He added, "By the way, I should say if anyone wants to tape my conversations, go right ahead, feel free to do it. I appreciate anybody who wants to tape me openly."

Last 9 Illinois Governors:
William G. Stratton 1953-1961 (Republican) Indicted for tax evasion related to his use of campaign funds. (Acquitted).
Otto Kerner, Jr. 1961- 1968 (Democratic) Convicted on 17 counts of bribery, conspiracy, perjury, and related charges when Marge Lindheimer Everett deducts the bribe from her federal income tax return as a "ordinary business expense." Sentenced to three years.
Samuel H. Shapiro 1968-1969 (Democratic)
Richard Buell Ogilvie 1969-1973 (Republican)
Daniel Walker 1973-1977 (Democratic) Convicted in 1987 for obtaining fraudulent loans used to support his business and his yacht "The Governor's Lady." Sentenced to seven years, served 18 months.
James R. Thompson 1977-1991 (Republican)
James Edgar 1991-1999 (Republican)
George H. Ryan 1999-2003 (Republican) Convicted on several counts of misuse of campaign funds (funneled to his many daughters, housekeeper, etc.) and selling business licenses for cash and political favors while he was Secretary of State. Sentenced to six and a half years. (Appealing... still).
Rod R. Blagojevich 2003-Present (Democratic) Indicted for bribery, etc. related to shaking down businesses (Tribune, etc.) for state assistance.
Oh that's an awesome quote!

Edgar and Thompson were good govs. Ryan will die in jail hopefully, but Blago has taken it to a whole new level.

The IL legislature is calling a special session to repeal the law that gives the governor authority to designate a replacement and that would trigger a special election for the seat.

They need to be working day and night on this puppy. Time is ticking.

Seriously...the thought of this asshole getting to appoint someone to the seat is pretty bad. Honestly at this point I'd be OK even if a Republican ends up getting the seat as a result. A free election result, even if I don't like it, is ALWAYS better than the result of a corrupt process.

Is it true that Obama came out and said "This is not the Gov Blagojevich that I knew?"

BTW this might not hurt Obama now, but it could dog him in the same way womanizing dogged Clinton.
Obama must be praying for a quick plea deal to get this out of the public eye. Last thing he needs is a long drawn trial that exposes everything dirty thing that takes place in IL and Chicago politics.

Yah bring on a public trial with senate committees asking lots of questions. Bring Blagoyo-ditch in front of congress and ask him lots of questions. He needs to be forced to tell everything he knows.

The morning radio is pretty much as expected .... all the other politicians getting as much airtime as possible to cover their ass and denounce Blago and his practices (even though most are / were doing exactly the same thing at some level).

There are some notable exceptions, like nearly all of the Chicago politicians (including Da Mayor), and nearly all of the Cook County Board (including Da Toad). I expect they are busy shredding (Cook County's electric usage spiked for most of the day yesterday from all the shredders running).

He'd crapped all over the other state officers for years (Attorney Gen/Treasurer/Comptroller/etc) and blamed them for tons of stuff. They are more than happy to even up the score some.

Blago stepped over the line even for Chicago corruption/graft. Who the fuck in their right mind even discusses selling Obama's seat when you've got a workaholic US Attorney who has already sent one governor to prison hovering over your every move?

Bahahahahaha Candidate #5 is Jesse Jackson

Guess he'll be doing that $500k fundraiser from PMITA Federal Prision

12-20-2008 ABC: Jackson is 'Candidate 5'

ABC News has a law enforcement source telling them that Jesse Jackson, Jr. is "Senate Candidate Five," the one who was -- according to Blagojevich -- willing to supply campaign cash in exchange for the Senate seat.

Jackson Jr. said he agreed to talk with federal investigators "as quickly as possible" after he consults with a lawyer.

JJ2 is a regular guest on WLS (Tuesday mornings, I think) and always comes across as a pretty reasonable, normal person (aside from the fact I disagree with most of his views). He can give & take conversation/discussion/arguments passionately without going over the edge (like his old man).

