Not sure if/how often SK fires back but NK has shot artillery a million times before, this is probably nothing.

Not really as a armed conflict in the Korean Peninsula would further tank the World economy which would hurt China economically.

About as much as you want to see a guy who owes you a million dollars and buys your stuff all the time suffer a massive robbery. Clueless. Tell us more your understanding of the Chinese desires?

What you don't hear about the conflict every day: while North Korea is led by 'evil dictators' shut off from the world, they have a couple very good reasons for doing what they do.

During the armistice, the nation of peace, the US, put nuclear weapons into South Korea - and so naturally North Korea wanted a counter.

In the 90's, North Korea suffered a major natural disaster that destroyed most of their crops, and led to the massive food shortage their economy - already terrible, no world trade - still is destitute from.

Taiwan and a White House that China knows will not step in. Even more so if the U.S. is involved in Korea.

The NKorean regime is kinda like the Righties on this forum- attention whores, always stirring the pot so they won't be ignored. They also need to invoke xenophobia, foster the public perception of external threat to maintain domestic control. Sound familiar? It should...

In an actual conflict, no outside interference, they'd be stomped flat by their SKorean cousins, who have one of the world's most advanced and potent militaries with the industrial base to back it up. That truth is obvious to the North. So the NKorean regime stops short of war. Destruction and loss of life on both sides would be huge, which is why the SKoreans don't initiate such conflict...

Really? Is this why they have an extensive gulag system to torture their own people? Give me one good reason for that.

I guess all the data about trade with China increasing from a few hundred million in 1995 to $1.6 billion in 2003 is bogus. And what about the negligible coal exports to China in 1995 that now are probably above 3 million tons a year? I bet that nice Kim Jong Il provides those people pulling all that coal from the ground excellent pay and benefits.

NK has much bigger army with nukes at disposal. Missiles and Arti fire would wipe Seoul off the map in 10 minutes time. In a all out slug fest without foreign power involvement NK would probably win as Guerrilla warfare would be involved in these type of wars not who has more technological advances.

NK has nothing to lose and everything to gain. I don't know what the hell is wrong with SK generals. I suppose LMB is at play here. He should step down already and only take care of treasury dept for SK.

NK and SK are on the eve of major diplomatic talks. There have been a number of minor incidents like this in the past week or so, I view them as saber rattling.

My daughter is in Seoul so I'm attuned to news about Korea. And Craig234, I think you are off base in your analysis-going back as far back as the start of the Korean War (when NK without warning or provocation did a massive invasion of the South in violation of diplomatic reunification agreements) NK has consistently and always been the aggressor.

Standard scaremongering and ignorant conjecture. N Korea has antiquated weaponry and lacks the capability to produce or buy more. They also lack the food and fuel resources to fight a modern conflict. Their airforce is a joke. While they have demonstrated a nuclear capability, that doesn't mean they have a device they can deliver other than by truck.

What they do have is decent military intelligence, which indicates that they don't want to start anything stupid. Otherwise, they would have.

Not in Craig234's world, where evil dictators who slaughter millions are just misunderstood, but any republican who votes against certain legislation is a traitor that deserves being sent to the gulag.
