Sanders too old to run in 2000, and he caved to the Clinton machine

Who's going to lead the Democrats?

My money is on a fiery progressive in the Sanders mold but about 20-30 years younger. Who exactly that is remains to be seen but they have four years to build up that image and the political opportunity is quite evident now.

I'm curious if GenX finally gets a nomination in 2020 or 2024. Obama was close. But a quality GenX could make some wide spread appeal.

They need to nominate an outsider with no political experience. Maybe another CEO. Trump vs Zuckerberg 2020, the showdown of a lifetime.

As a GenX'er, I'll be curious to see when we finally take over the majority in political power and what the landscape of politics looks like then.

Trump's win was super anemic and the popular vote is in doubt also. I don't think they need an outsider to win. A younger Sanders type progressive would probably do the job.

Oh please god not zuckerberg. Maybe a Bezos or Musk or Bill Gates.

Sandberg might be in play.

I bet Mark Cuban has an exploratory committee forming as we speak.

I was kinda joking but you have to consider that Obama ran on a sort of outsider platform too. Quickly changed once he got in office, but the young fresh senator with a "Change" campaign and great charisma was seen as among the most progressive/liberal candidates at the time. The main lesson from Obama, Trump, and Sanders is that brand is huge.

From what I've heard Musk has some political views that are actually closer to Trump's surprisingly, even on demographics/immigration.

Musk would be absolutely intriguing. Bezos is..meh. Gates would have no desire to do it. No on Cuban.

But Obama wasn't actually an outsider though I agree that perception is far more important than reality.

I don't think it's a stretch that a good candidate along the lines being discussed here could deliver something closer to an Obama 2008 like performance in the next cycle. Trump promised the moon to working class whites...failure to deliver and a lack of people to blame could have severe consequences.

Yeah, forgot he was South African actually. If Trump shits the bed, a billionaire candidate might be unattractive no matter who runs anyways.

Definitely, we just have to wait and see who that is. With the exception of maybe Warren (who I think will be too old and publicized this election cycle), I'm expecting a completely fresh batch of names for 2020. Well, maybe Kaine could try for Pres but he won't win, so forget him too. Since Obama was a junior senator, it could be someone that won't even be elected until 2018.

Currently, Warren is the only person that can fire up the base, imo. Other than her, Dems have to look for a newcomer that simply doesn't exist right now.

Looking at Pubs holding nearly all of the governorships, federal and state legislatures--absolute dominance of elected seats across the country for years now (what's that myth about a "liberal wave that has been dominating this country"? 😀), there really isn't an established Dem candidate that can consolidate anyone with the sort of energy of Obama, Sanders, or even Trump.

Kain ain't it, obviously.

What about John Stewart as a younger Bernie? He's like a cheekier, socialist leaning version of Trump.

As first order of business, I think they should not make Charles Schumer the Senate minority leader. Nothing personal against Chuck, but after Hillary's defeat from a populist revolt, it is not the time to have someone so close to Wall Street as a Democrat leader.
