here is the thing with statistics, total homicides in St Louis in 2020 was 267, total for NYC in 2020 was 1,531. which one had more killings? NYC, which one had the higher rate per 100,000 people? St Louis did. subjective on which one is safer. do you go by the per 100,000 rate or total number?
The number of murders in NYC in 2020 was about 1/3rd your quoted amount. (There were 468 murders in NYC in 2020)

Aside from what appears to be an error in the number of NYC murders in 2020, I'm a bit surprised that anyone needs to ask the question you posed. If one country has 300 million people and 2 murders, and another country has 5 people and 1 murder, which is safer? If the one murderer kills again, and you are a citizen, what are your chances of being the victim, versus whatever your chances would be if you are 1 in 300 million people facing two murderers?

There's a reason why per capita statistics are the only ones ever used for measuring population level phenomenon. Only politicians and people who do not understand statistics would suggest otherwise.

what makes the SE and MW states so prone to gun violence?
Gun worship, poor education, and lack of opportunity. There are other reasons as well of course, but I see those as likely top three.
nope, did not fail statistics in college, actually got quite a high grade. You can make statistics support or go against any thing you want.
Not if you're being honest, you can't. It has nothing to do with your bullshit statistics educational history that you misrepresent. Your appeal to authority is laughable. I mean...you can't even use honest, legitimate numbers in your claims!

I'm visualizing Herschel Walker on a debate stage, claiming he's a statistics 'expert'.

You are doing nothing but creating FUD, and everyone else here recognizes it.

But yet the 'liberal' media has everyone thinking NYC is the dangerous spot.
Maybe because black people are killing each other? Clicking the link to the report, it says 70% of the murderers are black.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A murder in the neighborhood can significantly knock down a child’s score on an IQ test, even if the child did not directly witness the killing or know the victim, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
The findings have implications both for crime control efforts and for the heavy reliance on standardized tests, said New York University sociology professor Patrick Sharkey, who conducted the study.
They can also explain about half the achievement gap between blacks and whites on such tests, he reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

[...]

The effects wear off after a week to nine days, Sharkey found. But in areas with a lot of crime, this does not provide much relief.

“When one takes into account the prevalence of homicide in the most violent neighborhoods in cities like Chicago, these results mean that some children spend about one week out of every month functioning at a low level as they navigate the home or school environment,” he said in a statement.

In general, black U.S. children score about one standard deviation lower on standardized tests than white children. This finding accounts for half that difference, Sharkey said.

Jesus fucking Christ. You were supposed to ask your 8th grade math teacher this question.

I think every socioeconomic outcome is worse in red states vs blue states. I can't think of one area where red states are doing better. Education, violent crime, gdp output, most health care outcomes, environmental controls, etc. Someone please show me a list of something positive in society that red states are ahead of the curve in.

Texas has more crypto farms and has power generation problems. It's better for the other states.

Someone please show me a list of something positive in *corporate* society that red states are ahead of the curve in.
Lower taxes. As you already said, lower environmental regulation. Shittier labor laws.

I know of none that are valuable to or good for the general public.
