That Yamaha receiver has no S-video inputs, no HDMI inputs and spring clamps (insert ::ick:: smiley here)

yamaha receivers sound real nice. i have a rx-v640 and have listened to a bunch of others. you should keep an open mind about all of this stuff. its important to listen to them to see what you like. I was on a smaller budget and am running infinity primus 150's. you should look at the higher infinity line of speakers also. almost anything you put together this way will sound better than made for computer speaker sets. to save money you could use a sonic T-amp or just get a stereo receiver to run your speakers. the T-amp has very little coloration to the sound but you are limited in your inputs. also check out the swan powered computer set if you are looking for something for music.

Besides X-LS (and the b-stock ones especially if you can live with minor imperfections)
No 30 day trial on b-stock though FYI

A couple of the big ID Sub companies are putting out basic bookshelf speakers to compliment their sub lines

Axiom and Ascend start at a higher pricepoint

Aperion Audio is another company (in addition to AV123 on bookshelf speakers) that does risk-free shipping both ways trials

Are you in to building stuff at all?
There are kits out there that you can build or you can go DIY.

I dunno... those are some of the options for you :p

Axiom does risk free in home trial as well.

"Since we've included shipping in our costs, we only ask that you pay the return freight."

Axiom has you pay return shipping.

Sounded the same as AV123's to me...or am I reading this wrong:

ALL products sold through AV123 carry a no-questions-asked 30-day in-home satisfaction guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase within 30 days of the original shipping date, you may return it for a full refund less the shipping costs to and from AV123.com. To receive full credit, merchandise MUST be returned in its original cartons, with all original contents and packaging, and be in like-new condition. If original packaging is not available, please call an AV123 representative for assistance.

Doesn't that mean you will not be refunded the shipping cost to you and you have to pay to ship it back?

AV123 covers return shipping on bookshelf speakers

X-LS:
Order a pair of x-ls speakers and spend a month with them in your own home. If after 30 days you don?t love them, we will pay the shipping charges back to us, credit your original form of payment for the speakers AND the outbound shipping!

RS250:
Order a pair of RS250MkII speakers and spend a month with them in your own home. If after 30 days you don?t love them, we will pay the shipping charges back to us, credit your original form of payment for the speakers AND the outbound shipping!

Ref 1:
Order a pair of Reference 1 speakers and spend a month with them in your own home. If after 30 days you don?t love them, we will pay the shipping charges back to us, credit your original form of payment for the speakers AND the outbound shipping!

(etc.)

With all these ID companies, generally worst case is that you're out shipping costs both ways. On a pair of bookshelf speakers, that's probably not too bad.

Some are free both ways if you don't like them while others just have you pay shipping one way (Like Axiom does in effect by including shipping in the original price that they would refund you).

While still a good deal. I would still favor the Onkyo for the HDMI, S-video, More digital connections, 7.1, etc.

I think its important if you are going w/ a receiver and speaker setup to make sure the receiver is able to grow as your system does.

ok so i think my best option right now is the HTR-6040. a set of those r-6 speakers ( i have a buddy with them and they sound awesome) and then the dayton sub. what do you think.

i am going to bet that those speakers are not all that awesome. they may be, but i bet you could do better with the av123 bookshelves. the specs on those r-6's sound a bit out of range. i highly doubt they will produce down to 35 hz. I think you should look elsewhere.

I am going out of the box here with a receiver recommendation: vintage late 70s Pioneer
receiver SX-#80 series. I used a SX-680 for several years with great results. These receivers
pack plenty of power and can drive cheaper inefficient speakers better than many modern
receivers. The SX-680 is only "rated" at 30watts RMS, but remember many manufacturer
conservatively rated their receivers in the 70s, so it sounds much stronger than just a mere
30 watts. Anyway here are some pics:

Pic 1 (The SX-780 in the pics at rated 45 watts RMS)
Pic 2

These are not compact, but they are not as big as they look.

One more suggestion is an old quad receiver if you want at least 4 channel audio (2x front, 2x rear).
Many of the old quad receivers have a discrete 4 channel input labeled CD-4 which will allow
L-R front and L-R rear.

Marantz 4270

vintage is great. but you do not get any digital inputs. in todays world, if you want to use it for movies at all you should get a newer reciver with digital inputs. i love my old marantz but its just not practical to use it for my main system.

in all honesty, for the size of the room and the fact that it is a dorm, i would look on craigslist for a set of the klipsch 2.1s like the guy down the hall has. i am sure you can get a set for ~$75 or less. when you move into a apartment in a few years, the receivers will be different in the input/output/upscaling dept and you may as well buy then for what you want/need, not try to buy now for something you may use in a few years.

plus, if you have this nice setup you won't be targeted by people to come in and jack your stuff :D, the 2.1s are just "computer" speakers, not nice, ht speakers (event though the 2.1s do sound good, especially for the price)

just another opinion....
