Boom:
Only person to defend this bill in this thread so far is part of the rabid right.
I'm pretty sure Craig234 supports this.

See his various posts in the PC Gaming forum defending Ubisoft and EA's shitty bloated DRM tactics that restrict the "actual" legitimate users.

Also, see the debate about skipping commercials on TV. He equates that to theft.
If you skip commercials on TV, you're by his definition committing theft.

There is no doubt in my mind that although Patranus/Craig234 are on opposite extreme ends on the spectrum, they will agree on certain issues if you put them in a room together. If both were in congress today, it wouldn't surprise me to see both Patranus and Craig234 listed as co-sponsors for this bill.

I'll wait until Craig actually defends this bill before I assume he does.

Weren't you against the overreaching power of the government before? Or is that only if it doesn't benefit the corporations for some reason?

SOPA is not a bad idea in itself to protect copyright holders. However, this is NOT the way to do it. Why don't you do some more reading? SOPA is FAR to overreaching and needs some major amendments, which have all been shot down so far.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2011/12/16/how-sopa-could-ruin-my-life/

This just gives the government even more power to be abused and this is the wrong kind of power.

I don't disagree with the "idea" of SOPA, I strongly disagree with how SOPA works and how it can be abused.
About how I see it. Copyright protection needs to be strengthened, but this bill is way too radical, recognizing little concept of fair use and assuming that any use of copyrighted material should be accompanied by big profits. Big entertainment needs to have it hammered home that even though pirating is stealing, a teenager with 10,000 pirated songs does not represent $10,000 lost revenue, and never will no matter how draconian the laws. Personally I'd put strengthening of laws protecting artists ahead of strengthening of laws protecting record and movie corporations. There is absolutely no justification in allowing contracts that leave the artist with only a small fraction of the profit. And giving the government control over Internet content is a huge bad idea.

The role of the government is to protect the rights of the people. People have been willfully violating the rights of copyright holders with little to no repercussions. The law fixes that and is therefore not "overreaching power" by the government.

This law dont only benefit the "big bad" corporations, rather anyone who create originally work.

You call me a moron??? LMAO It was a Republican proposed bill...deal with it...

So your point is that the Republicans thought up the dumb shit and the Democrats are agreeing with and pushing said dumb shit?

Umm, yeah, your side definitely has the high ground on this one.

Why is it that the right talks all kinds of small government bullshit but never passes up a chance for more .gov intervention?

Not negating the Dems who are dipshits but it is hilarious to me that this Republican crafted Legislation none the less. 😉

There are always some Republicans who act like Democrats once they've experienced the allure of power. 😀

I'm not remotely like Spidey ,I don't whore off my old lady for a living and I definatly am not like you who is a sanctimonious motherfucker who sucks off the Gubermint tit. I have had the same Job for 30+ years with a huge pension built up from years of hard work something you are not familiar with.

You're exactly like him, only liberal. And the fact that you get so defensive about it merely proves you know it at some level. Just admit it and be a hack, or don't and be an insecure wannabe troll. Or change, but that option is naturally closed to people like you.

Either way, hope your dick feels bigger at the end of the day. That's about the only thing you'll get out of your style of posting.

I didn't know you swung that way....

Anywho you are entitled to your opinion but what it's worth is subject to debate.

Copyright holders have been violating the rights of the public since they extended it to life plus 70 years. I have zero respect for copyright law as long as copyright is, for all intents and purposes, eternal.

Why is it that you can use Patranus to characterize everyone on "the right" (for whatever that means) but we can't characterize everyone on "the left" based on an individual? A couple loonies in the Tea Party means the whole right wing is crazy, but a couple loonies in the Occupy group are just fringe elements that don't reflect on the whole? Of course it works in reverse too, bue either way it's such a pathetically obvious double standard.

Who here is actually all that worried about this bill?

I understand the implications and how far over-reaching it is.

I think it may even pass because it seems most the congress people don't even understand the 'technical' aspects of enforcement.

I foresee that if it passes, it will find it's doom when it comes time to enforcement. Almost any organization that provides content, besides hollywood, is standing up against this bill, and I can only imagine the resistance enforcement will face when it comes time.

1. Probably won't pass. If it does, most likely vetoed by Obama.
2. If it passes, general public will learn about it's harms first hand when it comes to enforce the bill and this is where it will fail. Repealed within 4 years.

It has a lot of co-sponsors, Harry Reid has made the Senate equivalent a high priority item, a lot of congresscritters have received donations from companies with a stake in SOPA passing, and it is expected that Obama will not veto it.

But like i said.. even if it does pass, enforcement will be a nightmare.

Who originally proposed the bill.... it sure as fuck wasn't a Democrat that is what I was referring to. The Democrats who jumped on board are as bright as the Republican legislators who originally crafted the Bill.

lmao so delusional

Good. Finally there will be tools for copyright holders to assert their rights so others cannot profit from their works.

I can promise you that this bill will affect everyone except the actual pirates.

A good analogy for you, since I assume you are stereotypically right on every issue - as most right wingers are. If we made guns illegal, who would be the only people who had guns?

Exactly. Look at what happened when PirateBay's gov tried to take them down. It was lolz. And they are still up.

Any 'legit' site is going to continue to deal with copyright infringing material the way they usually do. Remove the specific content.

Any underground site, like a private torrent tracker, is just going to play a cat and mouse game of moving IP's and changing urls to a degree it becomes a nightmare to make them stop.

All this will do is screw with legit businesses who are essentially innocent and undeserving of having their entire site blocked (possibly email to if the domain record is nulled). Anything underground is just going to shuffle around and be driven further underground, but not in a way that will stop anything.

Big Question.

Would this or would this not essentially give the .Gov the ability to block Youtube, entirely, because someone posted a copyrighted song without permission. If so, how would Youtube react to losing potentially millions of dollars in advertising revenue and going dark over a single user posting a video?

One could argue Youtube is the largest perpetrator of copyrighted material.