If JJ2 did it, then he deserves Bad Things. I'd be sad to see it; even though he's a Dem, at least he seems like a reasonable & realistic Dem.

Personally, I'd prefer a conservative but in the reality of the circumstances, I'd settle for a Dem ala JJ2.

Now defying calls for resignation I am not terribly surprised. I wondered at his initial gall if he even thought himself wrong; I think he displays classic symptoms of dictatorial contempt for those around him and see his office and others as tools directly to support him and his ambitions. In his heart I would question whether he even believes he has done wrong by his own standards. When Governor Spitzer apologized for whoring I got the distinct impression he truly regretted doing it. This guy, I think his regret will be getting caught.

Unfortunately, Blago only verbalized (and was captured) doing "Business as Usual" politics in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. The majority of political people in this neighborhood work, operate, act, and think just like Blago. There is nothing unusual about his attitude, behavior, or expectations.

It's taken a hundred years or more to get the corruption this fine-tuned, busting a couple pols here & there isn't going to get rid of it, they just find ways to drive it deeper (and counter techniques on their part have improved significantly, thanks to a number of "security experts" brought on staff).

Toad Stroeger (Idiot and President of the Cook County Board), just after his election, declared one elevator in the office building as his; it was roped off. It was his private chamber and that's where he got his marching orders from the Machine. Then someone figured out that a designated elevator makes it easier for the Feds to bug & listen to him, so they decided it "just wasn't right" to take over one of the elevators ... now they randomly change elevators for every ride.

With the possible exception of Louisiana / New Orleans folks, people outside of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois are scandalized by these operational concepts .... around here it's the SOP. You don't have to take my word for it, try reading John Kass from the Trib (http://www.chicagotribune.com/...dec11,0,301469.column) for example, or any of the political writers from the Chicago area .

Is it? Seems like Illinois has a strong history of corruption, and it seems to be mostly the Dems which have taken a part in it. How do we know Obama didn't get his Senate seat by the same method? Is anyone able to hold public office in Illinois without being corrupted in some way? Will Obama bring Illinois politics to Washington?

I guess the Republicans like their sex scandals, but the Dems seem to like the pay to play model. Anyone got some cash in a freezer I can borrow?

You try asking Ted Stevens?

How do we know Obama didn't get appointed to his senate seat by a corrupt governor? Probably because he won it in an election. All you are is a troll, you can't actually believe the stupid shit you write.

Oh come on, the left always says elections are rigged by Diebold, Bush, etc. I'm sure payments could be used to influence poll workers. Seems to be the way things get done in Illinois. I guess you can call me a troll but history seems to show that Illinois politics is extremely corrupt and the Democrats seem to be complacent in it.

I imagine you mean 'complicit' not 'complacent'. As for Obama's election, he beat Keyes by 43 points. That's an awful lot of unnecessary vote rigging to beat one of the most pathetic and crazy senate candidates in a generation.

I think your problem is that you don't know when to stop. Had you just stuck with "damn Democrats in Illinois are corrupt!" you'd be on pretty solid ground, and you could indulge in all the partisan hackery that you wanted to from that relatively safe position. Instead you got too excited and tried to tie Obama into this... which was stupid.

Believe it or not I don't think you'll find many liberals defending this guy. His blatant corruption and abuse of his position is both insulting and infuriating. If this is SOP in Chicago then they need a major house cleaning. Same goes for anywhere else regardless of (R) or (D) next to their name.

I doubt we will see many defend him as well.. but I think its fair to ask, just as the left did when there were a few Republican scandals, of how deep this goes, and does it reflect on the party as a whole? I don't believe there is any way Obama could not have known about whats going on in Illinois.. what we may find out is that he helped in getting the Gov caught.. but would he have done that if he had not become President? And how long did he know it was going on?

Believe me I am not living in any fantasy world where I think Obama is not going to be President.. But we need to dig into this.. This is a lot more serious than if some representative was having sex with a page.

Yeah, he's openly denounced his father's political statements in the past. But who knows, the apple doesn't always fall far from the tree.
