So have you ever eaten a whole bowl of cereal, only to realize after that the milk was sour?

Did this last night. Poured myself a nice bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and chowed down. About an hour later my stomach was hurtin and then I had a case of haftapoonow and dashed to the bathroom to evacuate. I was sitting there trying to think what the hell I ate that was causing it and then I thought of the milk. Popped the top and gave it a sniff and yup it was bad.

Can't believe I didn't even taste it. Damn you Cinnamon Toast Crunch for your awesome, sour milk hiding flavor.

I've never not realized milk was bad. Love the location you have listed btw.

About two days ago, I also ate some Cinnamon Toast Crunch with some questionable milk.

I ate it just fine, and then came home after work to see my gf dumping the milk and putting in a new gallon. She said the milk was 6 days past the expiration date.

There will probably be comments below saying "6 days is nothing...", but normally I quit trying to chance it a couple days after the expiration date.

Facepalm. Thats a SELL BY DATE not a drink/eat by date.

Yep. As long as the smell doesn't turn your nostrils inside out, it's good to go. Have this argument with my wife all the time on "sell by dates". The food doesn't magically go bad on that date. It's like a "serving suggestion".

If it passes the sniff test, it's good to eat.

Milk can smell bad and still be fine to drink. Unless it's getting chunky it's still good to go, IMO.

Sometimes it's just some sour milk around the cap area that makes the milk smell bad when it's actually fine.

+1

I think a lot of times, you'll smell the crusty stuff that gets stuck near the cap.

I have, however, taken a huge swig of curdled, chunky milk twice in my lifetime. Absolutely disgusting. Makes me sick to think about it. Ughhhghhghh...

Almond milk doesn't spoil eh?

Yeah, I usually sniff and give it a taste test if it smells funky by swishing it in my mouth. This stuff wasn't chunky yet but it was definitely turning or turned bad.

i've done that.

came home late, poured a big cup of milk, drank it w/ some cookies or toast, thought it tasted funny, but continued to drink, about a quart.

i asked my dad the next morning about it and he said it was spoiled and they were taking it back.

didn't make me sick though.

I've ingested questionable milk with my cereal before, but if it's flat-out spoiled, I notice it right away usually before eating it.

The worst was when I poured buttermilk in my cereal by mistake. I immediately noticed it when pouring, but there was no way to salvage the bowl of cereal, so down the disposal it went :(

The wifey is slightly lactose intolerant so she drinks Lactaid milk. I'm the only one that drinks regular in our house. If I'm not in the mood for cereal, occasionally the tail end of a half gallon jug goes bad on me.

It's just funny because I can usually taste it when the milk is borderline. Even with cereal usually. This time, it all tasted fine. I had no clue until the assplosion.

I always take a wiff before I pour.
Same here.

It's along the lines of another disaster prevention practice: Always ensure that there is toilet paper available before it might become a significant problem.

Facepalm. Thats a SELL BY DATE not a drink/eat by date.

It usually starts to smell off a couple days after that date, so I usually smell it at that point and decide.

I didn't smell it that day, so I don't know if it was still good. I use the date as a guide and let my nose tell me if it's still good or not. I didn't check a couple days ago, and based on my prior experiences, I thought 6 days was probably past the point where it would have failed my sniff test.

switch to almond milk.

I've been wanting to try almond milk for a while now. Can you give a description of the taste?

My brother's girlfriend tried some vanilla soymilk the other day and she said it was like watered down melted ice cream. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I don't want that.

I once threw out a gallon of milk that was 8 months old. It had turned into a solid chunk of yellow. I'm pretty sure if I had opened the container and exposed it to oxygen it would have came to life and tried to eat me.

That reminds me of a time mom was cleaning my sisters room, and found a half glass of "milk". The glass hadn't been seen in over 2 years. D:D:
