My top pick in the compact SUV area would be the Dodge Nitro. Being a standard RWD vehicle makes it feel MUCH better than the FWD based Jeep Compass.
In the midsize SUV area I recommend the Chevy Equinox.
the equinox, is also a crappy vehicle, there are so many better choices...
like?

Okay, the Envoy/TB are POS... honestly... the interior is shitty, the body rolls like a 20' boat in the middle of a hurricane, the engine is obnoxiously noisey. the road noise is loud, i honestly would never, ever in my life want to own one. Not to mention they are horrendously unsafe... (and i sold them) in fact, the entire GMT360 platform other than the 9-7x i would avoid, all day, every day.
Take a look at used Tuscons and Santa Fe's as well..
If your buddy works at a GM dealer, tell him you want to browse GMsmartauction with him. there are thousands of vehicles on there, at different dealerships, he could tell you where, just promise to ME and HIM that if he tells you where, and you go look at it, you wont buy it from them...
???
I like the look of the Jeep Liberty, found an 07 with 20k miles on it for 12k...exactly what we were looking for, they were closed though so we couldn't test drive it.
It is actually called GMACsmartauction.
What it is is a private site, in which GMAC dealerships, and GMAC themselves list used cars which may be "old age" aka sitting on their lots to long, and lease returns for sale. You can find anything you want on it, and dealerships are typically asking a good low price on there to sell to another dealership to get it off of their books...
Now, this site will tell your buddy where they are located, so he can tell you where they are too, but as a salesman, it pains me so much to tell someone where they are... because, i dont care who, what when, how you are, buyers are liars... Seeing where it is, would allow you to go look at it before the dealership buys it, so you know exact condition it is in. Most of them have very detailed photos, the lease returns will have GM's wear square around any and everything that is wrong with them to give you an idea of what is wrong...
