Since the original post states that movies are not a factor and a 2.1 setup would meet his needs, a vintage setup would easily meet his requirements. Regardless, most affordable computer specific setups only accept analog anyway, since most machines these days are more than capable enough to decode DD/DTS streams. DRM issues could also potentially limit what can be routed digitally at some point, which would leave digital inputs useless. As far as gaming is concerned, unless your game natively supports DD/DTS or your board can do real-time encoding to DD/DTS, you will need analog outputs to take advantage of EAX or other surround sound gaming protocal. Besides all the technical talk, he wants something different from his buddy's, a vintage system would definitely be a converstation piece!

for other speaker choices look at the thread at the top of the audio/video section. yoyoyo has a really great thread there you should read. also check out infinity's primus line and there monitor line. i have a set of primus 150's and the sound really nice with both my turntable and my digital out from my computer. they pair well with a Yamaha, the infinity's are a little bright sounding but the yamaha is a warmer sounding amp.
