Florida it's more like the north than the south.

Montgomery? That place is a shithole. I don't even like going through it on the interstate.

I am from the South, and I am proud of it. I know the difference between good BBQ and and crap, and I know what Tex-Mex is and what REAL Mexican food is.
Basically, I am really hungry right now. 🙂

I believe that people in general are similar everywhere. The minor differences are cosmetic. One region may differ due to education and social upbringing but in the end, people want to do the best for themselves and their families.

Blah, sorry for this extremely unorganized post.

The idea that every one is similar is patently false. Different backgrounds, customs and, histories are NOT cosmetic and change the very way people think. The goals may be similar but, people don't live, work and play with goals.

The process is what is important to all people. That process is what varies vastly between locales within an individual country let alone the world. In short, people are NOT basically the same everywhere. Viva la Difference!

I still, and will forever, hold that you can't be from Loudon county and read or write...I call shens.

not even half the states? i bet most of them are those little bitty ones in new england too. new england area is nice, i wouldn't say it beats all, though. i like parts of maine, new hampshire, and vermont. pretty area. if you guys had mountains up there it would be better.

This is only really an issue in urban centers. Here, the northerners will come for work, family, etc, but I would not say there is any disdain towards them as "outsiders". They are a vital part of our economy, and if they enjoy our way of life, then I have no problem with anyone coming and joining me in the South. Just remember, you're in my home, and to please respect our views and lifestyle.

which part though? the mudsliding, santa ana winds, fire ravaged southern part, or the rest?

Hey now you guys are reinforcing negative stereotypes about us Californians. It's fine when folks post stuff reinforcing negative stereotypes about Southerners, but stop it with the CA stuff. Just relax and bask in our ultra-superiority. 😛

I live in the Raleigh area. I like the combination of northerners and southerners living here. Our economy is better than most places at the moment.

nah I've been to Washington (the state, and the capital actually), Florida, Indiana, Georgia, West Virginia, North Carolina, etc I could go on obviously but just pointing out a few to show they aren't all New England, not by a long shot... Ive spent time in every major region of the US so I have a grasp of the different lifestyles, climates, attitudes and such

I moved to Atlanta about 6 months ago after living in NE Ohio for 15 years and SW Ohio for another 15. A couple things that really stand out is the casual racism that takes place. Atlanta itself doesn't show it, but once you are out in the surrounding counties, you start to see it and feel it. I do like the weather more and the food is great. I also found that I like the personality of the women more down here. I can't see myself wanting to date another northerner again.
