SO's Car is totalled, looking to get an SUV this time

Sadly, the GF got t-boned by someone in her Yaris and it's totaled...We bought it new in 08, with 0 miles, now it's got 4000 some, and is totaled 🙁.

She is fine though, just a little sore. We want to get a SUV this time, specifically thinking 04-06 Trail Blazers or Jeep Cherokee/Liberty? We do not want something huge like a suburban because she parks on the street at our condo.

things it needs is to be able to have a dog block dealio in the rear, so we can put our dogs in the trunk and not have them jump up front, that's huge! We take our dog everywhere...we'd also like V6, that can tow at least 1 ton...we got a boat we'll tow, and a few sleds next winter.

AWD/4WD options must be available too. Mileage is not a huge concern, as her work is 1-2 miles away...as you can see, over a year old, she only has 4k miles on her Yaris.

i have a friend who works at a chevy/pontiac/gmc/cadallac dealership, so we can get anything brand new at cost + a few hundred bucks through him....ro even a steal on something used.

Any inputs on the TrailBlazers/Jeeps is appreciated, or even something else we should look at. We are going to do a bunch of test driving after she feels comfortable driving again. (little shook up).

Let me add we are trying to stay around 10k-13k

EDIT :

only 4k on the Yaris...
pics of the yaris and the silly PT Cruiser

That is where they ended up...she was going left, she got spun around almost a full 180...yikes, she was at a dead stop too...air bags weren't deployed on either car.

but hey, at least there's one less PT Cruiser on the road ^_^

specs/cost? I forgot to add a budget 🙂

I hate Ford vehicle's , every Ford I have known, taures, explorer, F350, expedeition have had 1-2 transmissions replaced, so we won't be getting one of those 😀.

I have an 07 Jeep GC. Been rock solid. Very comfortable, very easy to drive. Everyone that rides in it is amazed it is a Jeep. I expect used prices continue to fall as demand is weak.

I rented one a couple years ago. Nice ride but not good on gas...then again, neither is a Trailblazer or Jeep.

If she wants a Trailblazer with more style & luxury - Saab 9-7X

Better warranty too.

cost? we are trying to keep it around 10k-13k 😉.

and, didn't they drop saab alltogether?

I just drove a rental Liberty and was underwhelmed by the interior material and overall ergonomics. I'm sure you'll notice if you test drive one.

In any case, I'm sure you'll be getting a great deal on a domestic nameplate SUV!

Get a Subaru Legacy or Outback. I'm not against SUV's like Jules...but the ones you've mentioned are absolutely the worst SUV's out there. I honestly can't think of worst ones at the moment. There is a reason they are bargain's on the used market.

If you must have a SUV over a Subaru, A ford exploerer is probably the best deal for the best SUV in that category. The next suggestion would be a little older Toyota Higlander (blah!...momma wagon without any of the fun of a Subaru) or 4Runner (actually quite nice...but likely expensive).

Just get a Subaru.

Those are basically wagons, so hell no! ...and ford explorers = never again in my book.

How are Trail Blazers and Jeeps THE WORST SUV? that makes no sense...From what I have read in the 2005-2006 era, they were great, maint. wise and whatnot.

Let me get this right...she was driving a Yaris...but a wagon is straight out...

straight out hell no! Yaris is much shorter then a wagon...and in her opinion wagon's are just butt ugly, and mine too!

There goes my Subaru Forester recommendation.

not sure how to put this nicely, around here only lesbians drive Subaru's .. outside of the STI/EVO/WRX area.

oh, and they are ugly.

I think the newer ones are decent looking .. I was just thinking about lower floor height in the back making it easier to get in/out for the dogs. And since it's car based, the ride will be better and won't use as much gas.

My dad has a Chrysler Aspen and the rear floor is so high with the spare underneath that my poor golden retriever couldn't jump in and was scared to jump out.

I guess I'm just getting practical in my old age. 😛

Yeah, we want an SUv for the height actually, much taller then wagons. Our dogs can jump 😛.

gas isn't a huge issue, something that gets 15 city, 20 highway would be fine...we'll go test drive some stuff this weekend, take it slow, get the best deal, the works...no rush.

I am still thinking the Trail Blazer and A jeep are on the top of our list, unless we absolutely hate them in person.

and honestly, have you seen the Yaris' interior? Trash imo, but the GF liked it.

How about the Chevy Equinex and the other ones(Pontiac, buick, saturn) built on it. It comes in a FWD/AWD setup. Better on gas then a trailblazer and a little easier to drive.

Also I am not a ford guy but the newwer smaller ford SUVs are pretty good now. I agree the older ones did have trans issues but the newwer ones I have not heard/seen that.

Trailblazer is also nice but eat more gas and is not as easy to drive. So have her test drive it first to make sure she likes it.

I like the Equinox, my aunt in law had one for awhile and I liked it when I rode in it. A friend of mine has one and loves it.

Not sure why you think wagons are ugly but the trailer blazer looks ok. But taste is subjective and I find virtually all modern vehicles hideous so I don't even consider it in my purchasing decisions.

Everyone rags on the subarus as a lesbo-mobile...because, well they are...but a good 50% of them have a dog cage in the back so they must have something going for them in that department.

I will make sure to check out the Equinex.

Like a easy car to a full size truck feel. The trailblazer is not that bad but it is still a RWD truck. The Equinex is based on a FWD setup so it drives more like a car. The trailblazer would be better for a board or major towing but the equinex would do fine for hauling dogs, trips to lowes, etc...

Could be the trailblazer is better but just have her test drive both first.

I rented Jeep GC Laredos a couple of times. They were 4X4 V6's. I liked them so much I bought a new GC Limited in October and I love it, too.
