The article should have specified which African country from which she emigrated. I doubt a news article would ever call someone a "European immigrant" or "Middle Eastern immigrant."

It doesnt really matter which country it was. This is not about racism, its about being offended by the flag of a country you freely choose to come to. It could have been a French woman who was offended and it would still be the same outcry of send her back to France then.

Thinking of Africa as one country, comparable to France, is racist. I'm not necessarily calling out any posters here, but the news article is racist.

Sometimes it's best to stop and think for a moment before immediately leaping to conclusion and calling people/articles etc "racists".

It may be that the woman who was interviewed (the article was quoting her) did not know or remember at that time which specific African country the other immigrated from. And the complainer did not want to speak with the reporter (who could have then clarified which country)

It may that the newspaper did want to specify the country out of respect for the 'complainer', to state the specific country would surely identify her and provide her with no plausible deniability.

It may be that the newspaper did not want to identify the country for fear of labeling all immigrants from there as 'USA flag haters' or just bitchy people, whatever.

It's equally likely the person was from an Arab Muslim country (as opposed to black Africa), they may not have wanted to 'go there'.

It's entirely likely that the editor felt the specific country of origin is of no import to the point of the article/story, thus no good reason for it's inclusion.

IMO, the least likely reason for omitting the specific was racism.

I smell BS.

In the original article it is said the person making the complaint was "offended"

Now they say the problem was the size, as if it was some inconvenience or distraction etc.

Unless the 1st article was flat-out incorrect, or a massively poor choice of words, "offended" does not translate into an objection about the size.

I agree, as it only seems to be CYA on the part of the company.

Fuck that. Freedom of Speech. She has every right to be offended if she wants.

Suggesting that someone has to leave the country for disagreeing with you is more prevalent in PN than Godwin's law.

freedom of speech is displaying the flag

being offended is NOT freedom of speech

if you really want to get down to brass tacks the crybaby stomped all over the free speech rights of the woman who put up the flag

No thanks. The klan has the freedom to walk down our streets and a bunch of people who are offended by it have the freedom to protest it.

I am free to say that I think everyone who stuck a flag bumper sticker on their car after 9/11 was offensive and a douchebag. I'm free to say that people who suggest others leave the country for not holding their view about sacred totem are douchebag. Dissent is speech.

The woman who posted the flag was fine.
The woman who complained was fine.
The company deciding to have the flag taken down was fine.
The company deciding to put the flag back up was fine.

I'll never understand patriotism. "I live in this country, thereby I love it." Can't it just tolerable and more convenient than many other countries?

What is wrong with loving/liking the country you were born/live in? I like the USA, but i think we have many flaws that need to be fixed. I do not love it blindly. And i have no problem taking examples of ways to do things better from other countries either. I think their are a lot of great countries out there and have no problem with people supporting their countries. If i were a full blooded Irishman living in Ireland i would be proud to be Irish. I am mostly just a mutt in the USA (melting pot), which kind of sucks having no real identity to latch onto.

Well, to be fair, if the they'd said "send her back to the Ivory Coast" many Americans would have assumed they meant Proctor and Gamble. ;)

Stifling a cry, McLucas said, "I just wonder if all those young men and women over there are really doing this for nothing."

I wish I was there to look at her right in the face and say "yes, they are there for nothing, but it has nothing with your stupid flag, you stupid twit."

Is this company a private or public business? Do they have a preexisting rule concerning personal displays in the workplace? There is a lot missing from this story... makes great fodder for the right wingers. Personally I think the supervisor needs to be talked to about how to handle situations like this, they did a horrible job and should be reprimanded for it. I fly a flag on my property everyday, I am am far from a right wing kook or lefty nut case. I think you sheeple need to step back and look at simple realities.
