Just about 5 minutes ago I chopped up the rest of the Ham from Thanksgiving and stuck a big bone with ham in there and leftover ham fat in a Crock Pot with Great Northern Beans.

Soup beans and ham with corn bread is one of my favorite things. Going to let those cook a nice long time on low.

damn dude. Invite me over.

Me too! I'll bring the beer! :)

Pffft. A thick stew with vegetables and meat and served in a bread bowl is more than plenty for a main course.
Not saying it can't be filling. It certainly can be plenty for a meal. Typically though a main course is reserved for s specific protein preparation - fish filet, poultry, or a cut of pork or beef - where that protein is the star of the dish.

The main course of a meal is simply the most substantial dish. That could be the stew. Your definition applies just fine to a Lamb Stew, for example.

Shepherds pie is just a dense stew. That works fine as an exclusive meal.

Sure, it could be. Personally I've have never had a multi-course meal that featured a stew as the main course. Have you?

Mmmm, a hearty homemade stew with garlic bread and your choice of an adult beverage is a meal fit for a king.

especially in the cold of winter.

Sure. There's an English pub/restaurant near me which serves a sheepherder's stew as a main course. Starts with a salad.

And in the cold of winter, a thick hearty soup can be almost a meal. A nice French Onion loaded with crusty bread and melted cheese, yum.

Stew is soup. Stew has no distinguishing characteristics other than it tends to be thicker than soup. Unless you're in the service where thick is considered a flavor, there is no difference.

Maybe it's my traditional idea of what a multi-course meal is comprised of, but to my way of thinking you basically had a soup & salad.

Tonight we dealt with the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers. I simmered the turkey carcass for a couple of hours to make the broth for a turkey noodle soup with vegetables. If the broth had been thickened I could have called it turkey stew with veggies. I also did a hot-pressed ham & cheese sandwich. It was hearty. It was filling. It was good. But it was also just soup and a sandwich.

There was no main course...and there's nothing wrong with that at all.
